Guest guest
Dear Rose, is your child on the vitamin/supplements program to try to help his particular weakensses?? If not, I urge you to get on them immediately and first, before , or while, you're looking for online programs to do at home. There is another option, you can find, buy, some particular program and insist that your school provide a one on one at school to implement and use the program for your child alone, with a computer at their school. I think it's in Federal IDEA laws that the school has to do this, especially if it can be proved that what they're doing isn't working to any extent other than time keeping by baby sitting. Most of the online programs have to bought but there are some freebies here and there...and sometimes there are samples to use with your kids to see if they will respond in any way before you invest in a big set. I'd say most of them also have an added training disc for the one who is to use the program with the child. You can also augment by a using a program of ABA at home. I'd say most of those are for sale items. There are numerous books written by specialists and users that you could get to do some at home programs, if you do or don't take hime out of public schools. If you want to try a computer program, at home or at school, I can suggest several. Sorry they're not on the top of my head today but are in my files. AND..Dana's View often has an immense amount of info about many subjects regarding autism or Dev. Dis. programs. Right now, his being in school is a great respite time for you and, as said, you can alwys use some programs at home to try to boost his attention span... not the lesat of which is the vitamin (bio-therapies). And I suppose there are some who can't be taught but it might be more to the point that there are some parents who don't want to do the rigorous or long term applications needed. This isn't meanst as a condemnation because most all of u have that feeling in us, to some degree or other, just asking that you be sure you want to and can commit to the long haul before deciding that your child is a hopeless case. In this case, I would recommend that you try to buy one of the teaching therapy programs online that are on disc and tell the school that you'd like them to provide the special teacher so he'd be at east exposed to learning during school time instead of being glorified baby sitters. There may be a struggle - with them using all kinds of excuses - but the law is on your side in this. You may have to find an attorney to help you in this, even simple first step, with the school and school board. If you think you can't afford one, there are pro-bono attorneys who do this for low income families or for afjusted lower fees. If you want more detailed help, please go to Dana's site of e-mail me for the name of the program my daughter uses at home. grandma peg ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > I was wondering if I could get some opinions. We have never done a formal home based therapy program, my son was diagnosed at 2 1/2 and we started preschool at age 3. He's now 7 and is still in the public school system. He made no progress since starting at age 3. He is still non-verbal, still very aggressive, still only glueing, cutting, painting, swinging in the OT room and taking walks in the halls. Everytime I try to take him out everyone in our families has a fit, 736 and is disappointed in us. (I only care a little bit) But my husband is really wanting to keep him in school too. He said he'll support whatever I choose, I guess I can't really choose. I was wondering if you guys think that maybe a home-based program would work better, since he's not distracted by sooooooo many things, that really set him off! which is why he can't learn in my opinion. My opinion is that school just isn't for everyone. > > what do you guys do? > > Rose > > > > >
