Guest guest
Quite often when I try something, my throat closes. It happened when I tried the grapefruit seed extract. Does anyone know whether this reaction is a herx or an allergic reaction? Thx - Robin In a message dated 9/1/2008 6:45:57 P.M. Quite amazing... Go to their group and do a search on " biotin " or " GSE " and read other postings. With blessings, Molly p.s. This message was posted as " GES/Biotin and OCD " , but I changed the topic line to " GSE " when I forwarded it to this group. Just thought I would report how the GSE/Biotin is going for the OCD. I started it 2 and a half days ago and about 1 day in the constant finger licking slowed down a GREAT deal. Then by the next morning it was completely gone and still is. even said that it was gone and that he felt much better now. I am in a state of disbelief! I can't believe that this is really working, but it does seem to be the case. I will see if more symptoms fade as the days go on here. Guest guest
Explain 'throat closes'. Does it mean you can't breathe anymore? Many lyme sufferers have trouble with swallowing, no matter what. I had, it was very difficult to ingest pills, no matter which, the problem was with swallowing itself, not related to allergy. Sometimes even food didn't go down. This seems common in lyme. GSE is a strong supplement. I never heard a herx = throat closes. But I certainly know that throat getting blocked can be a serious allergic reaction and cause death if untreated (death by suffocation). I guess it is not your case, as you would have run to the hospital when that started happening. Not only the throat closes, but eyes too, you get unable to open your eyes when the allergic reaction is strong because they swell (as much as your throat). Guest guest
i sneeze after ingesting GSE liquid drops. i take it anyway. if you have a reaction within seconds after ingesting, it has to be an allergy - i don't see how it could be a herx. Guest guest
Thx, Steve and Selma - I'm supposing at this point that this is an allergic reaction, since a herx couldn't happen that fast, ie, within a couple seconds. This happens often with powerful supplements. Needless to say, I always test the smallest amount and am ready with benadryl. I am really sensitive, like I react to most things I try. I seem to pass the anti-oxidants the best, like with mangosteen juice, noni juice, grape seed extract, no problems. - Robin In a message dated 9/2/2008 4:45:41 P.M. Guest guest
Hi if your throat is actually swelling then yes definitely get an allergy test to avoid harm BUT GSE is very astringent ( I take it on occasion) and sometimes it FEELS like youre throat is raw or closing or you have to clear it, and diluting it more may help with this. You can also chase it with a thick soothing substance like a bit of honey!! ?BUT I wouldnt test it again before you have an allergy test a local reaction isnt the same as " allergy " -that requires histamine and mast cell involvement as well as ( usually)actual sweilling ( hives, or general swelling)- local reactions are more like spasms when contact is made--as if your throat is pulling away saying ouch ( like your fingers would if pricked by a thorn). These muscle spasms can feel as if youre choking. Many who are sensitive to various substances have this and if the spasms are severe its as dangerous as true allergic type swelling because the result is the same--constricting airway. also with allergy, the eyes arent always affected even with anaphylaxis--Ive had various serious allergic responses, some almost fatal, and in each case I had various swellings--never the entire face--eyes plus mouth etc.. Ive had lips tongue and throat, then Ive had eyes and lips, then Ive had eyes and chest hives!!! so as a rule anytime you feel as if you cant breathe, it may you need a Dr to assess or ER if after hours!! and be aware the touble swallowing some of us have shoudl be evaluated as it can be the first signs of intolerance to a herb or drug, or a nervous system worsening or even CHIARI if the brainstem is being compromised itll affect swallowing--very common first sign as is voice changes!!. Chiari can be caused ( secondary) or triggered ( primary) by Lyme and far too many with Lyme are underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed and who actually have this. Any change in what I call the major life supporting areas ( breathing swallowing heart function) should always be evaluated by a medical professional!! be well Finette
Guest guest
Thx, Finette - do you know if throat swelling is part of an allergic reaction, with histamine and mast cell reactivity? I get this reaction often when I test supplements. - Robin In a message dated 9/4/2008 7:13:43 A.M.
