Guest guest
http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,469|Relafen,00.html This link gives you more information about Relafen. It is an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) that helps the symptoms of RA or related problems but does not slow or stop the joint damage. If you have RA or a related disease you need a DMARD (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug) and the most common first one is Methotrexate but sometimes a doctor will use something else like Plaquenil or Sulfasalazine. The blood work can neither prove nor disprove RA but it is useful as a diagnostic and to rule out other possible causes. I am not familiar with osteonecrosis but it does sound like you are doing the right things to check on it. With respect to the warning labels that come with medicines I want to point out that they are written by lawyers to guard against law suits instead of being written by doctors to inform patients. The warning labels do indeed list possible side effects without regard to how well-established the side effects are. Most side effects are unlikely and reverse when the medication is stopped. I use prudence with any medication but don’t usually let fear of side effects stop me from taking them. However, each of us has to decide for ourselves what will work for them. God bless. From: Rheumatoid Arthritis [mailto:Rheumatoid Arthritis ] On Behalf Of robamay1124 Sent: Monday, July 10, 2006 5:30 AM Rheumatoid Arthritis Subject: possible diagnosis Good Morning Everyone, My name is Rob. I am 34 years old and I saw a Rheumatologist this past week. She did a clinical exam, x-rays and blood work. The doc did x-rays on my pelvis and my feet. The pelvis because I have been diagnosed in the past with osteonecrosis(ON) in both hips. I made an appointment with this doc after I found some information stating that RA could be a cause for ON. The doc stated that the x-rays of the pelvis showed sacroilitiis and the x-rays of the feet showed some mild to moderate arthritis. Upon examination, she also found nodules on my feet. Because I often have pain in several joints, she also made a diagnosis of polyarthalgia. She also stated that the blood work would be back sometime in the middle of this week. She stated that she couldn't say for certain, but she is leaning towards a diagnosis of RA, but wanted to wait for the blood work. She went ahead and gave me a perscription of Relafen. I have concerns about taking these types of medication because of the heart attack and stroke warnings. I am afraid I have no choice. The pain seems to get worse with each passing day. I am writing this today because I would like some advice. Based upon the experiences of the members of this group, what are some of my options? I guess a better way of asking it is, what are some things I need to be aware of, things to look out for, and things that I should be asking my doc when I see her again in 2 months? Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for the support. Rob
Guest guest
Check out this link for some relavent information on RA. http://www.niams.nih.gov/bone/hi/osteoporosis_ra.htm Grab yourself a Biologic first off, some Actonel and a good multi vitamin with calcium, folic acid and biotin. I dont think the RD will prescribe prednisone because of the damage it does to the hip bones (new research shows) but a biologic would start working straight away. They have injectibles, infusion drugs, and something should work. Try and rely on Ibuprofen rather than an opiate as the create a cycle of break through pain, ( the more you take, the more you need) and also research the benefits of cyclosporine to help your symptoms as well as joint protection. Glucosamine and chondritin with collagen and or hyluran can also be of benefit to you. If you smoke, try to stop. Get a foam 2 inch mattress pad for your bed and a nice firm mattress underneath. If you do get a positive diagnosis, which having nodules, is more than likely, be sure to visit www.arthritisfoundation.org for support groups in your area. They really really do help you. Think about getting into a warm pool for PT as well. Be sure to consult with your doctor. Good luck, Deborah On 7/10/06, robamay1124 <ramay71@...> wrote: Good Morning Everyone,My name is Rob.
