Guest guest
Hey, Jules, I’m glad to hear you awoke in time to see fireworks on July 4th. You’re lucky to have your mom give you lots of TLC. TIPS: -Did you buy a reacher? (I loved my 36” & couldn’ t imagine recuperating without it!) -Did a physical or occupational therapist review your living conditions, to see if your bed/couch/chairs/bath are suitable? If not, ask your doctor about getting a referral. -Instead of wearing the recommended cotton T-shirt under the brace as it got too hot & stayed damp, I liked wearing high tech, moisture wicking clothes. (As a runner & backpacker, I had lots of gear. Patagonia is my favorite.) Silk underwear T-shirt was fabulous, too. -Buy a long gel pack (the kind that freezes & microwaves). Freeze it, lay on it, & then strap on your brace for ~15 minutes. Little bit of heaven, plus it’ll keep you cool. Later you’ll need it when you start physical therapy. -Rather than the generic 2-wheeler walker that everyone uses, I got a 4-wheeler walker (huge wheels) that had a built-in tray (so that I didn’t have to make multiple trips for my stuff) that doubled as a seat when I tired. (Now I use it to carry the laundry basket & groceries.) -Sleep on your back, with pillows under your knees. -Try a 3” foam mattress topper for comfort, especially when your doctor wants you to get off the addictive pain meds. -Get a neck support pillow. Ditto for above. (I got Tempur-Pedic. ComfortZone is selling at CostCo for ¼ of the T-P price.) -I assume you’re taking lots of calcium, right? I nearly choked on the horse pills, so I switched to Tums. -The brace will fit you if you lose weight (I did). Cut the foam layer back & strap it tighter. If you gain weight, your brace will no longer fit & provide good support for your back. -When you’re ready for physical therapy, ask your PT about sleeping on your stomach. (Not recommended ever.) I’ve been out of my brace for ~1 month, & it’s brilliantly FANTASTIC!!! Your time will come. Are you saying you had burst fractures in EACH vertebra T12-L3 --- from blunt trauma? BTW, any way for you to post that very cool tattoo? HI everyone Hi... Well its july... whoo hoo.. while most peps my age are out in the sun having fun... im cooped up in moms house nursing this broken back ..back to health .. well i hope everyones 4th was fun and safe ( i slept till 8pm on the 4th). I was wondering how everyone is doing and if anyone has fractured their back. I had the blunt trama from the seat belt which caused burst fractures in T12-L3. I know many of you are worse off which makes me sad and i wish you all the best. I know that mine will hopefully heal right and i pray for you all. If anyone in here has had emergency spinal surgery or has had spinal fusion and the iliac crest bone graft from your own pelvis .. please feel free to give me any pointers on good sleeping postions or anything with living life better (and well i cant sleep on my stomach yet b/c of the blunt trama to my abdomnial area. its still very sore but the incision healed) But any pointers will be helpful. Thanks so much .. hugs. JULES
Guest guest
Sounds like you could have an infection somewhere. If you take ibuprofen, it can enhance the effects on your liver taking other meds. Have you had your thyroid function checked? I have hyperthyroid and my BP went up drastically. Autoimmune diseases can wreak havoc on your thyroid. The contractors finally finished the work here yesterday so that's all over, I just need to clean up what they didn't then prep the old barn for repair now. (that'll be a few weeks of work) I'm feeling ok and hope everyone else is too. My hair's getting thinner all the time but I trimmed the top so it fluffs up a little more to hide that. This coming Wednesday is the halfway mark (shot 12) for me so that's something to celebrate. Only 12 more to go! Wooo hoooo! lol Take care and talk to you all soon. Gayle (((BIG hug!)))
