Guest guest
There is a really good book written by Dr.Batmenanghelidj, M.D. " Your Body s Many Cries for Water...You Are Not Sick You are Thirsty! Do Not Treat Thirst With Medications! " He talks a lot about the importance of salt and water for your health and also talks about the negative aspects of table salt...I had keyed in some excerpts for my dad (my scanner was broke) because he had some health issues related to lack of natural salt and he wasn't drinking water through out the day. I am copying and pasting those excerpts below...Some of this might be helpful to you....this part doesn't really really go into the table salt, but it is a fantastic book. This doctor was the one that had to treat the hostages in Iran many years ago without using medication and he found that water and salt were what was needed in so many situations. He says our doctors have it all wrong with the low or no salt diet. Here's the excerpts I keyed in. " Renin Angiotensin System (RA)is recognized to be strongly active in Kidneys. This system is activated when fluid volume of the body is diminished. (One of many reasons to drink plenty of water throughout the day) It is activated to retain water and to do so it promotes the absorption of more salt. In either way, water or sodium depletion of the body then RA system becomes very active. Until water and sodium content of the body reaches a preset level, the RA system brings about a tightening of the capillary bed and vascular system. It is designed to do this so that there is no slack and empty space in the circulatory system. This tightening can reach such a level that it becomes measurable and we call it hypertension. The reason the tightening of these vessels occurs during stress is simple to understand...When there is stress some of the available water is used for breakdown of stored materials such as proteins, starch and fat. To compensate for the lost water and to put the system into a squeeze, The Renin-Angio. System will also coordinated work with vasopressin and other hormones. The kidneys are the main site of (RA) system activity. The kidneys are responsible for urine production and the excretion of excess hydrogen, potassium and sodium and waste materials....All of these functions have to be maintained proportionate to the sufficient availability of water to be used to make urine(One of many reasons to drink plenty of water throughout the day) . It is true kidneys are able to concentrate urine.. however this availability is not to be used to extreme as it will eventually produce kidney damage. We have not in the past recognized the significance of the vascular tightening as an indicator of body's fluid loss. Now insufficient fluid balance in the body may have to be considered as the primary factor in some cases of renal damage....Once the RA system is turned totally on it continues expanding pace until a natural switching system could turn it off. The components of the natural OFF switch are:WATER and some salt...in that order...until the measurable vascular tightening (blood pressure) indicates a normal range. While the effects of caffeine drinks may be desirable, constant substituting caffeine drinks for water will deprive the body of the formation of hydroelectric energy. Excess caffeine intake will eventually exhaust the heart muscle because of its over-stimulation. Recently in some experimental models it has been shown that caffeine inhibits a most important enzyme system-(PDE) phosphodiesterase) that is involved in the process of learning and memory development. In reported experiments caffeine impaired vision and memory components of the learning ability in the species involved in this experiment. You must now realize why people with Alzheimer and children with a learning disability should not drink anything other than water. Definitely no caffeine-containing beverages should be consumed... Water by itself is the best natural diuretic. If persons who have hypertension and produce adequate urine increase their water intake they will not require any other diuretics. A consistent gradual increase of water is ideal.. Salt Free Diet is Utterly Stupid Salt is a most essential ingredient of the body. In their order of importance, oxygen water, salt, and potassium rank as the primary elements for the survival of the human body. ...about 27% of the salt content in the body is stored in the bones in the form of crystals. It is said that salt crystals are naturally used to make bones hard...thus salt deficiency in the body could be responsible for the development of osteoporosis. Salt will be taken out of the bones to maintain normal levels in the blood. Low salt intake will contribute to a build up of acidity in some cells. High acidity in the cell can damage the DNA structure of and be the initiating mechanism for cancer formation in some cells. Experiments have shown that quite a number of cancer patients show low salt in their body. The precaution to keep in mind is loss of salt from the body when water intake is increased and salt is not. After drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day you should think of adding some salt in your diet. Cramps in unexercised muscles often means a shortage of salt in the body. Also, feeling dizzy or faint might be indicators of salt and water shortage in the body. If such occasions arise, you should also begin to increase your vitamin and mineral intake--particularly if you are dieting to lose wight or do not eat properly, including vegetable and fruits for their water soluble vitamin and mineral content. I have developed a rule of thumb for daily salt intake. For every ten glasses of water, (about 2 quarts) one should add about half a teaspoon of unrefined salt per day...this is of course if your kidneys are producing urine well..otherwise swelling would occur... In contrast, Celtic sea salt is about 84% sodium chloride and the other 16% is a mix of 80-some-odd micronutrients found naturally in sea water. Since life on the planet supposedly originated in the sea, it makes sense to me that the chemical mix found there would be more life-enhancing/life-supporting than other forms of salt. > > Is there something I could read on the topic? > > A couple of things I found real quick: > http://www.celticseasalt.com/PDF/CSSAnalysis-Jan2007.pdf > > http://curezone.com/foods/saltcure.asp > > I have read some other things but I have no idea if I kept the links and I don't have time to search more right now. One piece talked about a study where they compared the impact of sea salt vs. table salt on animals. As a control, they had another group of animals that were not fed anything at all -- were simply starved. They found that the animals which were starved died slower than the animals fed table salt as part of their diet. Their conclusion: table salt is actually " poisonous " and kills, whereas good quality sea salt supports and improves health. I have no idea how scientific that study was or how reliable the source was. But it's a story that really struck me. These days, my sons and I refer to table salt as " industrial salt because we only use it for " industrial " purposes like scrubbing mold off the sink. We think it pretty much tastes like poison. > > HTH. > > Michele > http://www.healthgazelle.com > http://www.kidslikemine.com > http://www.solanorail.com >

Guest guest
Hey Joe! You are right. Actually I am reading that the amount of water needed for optimal health is to take your body weight divide it in half and that is how much you should drink in ounces. So a 150 lb person should drink 75 ounces. Unfortunately, lots of folks are not doing that or like you say they are drinking other things that do not qualify as water. But I hope gradually over time more folks will make this a life habit for them and their kids. -- [ ] Re: Really need your help--salt > > There is a really good book written by Dr.Batmenanghelidj, M.D. " Your Body > s Many Cries for Water...You Are Not Sick You are Thirsty!
