Virus - Alert in our newsgroup

I just quarantined a virus I picked up on my computer........since I have

only been reading emails from lyme-aid and restless leg groups. It means I

probably picked it up from one of these two groups and it also means I may

have passed it along.......run your anti-virus program, and get it

quarantined.

Sorry I didn't catch it sooner...........its

W95.Hybris.Plugin...............comes from the worm

W95.Hybris.gen

After infecting a system, the W95.Hybris.gen worm attempts to connect to the

newsgroup alt.comp.virus. If the worm connects successfully, it does the

following:

1. Uploads its own encrypted plug-ins to this newsgroup.

2. Goes through the subject headers of the newsgroup messages, looks for

other attached plug-ins, and tries to match a specific format. The subject

header will specify the version number of the attached plug-in.

3. If a newer version of a plug-in is found, the worm downloads the more

recent module and updates it's behavior.

1. Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus

definitions.

2. Make sure that Norton AntiVirus is set to scan all files.

3. Restart the computer in Safe mode (Windows 95/98/Me).

4. Run a full system scan.

If Norton AntiVirus detects W32.HybrisF, reboot into Normal mode and

download and run the W95.HybrisF fix tool. This tool will repair any Windows

executable files that have been infected by the W32.HybrisF.plugin.

If Norton AntiVirus detects an infection other than W32.HybrisF, choose to

repair any infected files. If Norton AntiVirus cannot repair the files,

choose to delete them.

5. When the scan is finished, reboot into Normal Mode.

Leave no stone unturned.......

Yeah, I received it in an e-mail from you when I read my mail this morning

but my Norton caught it and put it in quarantine right away so there was no

problem. Love that Norton e-mail virus program ... works like a charm!!

You can go to Postini.com and possibly get your email to go through that

site. The upside is that they quarantine any potential virus. The downside

is ( for a few weeks ) 75% or your mail is quarentined and you have to go

retrieve it. Once you get odd email senders approved, its great. Has cught

several for me. Probably caught the one you talked about.

Hi All,

Again I urge you to turn off html. Send your

email as " plain text " only. This will help

reduce the transmission of viruses.

Thanks, Jack

All you need is some virus alert- software. A common one is Norton

Anti-Virus...You might already have it on your computer.....just make sure

it is activated so it can catch viruses before they cause destruction....or

you can also run a virus scan on all your files....it will locate it and fix

it for you if it can......or it will quarantine the virus for you.

You update the software, through them, downloading the latest virus alerts

from their website.

This particular virus does a number on your plugins...I had to redownload my

realplayer for my CD's

Maybe we got it in time..........and it has been stopped.

I hope so.........Had I had my current updates on my Norton

anti-virus,.......it would have caught the virus for me......so it didn't

attach itself to my emails.

Hope that explains somewhat........Connie

Leave no stone unturned.......

We already have the McCaffey but we no longer have any free downloads and

that is why I asked if it was a new virus or not. We don't have the money

to get the downloads. I wanted to know how new this virus is so that we'll

know if we are O.K. or not.
