Guest guest
I take the Viactiv (carmels) I have not had that reaction. Although I'm not nurse..... I do think Calcium is very important not only for those of us on restricted food intake but in general for women. Katy
Guest guest
I haven't heard of this taste occurring. You might try the other calcium chewables, like Walgreen's version or those generics in your local pharmacy. Yes, Calcium is extrmely important for both men and women - 1500 mg a day to prevent bone disease and other problems. It's very hard to get this much from just food alone - for Bandsters, it would involve a lot of milk, cheese, yogurt, certain veggies and more far more calories and fat than we should have, so the best solution is a supplement. Be sure not to take more than 600 mg at a time, since the body can only absorb this much at once. One 600-mg chewable supplement twice a day would be ideal. Guest guest
Yes I get the aftertaste also. I think it's from the artificial sweeteners, and I also think I am a little more sensitive (taste- wise) than some others. I have used the chocolate and the chocolate mint Viactives. The chocolate was slightly worse than the choc mint (I think the mint helps a little). I was going to try a different flavor when these are gone. I also get the taste after chewable vitamins, some worse than others. The only thing that gets rid of it for me is brushing my teeth soon after. My teeth are really clean these days :-) You might just try to drink milk -- at least 2 glasses of skim or 1% milk per day, maybe 3. But you have to factor in those calories if you do that. I do think we need to get our calcium. I have learned to live with it, but I don't like it much. If you find a calcium source that doesn't have the aftertaste, I hope you will let us know. I know there have been times when I have skipped it because I just didn't want to experience that again. Good luck and keep us posted. Maybe some others have run into this and found a better supplement. But it states on the back, " Allergen Sensitive Indivduals: contains soy and trace amounts of sasein (milk derivative) So my question is...is this safe for him? What else is Aval? Guest guest
Pamie, In my knowledge, supplemental calcium is not always a good thing for ASD kids, so be careful when supplementing this, if you decide to use it, watch closely for adverse reactions/behaviors. I have never used supplemental calcium for my 5 yo boy, he's been on a restricted diet for 3 yrs now, his blood-serum calcium levels are within appropriate range. I suggest you give lots of green juice (or smoothies), kale, spinach, lettuce. Greens are incredibly high in calcium levels and taste delicious combined with some fruit. (This was our spinach-celery-pineapple juice week and he loves it). If tolerated, almond milk is a good source of calcium too. Good luck!
