Come to think of it, I have one white filling that was put in a front tooth. Got

it when I was nine. I am now 59, so it lasted a very long time. The rest(a lot

of them) are silver.

I am sure you trust your dentist and we all defend the ones we trust, but there

is no harm with confirming from a third party.

There is a difference between a filling - which can fall off, out, etc. and a

crown, and if you have a filling that should have been a crown, then that is

most likely going to crack and need a crown eventually. Then, there are also

fillings for young children for cavity prevention that sometime fall out or wear

down, but there is also the consideration for whether or not there are dental

caries under the filling causing an issue.

If these are regular composites, my DENTIST would be concerned if they needed to

be replaced every three years. Sure, you get them checked every time you go in,

but you don't replace them unless you have to... that is a lot of trauma to a

body that is healing. Maybe your dentist was giving you a worst case scenario? I

would call the ADA and ask them, because their literature states that they

should last at LEAST 5 and up to 15 years.

" Worn-Out Fillings

Some fillings can last for 15 years or longer. Others, however, will have to be

replaced in as little as five years. Your dentist can determine if your fillings

are worn enough that they need to be replaced. "

" Keeping Your Fillings

Although some fillings can last for many years, the average life of an amalgam

filling is about 12 years. Composite fillings may not last this long. "

As for mercury content:

" Dental Amalgam and Mercury

Dental amalgam fillings are created by mixing elemental mercury (between 43

percent and 54 percent) and an alloy powder composed mainly of silver, tin and

copper. "

Just to put this out there - I can charge up to $125/hr, but if I am paying my

assistant for a 20 hour week and she has nothing to do, taking a job at $25/hr

still makes me money because it is paying her. Anything that can be billed at a

rate more than the cost to perform the service is a profit, " minimal " or not.

Please do not take cheap shots at my character. I am done talking to you. (And

not because you are right; it is because you are rude.)

I never cease to be surprised by all the mental illness on this group, and

wonder if it has to do with all the mercury poisoning.

If you're going to claim that mercury amalgams are not 50% (approximately)

mercury, then please provide some evidence. Otherwise you do look like you just

won't admit to being wrong. Go over to the ADA website, and even they say, point

blank, that amalgam is half elemental liquid mercury and half alloy powder.

Of course not everyone mixes it perfectly, so the percentages may vary slightly,

but using that to argue that they are not half mercury in those instances looks

like pedantry.

There's no such thing as 3% mercury amalgam. If you are arguing there is, then

prove it. If not, be a big girl and admit you're wrong.

And fyi, facts are not facts because two people told you so. If any dentist told

you your mercury amalgams are 3% mercury, they're liars.

I moved in 93 and the new dentist told me I should have all my " white " fillings

removed and replaced with silver. Told me my white fillings weren't very good.

Still there but one. I told him I wasn't going to fix what wasn't broken.

Knowing what I know now, LUCK!

Just had my teeth cleaned a month ago. They hate that I won't do x-rays. I

won't let them do on my kids either. Years ago, I had a ton. I shudder at that

thought today.

We always had dental insurance but not needing work and cost, well it's cheaper

to pay cash for once a year cleaning. Boys have no issues thankfully. He's

mercury free, but....

fillings. WE go to the pediatric dentist every 6 months. On the last visit, they

told me they needed to replace a filling. I inquired as to why and was told,

" The white fillings generally need to be replaced every 2-3 years. " Not a rumor,

a fact the dentist told me (and they do not push silver fillings because we have

metal allergies.)

If you're saying that out of compassion and understanding, of the greater
