Guest guest
Hi. My son just turned 5 and has improved in his peer playing skills drastically over the past year. First, I purchased a social skills dvd from the Baby Bumblebee company. It models asking kids their name and coversations and playing together. Second, I enrolled him in a socialization class. The group in run by behavioral therapist w a kid to therapist ratio of 2:1. They sit and play with the kids and then gradually remove themselves and encourage kids to play together. On Thursday, my son actually built a lego house w another boy at preschool. Something that I thought I would never see happen. Good luck! -- Sent from my Palm Pixi On May 28, 2010 3:42 PM, DIANA & lt;dmniemes@... & gt; wrote: & nbsp; I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills. Guest guest
Are you seeing any parallel play or is it just solitary? At two, Im not sure how much real socializing with others you will see. When my son was in day care from 2-3, he would participate in circle time with the rest of the kids, but for outdoor play, he would play next to the others, but not necessarily with them. Same with playdates, lots of parallel play, but no real interaction. It wasnt until preschool that we saw more 1:1 interaction with his peers and its definately one of our IEP Goals. Both the preschools and Kindergarten use NT peers as part of his OT/Speech therapy and his tasks require him to engage and interact with his peers. My sons an only child, and I suspect it might be different for those with siblings. Karla > > I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills. Guest guest
He basically just ignores them and plays on his own. If they get too close to him he'll run away:/ Our son is an only child too so I don't know if this could be another reason. The Early Intervention visits from the Speech Therapist and Early Education teacher don't do much other than " guide " us with things to do with him. > > > > I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills. Guest guest
two is pretty young to be social. usually you see " parallel play " until closer to 3. Then kids learn to be social. nancy j From: DIANA <dmniemes@...> Subject: [ ] SOCIAL SKILLS??? Guest guest
My son can be considered an only child, his brother is 10 years older. In the beginning he used to play a little with his little baby brother, now the difference autism-age has built a barrier so huge that I don't see a way how to make them be closer. It is sad. Once my eldest son told me: mom, I waited so long for a little brother, and now that he is here, THIS had to happen to us??? It is not fair.... Breaks my heart. I see him doing some paralell play at his spec ed school too, but the interaction 1:1 is just not there. I believe it is one of the toughest issues in ASD. Guest guest
When my now 4 y/o daughter was 2, she was pretty shy and didn't want to be around others either. I have a friend who has 6 kids. I asked her (it was summer) if I could have her 2 youngest (ages 7 and 10) over in the mornings to play with my daughter. They did it once a week thru the summer and were really rough and tumble with her (picking her up a lot, in her face a lot). It really helped her to be less afraid of people. She still shies away but nowhere near to the point she used to (with such anxiety. > > > > I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills. Guest guest
My son did a social skills drama class that helped him a lot. We also used " Watch Me Learn " and " Teach to Talk " videos. Below is the class information for those that live near San in California. Hi Everyone - The San Children's Theater will be holding a Friends In Training (FIT) social skills play group session this summer. The class will meet during two weeks, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 21, 23, 24, 28, 30, and Thursday July 1 from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Room A at the Redwood Shores Library. We can enroll up to 8 children ages 6 - 9 years. There will be three teachers, Young, Frost and Cravalho. The fee is $295.00. For details about the play group, please visit www.friendsplaygroup.org. You are more than welcome to contact us with any questions. Attached is the sign-up flier. Here is a brief description of the class: FRIENDS IN TRAINING (FIT), is a theater based social skills program, designed for socially delayed children and those on the autism spectrum. The program is geared for children ages 6 - 9 and uses theater arts and drama activities all tailored to help children become better social thinkers. What makes the FIT program unique from others is the children are videotaped as they model their new social skills. At the end of each session, the children invite their parents to a " movie premier " where they see themselves participating in skits and games specifically written to enhance their social understanding. They will be given a take-home DVD that can help reinforce their social skills each time they watch it. Guest guest
Look into a program called RDI... it helped my son alot. He loves playing with other kids now, although it is for an hour or so then he needs a break. The program helped us learn to build a relationship with him and really helped his personality come out. > > > > > > I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills. Guest guest
My son is 2.5 and watches the Preschool Power series as well as Watch Me Learn (he watches Barney too). They show a lot of footage of kids playing together, which is good for visual learners. Guest guest
It's a great age to start building skills to get him there. We were part of a study group where " play " is taught. Found it very useful and taught us how to interact with our son and teaching him to " play " and have fun. Almost like floortime. You get on the level of your child and " join in " his play. You can start with parallel and build on that. i.e. if he is playing with a car, you can start with the car and have it roll over your arm / make funny noises. We got some interaction, eye contact and had fun playing > > I would like to know what everyone has used that has helped with social skills.
