I don't know why it is. I have pulled apart capsules and eaten it and it

doesn't have much taste (I used HealthSmart brand). I know of one kid who

doesn't swallow capsules who is having it mixed into his food and it is doing

him a lot of good.

,

Do you have pear juice without corn syrup? I looked for that in the grocery

store and did not find it.

Thanks for the tip,

Heidi

Hi a,

Jeannette again, yes, I was taking Milk Thistle for quite some time and my

liver enzymes both went up on it and went down and up again and down. So,

who knows if it helps because at the same time my MTX dosage was going up and

down too. I have heard from numerous sources, including the pharmacist, that

it is good for detoxifying the liver. It is however quite expensive. Right

now, since the beginning of this week, I am off again only because of the

expense. A bottle of 60 costs $8.XX and you are suppose to take it four X

day. If I could get my hands on a huge bottle that costs reasonable, I would

continue taking it. It can't hurt I am sure.

Jeanette,

Milk thistle is routinely prescribed by doctors in Europe, specifically for

liver disorders such as hepatitis c, hepatitis b and cirrhosis. It's a shame

that they can't prescribe it here just as they do folic acid. The cost of

supplements is a downfall when we can get our meds cheaper with prescription

plans. If I find a reliable resource for the milk thistle, I'll let you

know. My liver enzymes are ok, so I don't have to take it, but I sure take

a lot of other things, and am always looking for good prices.

P.S. we love your yapping :)

Now I know what you were talking about.....Milk Thistle. I had been taking

it for at least 6 months with dr. approval. I just recently stopped because

of the price. That is why I am looking to find a place where I can get it in

a larger quantity and a cheaper price. Thanks.

All I know, Janet, is that the milk thistle in the capsules are from

European milk thistle, not the same thing as we have here. The active

ingredient is silmaryn. I can't say whether this would bother you or

not. You might want to speak to an allergist about it.

<<Can anyone suggest a brand of milk thistle that they think will give the best

results?

Thanks Much!>>

I think that it's all pretty standard. I take TruNature 200 mg softgels. They

recommend 1 softgel 3 times a day. Before a liver flush I have doubled it a

couple of weeks before, and, I am convinced that I've had better flushes because

of it.

from what i've read and what i've been told (although honestly, i

haven't asked my rheumy, mainly because i hadn't given it much

thought until after i saw him and after i started the mtx and because

i know he doesn't know a whole lot about homeopathics/supplements and

stuff although he does know the folic acid depletion but i guess

everyone does . . . . . oye, sorry, i'm rambling).

anyhow, my understanding is there really isn't any negative

interaction with other meds and/or supplements and that it's okay to

take. i did ask my pharmacist but he also didn't know much either way.

i did google the milk thistle and read a bunch of articles about it

before starting it. also quite a few veterinary articles (i have two

greyhounds) since i know many people who have had their dogs on it

for various reasons (chemo being a main one).

if you get any more info, please let us know.

thnx, bonnie/boys

There is a place at the above site where

you can check interactions of milk thistle with medications and many other

herbals. I only checked it for Methotrexate and there is no interaction. God

bless.

I used milk thistle to help my liver after enzymes shot up due to methotrexate. The docs were astonsihed at how quickly my liver enzymes got okay after using milk thistle a couple of weeks.....good stuff...really helped me out.

Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle: The seeds, fruit, and leaves of Milk Thistle have been used since the Roman times as a liver tonic. Also known as n, St. 's, and Our Lady's thistle, the herb is native to Europe. Originating in the Mediterranean region and grown and used as a vegetable throughout Europe, it was brought to the United States and has adapted to life in the wild in California and along the East Coast. It is a tall plant with large prickly leaves and a reddish purple flower. The white spots along the ribs of the leaves were said to have been drops of the Virgin 's milk. The medicinal use of milk thistle goes back two thousand years. Medieval herbalists also made use of this, and in the sixteenth century English herbalists adopted it. It did not maintain its popularity, however, and by the early twentieth century only homeopaths were familiar with it. With a renewal of interest in herbal medicines, researchers started to investigate milk thistle scientifically in the 1950s. The part of the plant that is used is the small hard fruit, without the fuzz, and the seeds, which contain fatty acids and flavonoids. Milk Thistle helps maintain healthy liver function. This is important because the liver performs more than 500 functions in the body per day and is the last line of defense in handling toxins. The liver detoxifies poisons (such as alcohol and pollutants) that enter our bloodstream. Milk Thistle's silymarin stimulates the flow of bile from the liver, the primary function of which breaks down poisons and fats. This herb is generally highly recommended by herbalists as a "staple" in the herbal medicinal chest.

Milk Thistle extracts contain 70 to 80% silymarin. Many clinical studies have shown silymarin has therapeutic effects in treating several types of liver disorders such as cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and fatty infiltration of the liver. Milk thistle is used to treat a number of liver conditions including slowing the advancement of liver cirrhosis. It may be helpful in treating Hepatitis B. It has been shown to stimulate protein synthesis within the liver, leading to tissue regeneration, fights pollutants, inhibits free-radical damage, and helps skin conditions related to poor liver function. Biopsies and laboratory studies have demonstrated that silymarin protects the liver from the damaging effects of alcohol and toxic chemicals and stimulates the production of new liver cells to replace damaged ones. Silymarin may also help prevent or treat gallstones by increasing the solubility of the bile. Milk thistle extracts have shown very low toxicity, even when taken over a long period of time however, any serious medical condition requires professional care and anyone being treated for liver ailments should ask their doctor prior to taking any herb or herbal preparation.

The herb has also been used historically to treat depression and to increase breast milk production. Today it is a staple of alternative medicine for pregnant and nursing mothers. However, pregnant women and nursing mothers should also always seek professional guidance prior to using any herb or supplement.

Milk thistle should not be administered as a tea or as dried herb because silymarin is neither water-soluble nor readily absorbed from the intestinal tract. Proprietary products standardized to 70 percent silymarin are utilized in Europe at a usual dose of 420 mg daily. Treatment normally lasts four to eight weeks at a minimum. Trials of three and six months are common.

How often and what dosage were you taking? Side effects from milk thistle happen only rarely, but may include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash or other skin reactions, joint pain, impotence, and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction that causes throat tightness, shortness of breath, and, possibly, loss of consciousness.) The last two reactions listed are extremely rare. Milk thistle should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Blua Birdo <bluabirdo@...> wrote: I took it now and then for helping detox liver.
