Does your menstrual cycle seem to effect your disease? It seems like every month I get flares in my fingers and toes right before my period. I was just wondering if anyone else experiemces this.

  • 4 years later...

I had been diagnosed around 2001 with osteopenia (precursor to Osteoporsis). I

took Actonel once per week for about 1 - 1/2 years. There were no real

improvements so I had decided to get off the medication since it did not help

much. I think I was just on the low end of the bell curve and there was not

much that could really help.

Make sure to read all the side effects with the drug you are looking into

taking. My dentist told me that some of the bone density medications can cause

necrosis in the mouth - not common I don't think but can happen in certain

instances.

I try to eat healthy, exercise (weight bearing exercises are good to help with

the bone density issue), take calcium supplements and try to be conscious with

my posture.

That is about all that I do.

I can't say anything about the effectiveness of Fortical

<http://www.fortical.com/>, I've just been on it for a short time.

After a couple of fractures, my doctor prescribed both calcium and

Vitamin D above the level of what I normally take in a daily multi-vitamin.

In addition he prescribed the Fortical. I think its rather unusual in

that it is a nasal spray (once per day in alternate nostrils).

He said that it works to decrease the rate of calcium loss from bones.

I stay away asking my doctor for any particular prescription, but its

good to be informed about medications that are available.

My husband was the one with CMT so my answer may not help you. I read

about all the drugs including Boniva and decided against them based on bone

side effects. I am taking Evista, which has fewer side effects and am having

none. However you might look at
