+++Hi Phyllis. The elemental amount is the amount your body absorbs

and it is the amount I recommend. If each tablet contains 100 mg

of " elemental magnesium " you need to take 6 tablets per day. If it

didn't state the " elemental amount " you'd need to take more in order to

absorb the amount needed.

+++The same is true for your calcium citrate as for magnesium. You

should do okay taking 250 mg elemental 2 times a day (you can cut up a

tablet to get a little bit more so it is 300 mg elemental twice a day;

but don't be overly concerned since you do get calcium in foods too.)

+++Hi Phyllis. Thos Carlson's pills cause problems, since it is so

difficult to get the right amounts of A, D & Omega 3 from them:

To get enough:

Vitamin A you need to take 10 capsules/day

Vitamin D you need to take 5 capsules/day

Omega 3 you'd need 8 capsules/day

That is why cod liver oil liquids are much better.

You could take 5 capsules per day which only gives you enough Vitamin

D. Also buy a separate Vitamin A from a liver oil like shark,

halibut or cod (without any D in it) and take 10,000 IU/day.

Also buy a separate fish oil Omega 3, like Nordic Naturals and take 1

teaspoon.

That's the best I can recommend.

20,000iu supplement of Vitamin A as your web site suggest.

Hi Marisa, I believe someone from the group has chated with NOW brand

and was told that NOW lists their elemental amount on the label, so

you don't need to figure out how much more extra to take. Please do a

search for the messages on group to find that message, please do not

rely on my memory alone :):)

You can think of " elemental amounts " as a " minimum requirement " or

'lemon " essence " rather then lemon' to help you understand the

concept. I to am bilingual, this is the best I can come up:)

Also think of the Table of Elements from the Chemistry class.

Here's something I found online:

supplements to look for the amount of elemental calcium noted on the

product label, not the amount of calcium carbonate, calcium citrate,

or calcium phosphate, Dr. Gail Greendale advised.

calcium that provides the benefit to bone, she said at a meeting on

controversies in women's health sponsored by the University of

California, Los Angeles.

Most supplements contain calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, or

each compound differs widely. For example, most chewable calcium

supplements like Tums have 500 mg of calcium carbonate, which contains

200mg of elemental calcium, said Dr. Greendale, research director of

I would not worry about " croscarmellose " since that is there in very

minute amounts; it it has no yeast starch soy gluten milk then you're

OK. Not very many brands make their supplements free of allergens like

sugar, east, soy, gluten, milk, etc because it costs more.

NOW it's a very good brand known for making allergen free supplements.

I didn't find the discussion about NOW calcium / magnesium and the

elemental amounts, but I will communicate with NOW to get an answer if

no one else knows for sure + I will search the forum again.

I am happy to hear onc again that NOW is an ok brand. I found their

products extremely cheap, and I was worried. You see, if I had bought

all the supplements from a health store in Greece it would have cost

me more than 500$........and now I ordered them from US and I just

paid 80$ (shipping costs to Greece included + taxes

included).......Imagine that a 30 capsules magnesium supplement may

cost 20-25$ in Greece....For the last 3 months I have spent a fortune

on supplements....

+++Hi Marisa. Carmen helped you with this too, but just so you

understand more - not all of the calcium or magnesium we consume will

be absorbed by the body. The " elemental amount " is the amount of the

mineral your body is able to absorb or " get " from the total amount

contained in the supplement. The same is true of foods. Our bodies

only absorb 50% of minerals contained in foods too - so, in order to

get 600 mg you have to consume 1200 mg.

+++The body absorbs some forms (or types) of mineral supplements

better than others. There are many types available, including oxide,

carbonate, gluconate, lactate, etc.

+++For example: the calcium and magnesium " carbonate " form is the

kind used in calcium and magnesium citrate, and your body only

absorbs 40% of it, called the " elemental amount, " but the whole

tablet or capsule contains 100%, so you aren't able to absorb 60% of

it.

+++Yes, you can take more magnesium at a time, but it is better to

buy 150 mg tablets since there may be times you need a little extra

because you are getting leg or foot cramps caused by an imbalance of

calcium and magnesium.

+++It is okay to take 400 IU at one time, instead of 200 IU 2 times a

day.

list:

Vitamin C

Buy a tablet that contains rosehips, citrus bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin.

Some vitamin C brands may not contain all of these substances, which is fine

too. To avoid getting loose stools (diarrhea) from vitamin C, which is called

the bowel tolerance level, start with 500 mg 2-3 times a day and gradually

increase it. Diarrhea is also a die-off/detoxifying symptom that your body

creates in order to get rid of toxins, so don't always suspect vitamin C when it

occurs.

Ascorbic acid powder or crystals are much less expensive to take than vitamin C

tablets. If you wish to take ascorbic acid, take 3,000 mg per day and 1,000 mg

vitamin C tablet, which is a total of 4,000 mg vitamin C per day. Because

ascorbic acid can upset the stomach it is best to take it with meals. It can be

hard on the teeth too, so rinse your mouth well after drinking it.

Do not use sodium ascorbate, since it contains calcium and magnesium, or

possibly baking soda. If there is any calcium and magnesium in your vitamin C

you won't be able to regulate taking the correct amounts of calcium and

magnesium. Baking soda is high in sodium which is diuretic, meaning it makes the

body get rid of water and minerals along with it.

Vitamin C Dose: Take 4,000 mg total per day, in doses divided between 3 meals.

Start with 500 mg twice a day and gradually increase it to avoid getting loose

stools. If you get loose stools lower the dose for awhile and take more time to

Bee, I don't have access to all the recommended brands of supplements, so I have

to make modifications at some, and I had a hard time choosing vit C.

I bought two types, both from NOW, one that is in tablet form and has Vit C (as

Ascorbic Acid) 1,000 mg & Rose Hips Powder (Seed) 25mg.

And the other is in capsule form and I bought it just for the bioflavonoids

content. It has Vit C (as Ascorbic Acid) 50 mg, Citrus Bioflavonoids (37% Total

+++I'm leaving it more open and loose for a reason. That is because it is more

important to get ascorbic acid, whether the capsule or tablet contains the other

ingredients or not. The ascorbic acid mixed in water is harder on the stomach

and the teeth than capsules or tablets.

take **at least** 1,000 mg of tablets or capsules per day that contain

bioflavonoids, etc.

+++I usually recommend women get more bioflavonoids because it is important for

Albeit , if Vitamin C Brands need not contain all substances which include "

bioflavonoids " , then 1,000 mg would not be present unlike what is stated in

the supplements chart .

Thus my reference & curiosity to it being opposite . A small discrepancy, I

suppose .

However , again , it is good to understand the slight variations in supplement

needs for men and women . I thank you, Bee .

So no matter what brand/type of vit C we take, the 4,000 mg a day have to come

from Ascorbic Acid? The rosehips, citrus bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin are

like a bonus and we don't count them in the total dosage?

+++Hi Ed. The label will say how much ascorbic acid is in the product even if

there aren't any other substances in it like bioflavonoids.

1,000 mg is the amount of ascorbic acid a person needs to take, and not the

amount of the other substances that could be included.

My Apologies , I meant and was thinking of the 3,000 mg of Bioflavanoids you

were recommending , not the ascorbic acid .

This was in reference to the statement ,

Thus, you confirmed the reason was to address women's bleeding issues.

Hi,

Any suggestions to condense the supplements recommended? Is there a multi that

comes fairly close and then I could add on? I already give my son a fair amount

along with a multi from Prothera.
