I just wanted to let everyone know my social security disability claim was finally approved. I know I'm not too sure how much I wanted it, but at least now I'm more ensured of an income than I was on long term disability. Plus, I'm getting at least 100 more a month than I thought I would. I'm still planning on going to college and doing whatever it takes to make this as temporary a situation as possible, but in the meantime it's all good. I should be able to move out of my parents home in the next few months. (I'm 49 years old and as much as I love my parents I miss my independence.)

Congratulations, I know from experience this has been a difficult struggle. I have been fighting for my SS for two years and had to move in with my sister and her family. in WIcat_lady20042003 <cat_lady20042003@...> wrote: I just wanted to let everyone know my social security disability claim was finally approved. Dear Susie- Dont forget that when you are low income on disability you can apply for subsidized housing. I live in an apartment that is subsidized with heat and hot water included and while its not the best of addresses and small, I pay only 30% of my SSDI. I also receive food assistance. There is fuel assistance also available. Believe me, after rent and utlities are paid, like electric and phone, and internet, I can barely afford food each month. Sometimes independence means everything. Good luck in your search and with college also. Remember, the system is in place to help you. On the other hand, if your parents are on a limited income, you can apply for both fuel and fuel assistance and continue to live there. I lived with my dad until he passed on and at first he was mortified at the thought of my getting food stamps and fuel assistance through welfare, that was until he saw how much he got in fuel assistance stipends each year and the food stamps that bought free groceries. I didnt pay anything in rent, but your parents can ask for it, and you can claim it just as you would a regular landlord. Just FYI. P.S. I had to move two states over to find housing, and if you are willing to do it, apply to other surrounding states. Yours, Deborah in Maine

Thanks, Lynn, for the info on SS Disability. I'm not at that point yet...just

looking into the future. I'm not familiar with the disability return to work in

my state. Naturally, I've never used it. The informatin you supplied is very

useful. Thanks, again

Just curious....has anyone applied for and received Social Security

Disability as a result of CML?

Yes, I have. I received it six months after I applied for Disability due to

diagnosis of CML and horrific side effects of Interferon/ARAC, back in 2001, I

believe. It takes huge amounts of paperwork to fill out, you need to get a

case worker, and get your doctor to sign a statement if required. I was

reading someone else's post, Jackie's I believe, who did the same thing I did.

It

takes six months to receive your first check, from the time you apply and are

accepted. I somehow mistakenly thought that I would receive " back pay "

from the day of diagnosis and was shocked when I was told no, the checks start

only after the six month waiting period.

I want to tell everyone that Social Security implemented a program to help

people like us, people with cancer, to try and get us back into the workforce

if we thought we could handle it, without penalizing our payments. It is

called " Ticket to Work " program. Some states in the US do not participate, but

Massachusetts did. When I received my certificate, I was told to call a case

worker to get " hired " by area companies and corporations that were participating

in this program. Not one company in my area had a position and I was pretty

upset because I had felt well enough to try and work a few days a week, and

was excited that this program would help us feel like we were getting back

into the maintstream of society. The companies were supposed to train you,

work

around your disabling side effects, and give you a job. But as I said, every

place I called said the positions were " filled " which could not have been

possible because my ticket was one of the first issued, as I was told by the

case worker, so I would have been in the front of the list to get a job.

My thought was that the companies took the money from Social Security but

did not employ anyone. So I seriously thought they " scammed " Social Security.

If anyone else has gotten this Ticket to Work, and did find a job, please let

me know. I'd like to find out if one person benefited from the program. -
