Guest guest
thats right, you mix up the 17g of powder in 8oz of whatever we usually use orange juice, then he gets 4oz of that 8oz mix twice a day, so gets 4oz with his breakfast and then he usually drinks his other 4oz with his night snack. I got lucky and allsready have two perfect containers that go up to 16oz with lids and everything, one is from a puree thing and the other is from hidden valley ranch, lol, but they work perfectly. Im sure one could find great containers most walmarts or whereever. I just mix up 16oz every couple days and put the container in the fridge keep jucie/miralx fresh. Although it is important for all to try and drink 8 glasses of water a day, the doc said drinking extra fluids doesnt hlep with bm's, just make you pee more, and kidney wise good. sees a specialist, GI Pediatrition for his constipation and other problem i cant remember the name, starts with an " e " have to look at report, lol, momheimers you know. The miralax not only helped tremendously with the constipation, but no more smearing in undies, way less gas problems, and he finally got over his humb in ptty training and has prettty much mastered it, still working on the wiping. shawna. miralax Thanks for the information a, when you say to try 2oz a day- how do you do this when the miralax is a powder and says to mix 17 grams of the powder with 8 oz of water. Do you mix it up and only measure out so many ounces of the mixture or does this also come in liquid form? Also do you use this daily instead of for the two week period or unless directed differently by your dr? The only directions that the doctor wrote were one tablespoon a day. We used Constulose daily for years and would change the amount depending on the " circumstances " I have a call into the DAN Dr. (not the one who prescribed it) , but you probably know more about how to use it than he does. does not drink much water and some days not much liquid either. Guest guest
Have you seen the pediatrician about this? One of my kids (non-DS) had constipation problems when she was 7. She became " impacted " - so constipated that nothing was able to move through. It took an xray to confirm it. After that she had to have an enma a drink about a half gallon of a special liquid to flush everything out and start fresh. After that she was OK. Also we had to make sure she got adequate time in the bathroom every day. - Becky In a message dated 9/9/2005 1:35:14 AM Eastern Standard Time, colleenschildcare@... writes: Does anyone here have any experience with this? Guest guest
My son, , has been on and off miralax for almost 2 years. He will be three on the twentieth of this month. I do not use it everyday but I monitor his poops and if they are hard or he is not going regularly, I end up giving it to him. I usually sprinkle it over his yogurt and he does not even know he is taking it. I also adjust how much I give him, by its effects. Guest guest
My daughter Bridget has been on this everyday for 2 + years now. She has had constipation since birth so severe it was awful. We tried many things from natural (juices etc) to lactulose syrup ( lots of gas & bloating) to suppositories (really hated this) and on and on. Miralax has worked GREAT!!!! We use 1/2 a dose every morning in 4 oz of juice. She doesn't even know it is in there. It is a petroleum product that pulls water into the stool to bulk it up and gives her the feel of needing to go. She generally goes every 2 to 3 days with it. If she isn't going I can increase it 1 or 2 days and she goes, then go back to the reg dosing. After having dealt with this so much, I have been really relieved to find something that works and has not (knock on wood) caused nay side effects. mom to Bridget 12 Miralax Does anyone here have any experience with this? Guest guest
My daughter Olivia has been on Miralax for a long while now - probably 3+ years, and she is 4. She had duodenal atresia at birth, and 2 surgeries to correct it, so that may have made her even more likely to have the constipation issue. I give her now less than a half-dose, and try to monitor her bm's too - they are on the loose side, but if I skip the miralax, she really struggles and cries about having a bm, even though they don't seem very hard. I am so glad to have something tasteless/not uncomfortable to give her to help her with this. Patty Colleen's Child Care <colleenschildcare@...> wrote:Does anyone here have any experience with this? Guest guest
my daughter had a duodenal stenosis and luckily only needed one surgery to do a bypass around this... Guest guest
My doctor just told me NO applesauce or bananas. He said when a person has diarrhea you eat Bananas applesauce and toast. this helps make firmer stools. You want to loosen them. Prunes, prune juice and water. high fiber but the water is what is absorbed in the colon to make the stools softer and move along. Guest guest
