Guest guest
in my personal opinion i would go to ER for blood in the stool!!! i know that is not the best place to be for lyme but there might be something just as serious going on. blood in the stool is never a good sign of anything. Guest guest
I have a 16 y/o dtr who periodically has had blood in her stools. It is bright red and is ON the stool and on her tissue when she wipes. She has been dx'd with eosinophilic gastroenteritis in 08. I always knew something was driving that dx, even though the GI clinic at the children's hospital does not see it that way. She has had to take meds to control symptoms. When I was dx'd with lyme, our MD wanted to see her, saying that all of his pt's that have had eos disorders test positive for lyme, and indeed, she did. I have had 2 pediatric GI docs, a pediatrician, and GI ARNP assert that her blood is probably from fissures which are caused by hard stools/constipation. When she was scoped in 08, they saw no lesions. Visual exams never revealed fissures, but they heal up very quickly so by the time I would get her in they probably healed. The GI clinic told me that if the blood persists, they would want to scope her again. When she has is periodically, if I question her, I will find out that indeed, she has been constipated, has at some time that week strained, and probably had a rectal tear/fissure. If she does not go for 1 day, she knows to take a dose of Miralax to soften the stool. 2 days of constipation will lead to abdominal pain and nausea. It is disconcerting, and I feel badly for her that at a time in her life in which she would REALLY rather to not be talking to her mom about bowel habits and poop, she has to. The GI clinic and myself have finally convinced her that yes, mom DOES need to know these things as it could be a sign of something more serious. But I do know that for her, it is not something to worry about unless it would become a persistent thing. Talking to the dr's and at least having them look at her was what gave me peace of mind. Bright red indicates the blood is from further down in the colon, closer to the rectum. Dark red (burgundy/blackish) is old blood, from higher up in the colon. Hope this helps. Guest guest
My son battled lyme for many years during his teen years. One of his biggest symptoms was blood in his stool. He was on oral abx for many years and he eventually we went to a lyme literate gastroenterologist who biopsied his colon and stomach and confirmed a positive lyme and mycoplasma infection via PCR (which actually finds the DNA). This positive PCR enabled him to be treated with IV antibiotics, (the insurance company agreed to cover the cost for 4 weeks, which we were able to get extended to 6 weeks. The bleeding stopped as his lyme and mycoplasma improved. I understand this is a more common symptoms in teens and younger children with lyme. Good luck. Guest guest
I am new to this group, but wanted to chime in - as an infant, my son began having blood in his stool - after months of testing, it was found to be a colyn polyp and it was removed. I think if the blood was accompanied by diarrhea and stomach pain, it would be more parasitic in nature too as we have seen that after travelling to another country, here in our house. It could be a small polyp, or from the constipation, or both. If it is alot, Iron may be low, my sons was very low so, something to think about. > > > > Our son (you know the 15 yo one I continue to post about), has had blood in his stool (not fissures) off and on over the last few days. > > Besides the chronic fatigue that has been pretty much 3 solid days now with an hour or 2 of him being up, he is experiencing low grade fever which includes low grade headaches in the afternoons with sweating, though his hands and feet are clammy and ice cold. Guest guest
Hi , There is a supplement by allergy research called Phloe. It is derived from kiwis so if you are kiwi sensitive this would not be a good choice. Phloe helps the GI tract with both constipation and diarrhea. It is an amazing product. I have been on it for awhile and have found it to be helpful. My son was on it for awhile for constipation and it worked just as well for him. It is a natural alternative to chemically based stool softeners. It is also gentle as opposed to some herbals that can actually irritate the GI tract. The company markets it for irritable bowel as well. You need to take it on an empty stomach for it to be effective. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I like this product for help with constipation. It's NOT a magnesium supplement and it's not habit forming. I started out using it everyday and now I only use it about once a week. http://www.iherb.com/Aerobic-Life-Mag-O7-180-Capsules/17762?at=0 Connie [ ] Re: Blood in stool concern Hi , There is a supplement by allergy research called Phloe. Guest guest
Forgive me if you already know this (I'm new to the list) but Doxy is hard on the GI tract. You might want to consider stopping or at least reducing the doxy since you are also using the Buhner protocol. The blood is probably from the Lyme but could be aggravated by the doxy? Unless the bleeding is continuous, extremely dark, I would think and ER would be a bit excessive since we know Lyme can do this and he will be seeing a LLMD soon? Keep a sharp eye on it though... That's what I would do anyway... Guest guest
I previously posted that my son did have blood in his stool, which was from the lyme. It was confirmed when his gastro biopsied portions of his stomach and colon and it tested positive for lyme and mycoplasma by PCR testing. The bleeding stopped after he received treatment from the lyme. Re: [ ] Blood in stool concern i have never heard so far that lyme can cause blood in the stools. Or maybe Borrelia causes rupture of small blood vessels, like Bart or Babs?
Guest guest
Before I was diagnosed w Lyme, Erhlichia, Babesia and Bart, I had severe GERD and colitis. Basically my entired GI tract was a disaster. I had a colonoscopy due to occult blood found in my stool (my father had colon cancer at a young age). Nothing was found. I started treatment for Bab which also treats Lyme and my colitis symptoms went away... can't remember how long that took. I DO know that my GERD did NOT go away until I treated for Bartonella for nine months with rifampin. I got relief after a few months but couldn't stop taking it without a recurrence until I tried again at 9 months. No GERD since then! I remember reading that Bart can be horrible to the GI tract but I'm sure Lyme can too. Guest guest
Connie and Peggy: Thanks for the resources!!. I've tried Relax drink, but it has mag citrate in it and gives me heartburn. Psyllium causes bloating and it does contain traces of gluten so I've tried to avoid that. Smooth Move tea works in a pinch. I really don't like using Miralax for my dtr, so these are great natural alternatives. Take care, > > > I like this product for help with constipation.
