Guest guest
I’ve only used Prednisone for pain and I’ve been off even that for over a year. I’m pretty well controlled on 12.5 mg Methotrexate weekly, 1 mg Folic Acid daily, Fosmax weekly, and Remicade 6 mg/kg every 8 weeks. I also take assorted vitamins and other supplements. When I had pericarditis my cardiologist had me take Ibuprofen at the maximum recommended amount for a week and also increase my Prednisone by 10 mg daily. He told me to wean off the Prednisone first and then off the Ibuprofen. I stayed with the Ibuprofen for perhaps six months till I started to get some stomach problems and then I quit and the stomach problems went away. I have never asked for or been prescribed any pain medications for my RA. Everyone is different and I hope you find something that works well for you. God bless. Just wanted to ask a quick question about what you take for pain. My Rheumy has me on Ibuprofen 800mg three times daily around the clock. And, Tylenol #3 for breakthrough pain three times a day as needed. I weaned myself down to ibuprofen just as needed, but my Rheumy said do not do this, stay on the ibuprofen constantly. Does your docs have you do the ibuprofen thing? I am concerned about long term liver damage and stomach ulcers from ibuprofen and don't want to be on it forever, but again, i am afraid of having the pain come back. I take the Tylenol #3's sparingly, but am also concerned that in the near future, these will not work for my breakthrough pain. Another thing I am concerned about is that my Rheumy is very conservative when it comes to pain medicine. Which I do appreciate, because since I am a nurse, i see alot of people get addicted to pain medications. Have any of you had to switch MD's because of not adequate pain control? Guest guest
At my worst, I have needed to be on daily narcotics, Percocet or Vicodin. My new Rheumy is extremely conservative with pain meds but I have a couple of other doctors who will be happy to write for me when I need it. I am pregnant now and have not taken any narcotics since I found out (early January). There has been just a couple of times where I needed it and suffered although now my OB has allowed me to use them if needed, he wrote me a Rx, for 4 of them only! I would find a doctor who is willing to write you Rxs for stronger pain meds. > > Hey guys, > I am having some thoughts I need to share...or as my family says, ramblings....... > Just wanted to ask a quick question about what you take for pain. Guest guest
Dear - I am going to tell you my experience as it relates to pain. I never ever do what the doctor tells me. Shame on me right? Wrong. Only we know our own pain and what we need or do not need. For example. I asked the doctor for 800mg tablets of ibuprofen and I get 600 mg tabs instead. I need to take 3 of the 600mg to control pain. If I take only two I can really feel the difference. NOW, if I am on the 800 mg tabs I need to only take 2 to control pain. I use darvocet sparingly at night to sleep but I rely on my ibuprofen during the day. I have to say that using two 600mg during the day works better than one 800mg so I stick with that. If you take one 800 in the am and one 800 in the pm, see how that works for you. If you get break through pain, maybe you can take 3 600mg tabs, two during the day and one at night. If you have a flare, there is no law that says you cant take another pill on occassion. I hope that helps you. I love rambling- dont you?? Hugs, and have a pain free day. Guest guest
I recently tried to switch from naproxen (aleve - double dose) - to tylenol and within 3 days I could barely move. I wanted to see if I could get off of it due to possible stomach issues (don't have any as yet as far as I know). If I miss a prednisone dose - I feel it within 6 hours Tylenol does nothing for me - only seems to help with headaches and sore throat tho. I haven't tried ibuprophen since this first started so I don't know if it would work for me now. I'm on methotrexate once per week and folic daily. I still have pain 24/7 but it is reduced. Guest guest
I think the ibuprofen is for more than just pain - it's also an anti-inflammatory. My rheumy says that keeping the inflammation down is very important and while the voltarin I take doesn't always conquer the pain (or even all the inflammation) my rheumy says it's crucial that I continue to take it. If the inflammation is prolonged then he adds other medications. So I'd talk to your rheumy about the ibuprofen and find out if s/he wants you take it for more than its pain killing abilities. All of the NSAIDs seem to have liver problems which is why I have a blood test every 6 weeks (and why I take milk thistle to try to alleviate some of those detrimental affects). Guest guest
Your rheumy is right. It's the inflammation itself that causes the deformities in the long run so you've got to keep it to a minimum. I've had all my mcp knuckles replaced and am looking at a correction this summer. Good luck! > > > > Hey guys, > > I am having some thoughts I need to share...or as my family says, > > ramblings....... > > Just wanted to ask a quick question about what you take for pain. Guest guest
For NSAIDS, my doc put me on Voltaren. I started on a lower dose, and when that wasn't working well enough she increased it to a higher dose. To prevent stomach problems from the NSAID, she put me on Nexium, which has worked very well. I only take the Nexium every other day.
