Guest guest
Does anyone else with babesia have abnormal blood iron test results? My % Fe saturation is high and TIBC is too low. This suggests iron overload to my doc and he has ordered genetic testing for hemochromatosis, a hereditary iron-overload disease. It can be fatal and the only treatment is blood letting! With inaccessible veins, I'm pretty disturbed at this turn of events. Also, I am wondering if this isn't caused by babesia which I definitely have (along with Lyme) but it has not yet been treated. Here's the reason I think it is babesia instead of hemochromatosis. Malaria, babesia and bartonella all infect the red blood cells and cause hemolysis. This causes iron from the destroyed rbc's to spill out. Malaria is known to be associated with higher iron saturation, for this reason. But most U.S. doctors don't know anything about malaria and not much has been published on human babesia, nothing at all that I can find on iron levels and babesia. s Hopkins just got $100 million donated for study of malaria, so maybe this will help to some extent with babesia since they have similar disease processes. And docs in this country are using anti- malarials to treat babesia. I would sure like to know if there's a correlation between iron saturation and babesia. It would be interesting and not very difficult to research it. Lou
