Guest guest
We had this same thing the summer of 2005 or 2006. At the time, we were traveling and on a supplement holiday. I cannot tell you what the cause was, but once we got home and restarted the supps it went away. He was 4 or 5 years old. One note, though: at this time he was in the middle of a then undiagnosed pinworm infestation. I seem to remember the tensing/clenching reducing with the restarting of vitamins, but I do wonder if parasites played a role. I wish I had paid more attention. I do have some memory of thinking B vitamins were helpful. I do not think this was seizure activity in our case. Not at all. It was frightening, though. It seemed to be when he was excited, kind of like when other kids would flap hands but instead he clenched fists, put arms out a little, clenched teeth and briefly 'shook'. Eyes would be wider. Weird. What are you giving for supplements? Pam > > My son often does a tensing thing where he clenches his teeth and tenses all over. Guest guest
I want to add I cut down my son's 5htp(too much serotonin building up I think)and he stopped doing this clenching/tensing.I had kept giving it thonking it was helping but after awhile I guess he built up a reserve and it was too much.I had posted about him wringing his hands and tensing up.It finally stopped after cutting 5 htp.I would defiantely check all the supps first of all. > > > > My son often does a tensing thing where he clenches his teeth and tenses all over. Guest guest
I also have a son who I think is having severe anxiety. He paces back and forth a lot and wants to get in the car and go somewhere about every 2 to 3 hours. He is 17, nonverbal and has severe headaches. If anyone has seen this before or has any insight or suggestions, I would appreciate it. Guest guest
Severe Anxiety is an adrenal fatigue problem. Consider giving them Adrenal cortex glandular and b vitamins. Guest guest
Years ago our pediatrician sent us to a child neurologist. He prescribed lexapro, an ssri antidepressant. After 2 years my son still had not stabilized and had become manic. It was awful and the withdrawal was worse. It took 4 years out of his life. The doctor's only answer was to go to neuroleptics, which I refused. He could give me no assurances that this medication would not backfire as well. Guest guest
Try a B-50 complex. The only B I see is B6. If possible, see if the B complex can have methylcobalamin for B12 and P-5-P for B6. Not always an easy find. The other supplement that really worked well for us during those early years is called Methyl-guard (Thorne Research). It is B6 (p5p), folate, mB12 and TMG. If you don't get any positives from DMG, go for TMG or maybe even consider MethylGuard. I am wracking my brain and I think that might have been the supplemnent I thought helped stopped those episodes; or greatly reduce them. I apologize for being such a poor historian! Some others keep such good notes. I haven't seen anything in several years. I think there is a possiblity that this is something that won't stick around, especially since you are chelating. pam > > We are taking several supplements.  We chelate for 3 days on and 11 off.  We have many supplements that I have not given him regularly but I do give them when I see an issue.  I have 5-HTP.  I have given it to him a few times.  I didn't see any difference in him.  I will give it again for a few days and take note of whether he has tensing episodes.  It does seem to be an emotional/stress related issue.  I also have some black walnut hull for parasites.  I will try them separately.  Does anyone know how long it takes to kill parasites with black walnut hull?I am convinced that my little guy has many issues.  I need to begin eliminating them one at a time instead of trying to do all of them at once.  I always make sure he gets vit. D3, vit. E, Vit C.  I just started him on DMG this week.  It is high in B6.  I give him zinc and selenium for minerals. Thanks again,Margaret > > > > >
Guest guest
I can't speak for your son, I reacted big time to Lexapro & all SSRI's. I only lasted a few days. They made my anxiety go through the roof. Some caused a feeling of pressure in my head. . The strong ones like klonopin but after a few years I reacted to it & had to quit. I didn't like Xannax from day 1. Had a reaction & had to quit that too. I've had to stick with an old fashion low dose benzo, but not proud of it. Most won't prescribe the older meds. I don't know, but think they get perks for the new & improved. A trusted doc. told me Imipramine causes an irregluar heartbeat, over time, had to quit that too. With more bio-med & chelation maybe I can quit the 1 I'm taking.  If you can I'd stick with natural ways. 5-HTP worked but couddn't take it b/c caused diarrhea. L-trytophan caused the pressure in my head though. My son couldn't take it either. We used it for my son for a year but caused aggression in the long run. He's showing some anxiety approaching puberty at 11. GABA has worked the best for him, no meds yet. Guest guest
