I had a course of acupuncture in the hope it would help my RA. The

therapist used deep massage prior to the needles going in and I

flared terribly, especially in the joints where she'd concentrated

the massage. She worked on mainly my hips, knees and feet, which were

the worst affected by the RA. I could barely walk for several days

after each session. Needless to say, I stopped having treatment after

6 sessions.

I have used massage therapy to help control my pain for years. For about 3

years, I couldn't have massage near my hips, or they would flare badly.

I just asked my therapist to skip the hips, and concentrate on the areas

where the massage would help, not hurt. For me, this is arms and shoulders

and neck, and legs and feet below the knees. I realized at one point it is

very important to not put my arms in certain positions, especially internal

rotation, that she might use for someone without arthritis. My experience

has been that massage therapists listen very well and adjust their treatment

according to my feedback. Any chiropractors I have seen just went ahead and

did what they wanted, assuming they knew more than I. That approach doesn't

work.

Now that I have had thee years of mino therapy, my hips hurt much less, and

generally massage around my hips is okay. I still know 2 trigger spots I

don't want the therapist to hit directly. I think there are bursa there,

they can be exquisitely painful, so we skip them. For someone to decide to

do deep tissue work on an inflamed bursa or tendon would be a very wrong

decision.

Sounds like a flare up to me. In one of those right now. :-(. I think if

it was the flu, your temp would be higher. Not sure because I haven't had

the flu in years. I do know it felt worst than a flare up though. Then

again, I was probably having a flare up while I had the flu. I'm lucky that

way......sigh

Hope you are feeling better soon to enjoy some nice spring weather.

Despite what many people think, stomach upset isn't a true flu symptom.

The 2 main hallmarks in diagnosing flu are very high fever and respiratory

distress (breathlessness, along with a hard, dry cough without the nasal

congestion

typical of a cold; nasal congestion sometimes occurs further into the

illness). Aches, pains and occasionally, nausea, during the flu are brought on

by

high body temps and coughing. In the absence of those 2 symptoms, flu is rarely

diagnosed.

On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis flares causes a mild elevation in

body temperature in some, along with that awful beat-up feeling. Often, added

pain can bring on nausea, as well. A stomach virus could also cause the same

symptoms. How you're feeling sounds miserable. It also sounds like exactly how

I feel when I'm flaring. I'd pay close attention to your temp and watch for

development of respiratory symptoms. If your temp goes up to 102 and stays

there, along with onset of a dry, hacking cough or any breathing difficulties,

you

should call your doctor before taking your injection. If you're really worried

or have other concerns, you should call your doctor, regardless. I have a

great RD who never has a problem when I call with these types of questions. He'd

rather err on the side of caution. I bet your doc would too : ) Hope you're

feeling better very soon!

Tess,

Since flares are so similar to flu symptoms, it's hard to know what is

going on. You should see your doctor so you know if you should take

the Humira. Hopefully by then you will be feeling better. I'm flaring

too for the first time in a very long time. We can be miserable

together. I hope you feel better.

, I do believe you are flaring! The flu like symtpoms you describe are exactly what I have when I am starting to flare. Unfortunately it took me a while to learn this and I would call my doctor after I was in so much pain I couldn't get out of bed. Now when the flu like symptoms come I call my rheumy first thing and she ups my prednisone which really helps. I don't always catch the symtpoms on time, but am learning. Everybody learns to recognize when a flare is coming in different ways. Mine are much like yours with the achiness and flu like symptoms and usually with an elevated temperature as well. Hope this helps. Best wishes, Hollypretty24355 <kfonseca@...> wrote: Hi all, My Rheumy thinks I am

I've only been diagnosed for 3 months. But the first and only time I had a flare, I had the exact same symptoms that you did. My Rheumy said it was a flare. I had a dr's appt with her during this time. 2 days later my knees were swollen and my knee cap went out of place. She told me to watch for these symptoms and that would mean I needed to call or come in for medicine. If you doctor can't recognize this, maybe you should see another doctor. No doctor or nurse should make you feel like your strange. You might ask about a Medrol Pack because

that is likely to help if your problem is inflammation. Sometimes it provides

just the boost required to get you over a flare. Also you might consider a

second opinion because you need a rheumatologist who will listen to you and

try to treat your symptoms. God bless.

Hi all,

My Rheumy thinks I am nuts, so I am now asking

I think what I am going through now (and have gone

feel hotter than

usual, and hurt.

My throat is sore and a bit burning, I feel like I

have a cold coming

on, and have flu-like symptoms. However,

even though I feel like I

have a cold coming on, I do not get one.

This has gone on for 3

days, never getting any worse. As I said

Does anyone ever flare like this? I am

Dear - Welcome to FLARE land. Yes you are having one. Feels like flu with joints on fire and achy everywhere. Try and get the average person to be in your body from one day to the next and find out why people get disabled from this disease. Are you on a biologic? I sure hope you are. You are not alone, I am a full time resident in Flare Central. Speaking of which my left hand looks like a mickey mouse hand, swollen and sausage like. Hugs, Deborah

Hi there ' Well I have never thought of it before and don't have a lot of reddness but I have noticed these things before several times , but never thought much of it I have been horse ( not sure of the proper spelling ) many times and have heard the R/A can cause that , but don't remember where I read it though so I never thought much about it it would last a couple of three days and clear up no sore thorat or cold . pretty24355 <kfonseca@...> wrote: Hi all, My Rheumy thinks I am nuts, so I am now asking those who actually suffer from RA the same question. You may also want to research Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I

have Fibro along with RA. It seems like Fibro hits so many people who are

chronically ill.

, I don’t know about that study

but I have heard that it can take up to a few months for a biologic to start

working so you may be better off to be patient. Of course, I have no way of

knowing how bad your pain is and how well you can function. God bless.

Re: Flare question

Thanks, Deborah.

I am currently in the TEAR study, so I may or may

not be on Enbrel. I

am considering leaving the study because I need to

find out what I am

on and get switched if it is not working.

Hi Harold,

I have been in the study for over a year, may or may not have been on

Enbrel all of that year, but part of it?. I am fortunate (if one could

call it that) that I had a knee replacement in 1/06, so my entire

deductible has been met for all of 06, including all drugs--including

biologics (I just confirmed this yesterday)--so leaving the study for

me will not be a hardship since it the study ends in 2/07 anyway.

The good thing about the study is the drugs are free. The bad thing is

you do not know what you are on and there is little, if any,

flexibility due to study parameters.

Hi ,

The same happened to me. I have had RA active symptoms for years,

but not formally diagnosed until 5/04 when the C-Reactive Protein

test was done and the antibody showed up. All other tests for RA are

all negative for me.

You are right that it is a crazy disease. I HATE it :)
