Any other ideas From: michele_in_california <talithamichele@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Low holesterol need advice Date: Monday, 13 December, 2010, 2:24 Â Can he eat bacon? It's my understanding that is one of those " unhealthy, high cholesterol foods " . We sometimes eat a lot of it around here. Bacon grease is one of the fats we tolerate fairly well. There are a lot of fats/oils we do very poorly with. We happen to currently be eating a lot of bacon, after not touching it for a few months. Good luck with this. If a food does not come from an animal (such as fruits or vegetables), then it does not have cholesterol. Foods with the highest amounts of cholesterol are eggs and liver. For example, an egg yolk has 213 mg of cholesterol. Other high cholesterol foods to avoid include: Whole-milk dairy products Butter Cream Ice cream Cream cheese Certain shellfish (such as shrimp) Organ meats (such as kidney and brain) Duck and goose (which have more cholesterol than chicken or turkey; the skin on these animals is high in cholesterol). -------- Please overlook the " foods to avoid " language. I felt it would probably be the easiest way to find a food list for you. Most folks are trying to lower cholesterol, not raise it. I eat a lot of butter. I used to make homemade sugar cookies in order to get butter into everyone (I think the recipe is on my health website). I also generously add butter to potatoes or slather it on breads that I eat. I used to eat a lot of liver but I am no longer severely anemic so I haven't had liver in quite some time. You also might check out the following links, which I haven't had time to check and I need to get ready for work now: http://www.everydayhealth.com/high-cholesterol-pictures/ten-high-cholesterol-foo\ ds-to-avoid.aspx http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol/CL00002 HTH. Thank you Pam From: Pamela H <phaselow@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Low holesterol need advice Date: Tuesday, 14 December, 2010, 13:07  How low is his total cholesterol? I've seen people talking about Sonic supplements when total cholesterol wasn't in my opinion low enough to do so. My son's was low for a few years (around 100) and is now a healthier 150. I do not know what we did to correct it because I only noticed the number was low several years after the fact. Nobody thought anything of it back in 2002-5 when it was testing so low. We had done some chelation during that time. Have you done that? Manganese deficiency has been associated with low cholesterol. My guess is your son is having problems MANUFACTURING cholesterol, so I'm not sure how supplementing it will help. That is just a guess. Does he have anxiety and/or diarrhea? Those are two possible symptoms of low cholesterol. Hyperthyroid is also linked to low cholesterol. How is the thyroid functioning? Liver function should be maximized and any issues of malabsorption need to be addressed. Again, these are things chelation can help. My total cholesterol hovered around 103-120 for most of my adult years. I always thought that was GOOD! I have a history of depression and anxiety that have gotten better in part possibly because I also somehow raised my total cholesterol to 150. I have chelated myself, too. And used a lot of fish oil. I don't know if that helped. I gave both my son and myself 1-2 grams of Nordic Naturals fish oil daily for almost 3 years. Guest guest
Thank you Pam I will do the natural way first From: Pamela H <phaselow@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Low holesterol need advice Date: Tuesday, 14 December, 2010, 20:10 Â I looked up the conversion and it puts your son's total cholesterol at about 134 (our US numbers) based on the 3.4 you provided. That is low, but not horrendous. Personally, I would have it tested again before I went ahead with a prescription. Physical stress can actually lower cholesterol, as can infection. Just a thought to repeat an abnormal test before intervention. The mineral I mentioned was manganese, not magnesium. With malabsorbtion of nutrients, you might not be able to help much with cholesterol until those issues are corrected. I hope you can find something that works for him. Cholesterol is manufactured by the liver (and intestines), and a normally functioning body should be able to produce almost all you need. Ask more questions about liver function and what you can use to help the liver function (milk thistle?). I don't know exactly how cholesterol is produced by the body, but perhaps looking further at that process might offer some clues on how to get the body to produce more cholesterol naturally.