I was having panic attacks and migraines after my son was diagnosed. I had been given a xanax Rx, but it made me unable to stay awake and I didn't care what happened - at all, which isn't good either. When the meds wore off, the anxiety came back, even stronger it seemed, for the rest it had, lying in wait. I prefer not to use Rx meds, anyway so I ditched them and started with acupuncture, meditation, magnesium and 5HTP the 5HTP and acupuncture worked immediately. I rarely get panic attacks anymore. For the nonverbal child - sounds like he may need sensory input (need to move), visual input (things rushing by), a distraction from pain/worry. Headaches here need massage of neck, magnesium, C and B vits. And always, always avoidance of MSG and derivatives and avoidance of artificial sweeteners. > > > > > > I also have a son who I think is having severe anxiety. Guest guest
He has a communication device, which he hates, and speaks in 2 or 3 word phrases when he is desperate. What are these therapies? How expensive are they? What is the track record for improvement? He was in OT and speech for about 7 years and made minimal progress for maximum expense. I have considered the possibility that the msg in kfc is getting to him after all these years, since they always occur about the same time of day(about 4 hours after he eats lunch where he has 3 kfc strips). He refuses to eat any other kind. We have tried everything. This is the only meat he ever eats. Other than this he eats pears, oatmeal, gfcf french toast and hotdogs/w ketchup from a local sandwich shop. He also has severe nasal allergies and a tendency to sinus infections. I will research your therapies. I have heard of them on this board, but haven't looked into them. Truth is this. In the early years the things we tried almost bankrupted us and my husband is very careful about putting out thousands on something unless it has a good track record. ________________________________ From: Shepard Salzer <_Shepard@...> autism treatment Sent: Mon, February 15, 2010 6:15:26 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Tensing  Does he have some other form of communication (sign language, PECS, communication device)? Guest guest
The communication device is a dynavox Vmax. If anything, it is too complicated for him. It was suggested by the speech therapist. She thought it would be the bridge between the words he knew(at least a couple of hundred) and communicating with them. No he only eats the things listed. Occasionally he will eat a scrambled egg with organic ketchup. Or a orange sherbet popsicle or drink a sundrop or coke. He will eat nothing that looks like nuts, nut butter, or beans. His gag reflex is extreme. He gags just looking at food. I have another son in college who is a vegan, but we are from a southern background of meat and potatoes.  Thanks for explaining about these therapies.  D. Guest guest
How many items per page on the DynaVox? It's one that can be made less complicated in some ways. S S Re: Tensing Posted by: " drissia wright " ritzywright@... ritzywright Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:56 pm (PST) The communication device is a dynavox Vmax. D. ------------------------------------------------------------ Want to lose weight? Click here for diet help and solutions. Guest guest
It all depends on the situation and severity of the problem. Nobody should totally refuse meds under all circumstances, but I don't agree it is a first line of defense. Guest guest
Drissia,I took my son to a CST for a while. Â It was covered by insurance. Â You may find one who will take insurance if you look around. Â I thought it helped my son but my husband said that he didn't see any difference and didn't like the doc. Â This is why we stopped going.Margaret

Guest guest
My son had self injurious behaviors. After he took Lexapro, he was opening the car door trying to jump into traffic. If he wanted to stop someplace and I went by, he would undo his seatbelt, grab my hair, and try to pull me over the seat, almost causing me to have a wreck. He was reduces to a whimpering wreck and eventually the sounds he was making sounded more like a puppy whining or a bird chirping.  The doctor just couldn't understand. His stance was if this didn't work, let's try Abilify. When I researched it, I found that it could go very wrong. There was an issue with deterioration of the retina and a tendency to form diabetes. We are from a family of diabetes and heart disease. All I could think was he may end up half blind with diabetes and still have the original problems with Autism, or worse. So I refused. I found out later that some neuroleptics can actually cause further brain damage. I had run a family care home where the people had been on antipsychotics and I knew the damage that could be done long term. I wasn't willing to take the risk until I had tried other things. Meds have a tendency to work opposite for him than they do others. I know kids that these have worked for and kids who have been turned into zombies. I told the doctor I would not wait until we were looking at institutionalization to try drugs. We haven't reached that place yet. He has improved over the years more than I can explain, but still has so many sensory issues that control his life and ultimately ours. Thanks again for all of your input. I appreciate it. D.
