Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am new here. I don't know if i am supposed to or not, but I guess I will start with my story..so you can get to know me. I live in Nj and at the end of November I was bitten by a tick. I didn't know how to remove ticks and it was in an awkward place, so it took quite a few yanks to pull it out. The site immediately burned and throbbed. I went to my gp to have it documented and checked out. I was sent home saying the reaction is like when a mosquito bites you and to watch for a rash. The rash never came, but two weeks later i had a sore throat..didn't think anything of it. Then i had left side facial numbness..which scared me so i hopped onto the internet to see what i could find. LD came up and it made me think. My dog had already been diagnosed and treated so i know it is in my back yard. So i went to my gp again. I told the nurse what was going on and what my thoughts on it. I was admonished for going on the internet< " there is such a thing as too much information!!! " > She told me she gets hysterical people. I simply told her i am not hysterical i am telling you what i think. She then told me lyme does not happen that fast anyhow and to let the dr's and nurses worry about it. This of course made me angry..of course I am going to worry about it, it is my health! So i saw my gp..told her the same thing i told the nurse plus about my dog..She went ahead and gave me amoxicillin for 28 days. Two weeks into the amox, i had an onslaught of symptoms. Back and neck burning, tingly legs and arms, numb legs that won't work, numb scalp, tingly jaw, travelling pain, had a fog episode, i couldn't talk on some mornings becuz i would forget what i was saying, total body pain, depression etc. You all know the drill. I believe this was me herxing. Meanwhile i went to see a LLMD that someone had emailed me. What i found out is this person only treats if you pull a positive pcr and only treats with iv. The told me from the size of the tick i described<i said it was bigger than a period<.>> there was no way it could be lyme and not to take anymore antibiotics after the amox..i shouldn't do that to myself..I had two pcrs which were of course negative. They probably told me no meds so they could try and get a pos pcr...for a doctor that thinks there is no way i have lyme, he wanted me to come back every two weeks to get tested. Anyhow, toward the end of the amox , i was feeling great. Two weeks after the amox was done, all the symptoms came rushing back. I talked to my gp who would not give me anymore meds. She wanted me to come in and have a urine test done becuz my back was my chief complaint. So went through a couple weeks feeling horrible..and got to the point where i couldn't even drive. Luckily i got sick on top of it with some kind of chest cold<don't think it was related but maybe> I called my gp told her my symptoms and she called in biaxin without even seeing me ...10 days. I also called my allergist thinking i could get him to prescribe if he thought was a sinus infection..which it could have been. He called in 10 days of augmentin without seeing me. I started the biaxin<have taken it before and tolerated it> On my second pill, three hours later, i started shaking uncontrollably, my legs went numb and i had a buring sensation in my back. It scared me and i didn't think herx. I called my doc who told me to stop taking . He said he didn't know what was going on becuz that wasn't an allergic reaction. So i realized what it was. I started taking it again. The third pill i had a little one 4 hours later, my back burned and my jaw went tingly as did my scalp. Then it was over..I am still taking it now, and seem to be doing well with it. I have a wonderful online contact who has helped me through this with her education about lyme. I am in the process of finding an LLMD, becuz i am not sure if twenty days of meds plus the 28 i already took will be enough. I have had problems in the past, some similar symptoms, so the more i learn the more i wonder if i already had ld and this bite sent into haywire. I have taken quite a few antibiotics in my life, so maybe it helped if i had it before so it never got this bad. I am having trouble finding someone to help me. I do want to try to stay in my insurance, tho i know finding a doc that will treat who takes insurance is hard. I cannot afford to pay out of pocket right now.. So that is where i am now , i am looking forward to becoming a part of this group. Support is a wonderful thing..

At the time I didn't realize that the ABX was causing the reaction, had no idea what was happening, for, if I did, I would have stopped the infusion immediately. I had uncontrollable chills & shaking for hours, plus all the other stuff you described. Plus, in my case, I had Sciatic-like, electric-shock-like, nerve pains running all the way from my pelvis & hips down the back of both legs to the bottoms of my feet. It felt like I kept getting electrocuted & burned. It was definitely the IV, as when I tried to infuse again, after it subsided, it took only a few seconds of infusing before all these symptoms started again. Interestingly, altho I thought it was an allergic reaction, it wasn't. I'm not sure what it was, but by taking one Xanax tablet each day, I am able to continue infusing every day, with few side effects. Hope it helps for you to know that someone else had the same reaction. Reading what happened to you somehow made me feel better, that I wan't imagining any of it. I knew it couldn't have been an allergic reaction since i had taken it before with no probs. Plus i am a veteran of allergies! I get so excited when someone else says..hey that happened to me too..you should see me..I would do a jig if i had the energy:) Thanks again roberta!
