Hi Lynne,

Your son sounds a lot like my son,(now 15) and the way he was at 6. He has

an autism diagnosis, and later got an additional OCD and Tourette's

diagnosis. He has a lot of sensory issues too. Sounds line PDD/NOS

diagnosis might be what they will come up with so that he is eligible fr

services, though. Is he receiving services through your school system

without too many hassles? Main reason to get a diagnosis that they will

accept is for services, otherwise, hate to say it, but it doesn't really

matter in the end if the treatment plan is the same.

My younger child who has a PDD/NOS diagnosis (girl, 9) has as her main

symptom apraxia. I am beginning to see some aggresive behaviors that are

new (and scary) and could be pre-puberty hormonal issues, or something

more. The reason she was given a PDD diagnosis was really to get services,

without that the schools wouldn't provide the intense programs she needed.

An Asperger's diagnosis seems to be trickier, the school systems often

don't understand it, although it is certainly legitimate. Asperger's is

also more difficult in my state to be declared eligible for services from

the DMR (Dept. of Mental Retardation, in MA, all individuals with

developmental disabilities are serviced through this agency, whether MR or

not) not that this is a big deal at your child's age anyway.

I don't know anyone in your area, but a good developmental pediatrician to

look at all these diagnoses would be in order. I suggest you contact the

local chapter of the ARC and ask for a referral there. If you can't find

one, email me, or ask here and I will contact the local Autism Support

center (I am on the parent board there) to see if they have any referral

for your area.

Kennedy Kreiger has a great reputation for speech issues, what did you

think?

Kennedy Kreiger center is in Baltimore, it is the closest teaching hospital

to the person who was in VA that I am aware of for kids like ours.

While I am sure there are others, this one is renowned.

They are great with speech and language issues and diagnoses.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.. Since my last email to you I've

gone to a search engine to look them up. They seem quite complete in what

they do & from their site, appear to have well qualified professional staff.

Thanks again. V
