black walnut, msm. i have a theory that people who are susceptible to poison

ivy are deficient in sulfur. i used to get poison ivy terribly as a kid. a

few years ago i got it while camping in the redwoods. i started craving egg

yolks which are high in sulfur. also black walnut is high in sulfur which

seemed to help me fight it off alot faster. sulfur is a very important

nutrient for the skin.

Does anyone have a holistic approach to poison ivy? I have it on my

Hi Phil,

I think Vilik mentioned msm and I thought I would mention a story that might be

of interest. I have an older lady friend who has psoriasis and she read that

topical msm helped and wanted to try it and so I got her an inexpensive msm

lipsome lotion from NOW Foods and she tried it and it worked wonderfully. Her

right elbow went from having a large 4 inch flaming red area to looking totally

normal in one week.

I wonder if it would work for Poison Ivy? Or Oak?

Hi Robin,

There are alot of remedies out there, but I like to use a plantain/tea tree

soap to wash with and then use a salve with tea tree and plantain. Plantain

is a common weed that you can make an infusion from--oil or water. I

purchase tea tree eo. The soap is very effective in stopping the itch and

drying out the blisters. I make a basic olive, palm, coconut oil soap. For

part of the olive oil, I use plantain-infused olive oil. At trace, I add the

tea tree oil and dried, ground plantain leaves. Tea tree is not the mildest,

so be careful around the face with a salve.

I think Trina had a whole list of things to try, maybe she can re-send it!

Good luck, poison ivy is not fun.

Robin,

My husband has poison ivy as we speak. The only thing that has helped and

started to dry it is Tea Tree Oil. As soon as I had him put it on the

infected areas, it started to dry it.

If it's really bad there are shots the doctor can administer.

My aunt got a really bad case when the neighbors decided to get rid of theirs

by burning it. The oils can travel with the smoke.

Well, I've got a little, too. Jan seems to have avoided it, but I got

some when we were clearing up brush behind the house last weekend.

Anyway, it's not like the worst I had when I was about 12. Then it was

over about 80% of the body .. spread by cold water shower without much

soap at a boy scout camp.

It is interesting to see the continuing rumor that scratching spreads

it. The oil that causes the reaction is not contained in the blisters,

it causes the reaction by getting on the skin. Where the concentration

is less intense, it takes longer to develop, so it seems like it is

spreading.

Huggs to itchy . A bath with a little oat flour was what my

doctor suggesteed to relieve itching .. but that's so old it is folk

medicine.

Hi Lucie and All,

We have a farm with woods and all that goes with it, including poison ivy. I

like to use plantain and also tea tree. The plantain can be used in

different ways: tincture, oil infusion, water infusion. I like using a

tincture with poison ivy. The alcohol seems to help dry it up and help with

the itching. I also make a soap with plantain (infused oil) and tea tree.

And a salve with infused oils and tea tree. Jewel weed is also recommended

and if you have any around you may want to try that too. Seems like there is

something that I am forgetting, but can't bring it to mind right

now.......Good luck!

Hi Lucie

\You can try tea tree, neat, applied directly to the rash, takes the

itch right out. You'll still have the rash, but it won't itch so you

won't scratch it and make it worse.

I am sure you will get a response to this but I would not use any EO neat.

You should dilute in a carrier oil to be safe. When you apply to a rash you

are applying to open skin and this can be very irritating and make matters

worse. You also don't need that much EO to do the job.

Nothing under the sun helped my daughter - she fought it for years, and we tried

*everything*.... until I finally gave up, took her to the dermatologist, and

he told us to have her was with plain ole Dawn dishwashing liquid. Remember the

ad? " Dawn takes gease outta your way " ? Well, seems it does the same thing for

the oil of the poison ivy plant. Worked like a charm.

Dawn does seem to be used for a lot of things, doesn't it? I also wonder

exactly what it is. It seems I am always hearing of another use for it. I

am not sure but I think calling the soap we make lye soap is a misnomer as

there is no lye left in it by the time it is soap.

learned that if you take lard based lye soap, lather it well on your ivy area

lye soap or dawn?

I don't know which is more harsh but I do know that when the animal in an

oil spill are cleaned they use Dawn and I wash my dogs in it all the time.

I have never had any problem. I doubt that that a lard based soap is very

harsh at all.

Hello all,

Dawn is not a soap - its a syndet aka synthetic detergent. So is Ivory

soap, which was recommended to me by a dermatologist as being " the harshest

soap on the market "