My son 17 ds takes Miralax off and on for about 7 months now. I try to give him applesauce a day plus orange juice instead and it does help. But I do monitor close and if it fails him I use Miralax and it does the job. I either mix it in juice, milk, or soda. And routine bathroom visits do help. Miralax > Does anyone here have any experience with this? My daughter who is 8 yrs > old just started this today for her constipation issues. Guest guest
Thanks Becky, I'm going to call the ped again about it. How is doing? I've never heard of that before, but it sounds awful! Guest guest
Becky, I've wondered about the CP issues for Conner too, he was still wearing AFO's two years ago. However, he didn't really start having trouble with constipation until a year or so ago. The miralax seems to do the trick for him, but he really hates the stuff. We've never done much testing for him, do you think we should pursue that if he's doing well on the meds? Guest guest
" I am unsure I feel comfortable with the Miralax being given to him for so long. Is this fairly common? He is 2, but he weighs 44lbs. and is 39in. tall. " Rogena, I was told that to date Miralax is the safest product in the marketplace for a " slow gut " . Many docs are still writing prescriptions for senokot (sp?), bulk laxatives (metamucil), herbal remedies, and drugs that irritate the lining of the gut to get things to move -- and all of these products increase risk of GI damage and should not be used in our kids. My daughter has been on Miralax for 2 years and it has been prescribed for an indefinite period of time. We met with a top-noch GI doc (at Cincy) and he suggested that we use it. Without it, she would risk perforating her gut with stool, bacterial translocation from her gut to her bloodstream (which has already happened), and/or need surgery. This is not uncommon with our kids. Cytokines? Disrupted flora? Autoimmune problems? Inflammation? Pathogens? I don't know the reason for the " slowed gut " yet...but there are some mom's in the group that are determined to find answers for our PIDDers. Often, if you scope, you don't find answers...I don't believe technology has kept up with our children. How much to use? Weight is a good starting point but you have to adjust it based on the kiddo's needs. Our doc had my daughter start really high (to clean her out...it does not work well unless the child gets a " clean out) 2 caps and then we titrated down to 1 cap daily for a few months. Now she gets 2/3 cap and I go a little up or down depending on her symptoms. Extra fluid helps as well (but you have to balance this with the child's kidney status). Just to give you some perspective, she was getting 1 cap a day for 38 lbs. My sister was getting 1 cap a day for 180 lbs! Hope that helps. You are definitely not alone in gut department. mom to CVIDer (4)
Guest guest
" ...it does not work well unless the child gets a " clean out) 2 caps and then we titrated down to 1 cap daily for a few months. " Thanks for this insight, ! I have only been giving him 1 tsp. (not 1 tbsp.) because I was afraid of overdoing it. He is gut is moving a little better, but I think I see the wisdom in " cleaning out " the gut first. I will start tommorow morning with the prescribed dosage and hopefully it will relieve his impacted bowels. I really don't think he will need the full dose to maintain the movement, but I will keep an open mind. It looks like quite a number of the kiddos take it long term, or at least for several months, which is what Flynn will need to do until his GI appt. Thanks again for calming a worried mother's mind! -Rogena (Mom to 4 boys, including Cole -Partial Selective IgA Def, GERD, Asthma, Lactose-Intolerant, Unknown Food Allergen; & Flynn - Unknown PID, GERD, Asthma)

Guest guest
Dana, Less than a year ago, I had a happy, even tempered son. Occasionally there were flare-ups but not bad or serious. He had problems with his personal space being invaded and when we had guests, would go in the other room. He also had anxiety and fears of common things he had experienced in an adverse way, like being afraid of things that fly because a wasp flew down his shirt and stung him a couple of times before we could get it out. Then he just started changing and now he is rude, obnoxious, demanding, and has " behaviors " that could hurt him or someone else. I tried to think back about this. It was about the time they started doing the colonoscopies with the Miralax. Is it possible that Miralax could have caused such a personality change? The first time we used Miralax he got to the place he didn't know when he needed to go to the bathroom. The last time he started having some kidney issues. So they told me to just use Milk of Magnesia with him about 6-9 months ago. That I should give him a spoon every day to keep his bowels moving. But I realized that this works the same way, pulling water out of the rest of the body, because it is a saline solution. D.
