Guest guest
How were your metal levels tested? Not all is accurate. As far as 'natural' chelation, all chelators are going to pull metals, stir up yeast, require dosing according to their half-life and will *all* carry consequences if not used properly (and, for some, if used at all). The least invasive and most productive is oral chelation. DMSA has been used for decades and decades to chelate lead and mercury safely when used appropriately. ALA is a potent antioxidant that is made by the body (and in small amounts in food) which also chelates mercury from the brain. I am not sure what you mean by 'natural'. My guess is you mean not a prescription. My best advice, then, would be alpha lipoic acid (ALA). It is widely available, inexpensive, crosses the blood-brain-barrier. You would need to have no silver (mercury) fillings or no recent mercury exposure to start. The safest way to administer would be low doses (1/4 per lb of weight per dose) given every 3-4 hours for 72 hours. Then, take a minimum of a 72 hour break before doing it again. I started with TD-DMSA. Waste of time. I moved to oral DMSA and saw OK progress, but got the real progress when I combined DMSA with ALA. I have never bothered with things like BioRay, PCA-Rx, OSR, zeolites or other things that claim to chelate or clathrate. My son is moving his way off of the spectrum. He, also, never tested *high* for mercury, lead or other heavy metals on hair, urine, or blood tests. Why does your DAN! not want to start chelation? Most claim we need to heal the gut before chelating. That just isn't going to happen for the vast majority of our kids, and wastes precious time. My guess is you feel the urgency yourself. good luck with your decisions. My son is 4 and tested barely out of reference range for mercury (.0046 mcg). Arsenic and lead were also a bit high. Our Dan doesn't want to do chelation yet for him, but we really want to do something this summer (when it wont be affecting school) that can release those metals and toxins. Any suggestions? > Thanks! > Shiri >
Guest guest
Shiri, From what I've seen, alot of kids have positively responded to the Cutler methodology of chelation, which Pam just gave a brief overview of. You can Google his methodology and read some of the books he has written about the subject. Undertaking any form of treatment or not undertaking it is a major decision and every parent needs to educate him/herself as much as possible. Autism treatment is such new territory that most members of the medical community are far behind the curve. Even DANs can be very limited in how they plan treatment (My son's DAN is completely clueless about chelation). Wish you the best in making the best choices for your child. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, but I'm pretty new to this myself. thanks, Pamela H wrote: > > How were your metal levels tested? Guest guest
Pam, Thanks for the informative and comprehensive reply! My son tested for metals through a blood test from Genova Diagnostics. This was done a year ago from now,and at least a year AFTER we first began seeing symptoms of autism in DS, so I imagine that if it was still in the blood it must have been higher in tissue? What I meant by natural was not b/c of ease of getting over the counter. The first Dan I went to was willing to do chelation but wanted to do an IV challenge test, which, even from the little knowledge I have, I know is risky. What I meant was a way of removing metals and toxins that is not a chemical. I don't know enough about dmsa/dmps, but I would like to try things like detox through juicing or antioxidants (like ALA) or other natural cleansing methods that I've heard about like zeolites and such - although I know that they are controversal- before I do chelators. But from what I'm reading ALA is even stronger than Dmps? The Dan I'm seeing now is pretty conservative in his approach and won't do chelation until he's tried everything else or in extreme cases. My son is high-functioning and is responding well to the " milder " treatments like enzymes,probiotics,clo,mb12,glutathione etc, so I think he wants to continue with that and not " stir up the pot " and possibly kick up metals that have been lying dormant for over 2 years. But my son is still has so many issues. He just turned 4, and I'm beginning to feel like time is running out. If I don't do chelation soon, it might be too late for him. I don't want to look back and regret not doing everything I could. Guest guest
Hi Shiri, I will respectfully disagree with your DAN! doctor's opinion on chelation. Those metals that have been 'lying dormant' for 2 years are the problem. You need to get that out. Alpha Lipoic Acid is still a good choice. Starting now is great because you don't have those full days of school to work around with chelation schedules. I understand not wanting to rock the boat when you have a higher functioning child, but proper chelation should not give you regressions. Sorry you are dealing with this. I never like to see new people because I know that means just another child has been affected. But, I'm glad you are here to learn. Guest guest
Dana, Did you do DMSA first? Or ALA in conjunction with other chelators? How old was your child when you did it? Thanks! I did ALA alone. >>How old was your child when you did it? My kids were 2, 4, 5, and 7 when I started chelating them. I was in my 30s when I chelated myself.
