He put me on these two drugs ,,,,exactly what do you suggest for some one who is feeling pretty ****ty and is EXTREMELY sensitive, and has a stomach who is hating her from doxi last month to do starting this protocal. Should i try by starting one at a time to make sure i dont have a bad reaction.. ? Like i just took the antibiotic by itself to start, As i want to know how im effected so i dont get confused as to which one is making me ill or not. Is it ok to start off smaller on the doses? Has anyone else been on this combo of medicine? Anything else anyone can suggest? he told me to take metamucal 10 mins prior to taking medicine.... I dont remember him specifically saying take the two togather or not. thanks for any help  Posted by radfaraf (Member # 11909) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,21,21,40,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 21 August, 2009 09:40 PM08-21-2009 09:40 PM:  You should always start things one at a time if you can because then you can tell better what is causing what effect.  Posted by sammy (Member # 13952) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,21,21,51,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 21 August, 2009 09:51 PM08-21-2009 09:51 PM:  I took clarithromycin (aka: Biaxin)and hydroxychloroquine (aka: Plaquenil) together for several months. Since you already started the antibiotic, stick with that for a couple days, see how you tolerate it. Then add the Plaquenil. You can take both meds at the same time and with food. Food will help prevent upset stomach.  Posted by Camber (Member # 21694) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,21,21,57,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 21 August, 2009 09:57 PM08-21-2009 09:57 PM:  Thanks = )  Posted by seekhelp (Member # 15067) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,22,0,33,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 22 August, 2009 12:33 AM08-22-2009 12:33 AM:  Liked Biaxin a lot, hated Plaquenil.  Posted by A (Member # 9128) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,22,9,52,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 22 August, 2009 09:52 AM08-22-2009 09:52 AM:  Biaxin is easier on the stomach than doxy. It can also make you depressed temporarily, or other psychological/emotional symptoms, so watch out for that sneaking up on you. I found that if I stopped it for a couple of days the feelings would go away, and now it never happens anymore. I don't get the metamucil part- I think it's psyllium husk, which I'd worry about binding up some of yo9ur medicine and making it not as available for absorption. He's probably thinking that it prevents constipation (it can act as both an anti-diarrhea and as a laxative, which sounds odd but works differently depending on what's wrong and how much you're taking). I would ask him the rationale next time. also, that combo of drugs is VERY effective according to a number of doctors.  Posted by Lyme ED (Member # 3191) on document.write(timestamp(new Date(2009,7,22,10,28,0), dfrm, tfrm, 0, 0, 0, 0)); 22 August, 2009 10:28 AM08-22-2009 10:28 AM:  I don't have personal experience to share, but FWIW am chiming in to say I know a guy who has Lyme that has been on this combo (Biaxin/plaq) for a few years now and does extremely well on it -- he is virtually symptom free so long as he takes it. He told me that he did not do nearly as well when he took Biaxin alone, which he tried first. Adding in the Plaquenil made the difference for him. Don't know that it would work as well for patients with co-infections or more severe neuro symptoms, which he didn't have. Everyone is different, but for at least for some, this combo can bring much improvement.  © 1994-2009 The Lyme Disease Network of New Jersey, Inc. .
