>>>>> SENATE HEARING ON ‘AUTISM AND THE ENVIRONMENT’ CONFIRMS AUTISM EPIDEMIC

AND POINTS TO MERCURY AND A SHORT LIST OF OTHER CHEMICALS AS TRIGGERS

>>>>>

>>>>> SafeMinds asks for hearings regarding why mercury is currently being

injected into pregnant women, infants and children despite the 1999 promise from

our federal agencies to stop this practice.

>>>>>

>>>>> September 7, 2010, Washington, DC -- A panel of government researchers,

NIH directors and other academics, testifying before the Senate Environment and

Public Works Committee on August 3rd, 2010, confirmed that the autism epidemic

is real, shows no signs of abatement and is caused by environmental triggers.

Senators and researchers also confirmed that mercury, and a short list of other

chemicals known to cause neurological disease, have been under scrutiny as

potential autism triggers by NIH and other top researchers from across the

country.

>>>>> Exposure to mercury is especially damaging to infants and children because

their nervous and immune systems are still developing. During critical windows

of development, exposures to even minute levels of mercury can have lifelong

adverse neurological and health effects. An investigative book, scheduled to be

released September 14th by authors Mark Blaxill and Dan Olmsted, lays out a

compelling argument that autism is a manmade illness resulting from a toxic

injury from mercury exposure in vulnerable infants. Blaxill says that, “The

discoveries in The Age of Autism may come as a shock to the public and medical

world, especially now that government officials have prematurely slammed the

door on a link between mercury and vaccines, but it's backed up with 5 years of

meticulous research, more than 700 footnotes and evidence that builds bit by bit

to jaw-dropping dimensions. The systemic bias and arrogance of the medical

industry that has led to this catastrophe is about to face its most direct

challenge.”

>>>>> In 1999, as part of the FDA Modernization Act, it was discovered that

infants were being exposed to mercury in excess of EPA federal safety

guidelines. At that time the FDA and CDC responded stating that thimerosal

would be phased out of all vaccines as rapidly as possible. The American Academy

of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Public Health

Service all agreed and a historic joint statement calling for the removal of

thimerosal from infant vaccines was signed in 1999.

>>>>>

>>>>> Unfortunately, that promise was broken with the 2001 CDC recommendation

that all pregnant women, infants and children received flu vaccine, which

continues to use the mercury- based preservative thimerosal. SafeMinds is

requesting that congress investigate the policy of injecting mercury into these

vulnerable populations. Recommendations by The Institute of Medicine, the

American Nurses Association, and numerous reports in the scientific literature

all call for the abandonment of thimerosal in vaccines. Public health officials

under sworn testimony in 2000 stated that thimerosal would be taken out “as

rapidly as possible.” SafeMinds wants an answer to the question, “Why does this

practice continue today?”
