Subject: [ ] Organic coconut milk - not in cans

If you use coconut milk - where do you get yours? I need organic, unsweetened

coconut milk but the one that our local stores carry is all in metal cans... I

am hoping to find one in cartons.

It is for our 6 months old special formula so I am a bit picky :o)

Thank you

I have found it frozen in the local asian grocery store, and also powdered,

which I use. I stopped using the so delicious, sold at whole foods because it

has vit d added, which I believe creates the risk of l-form bacteria issues.

the only danger with some of the foreign coconut milk or powder is the addition

of casein as an additive. have to read the label carefully.

We use So Delicious brand organic unsweetened coconut milk from the carton.

When I lived in Va we bought it from Kroger. But where I live now I have seen

it at Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and Bloom markets. Check out the website.

I wouldn't recommend any of the brands in stores (especially for a baby), like

So Delicious, because they contain lots of additives, including carrageenan and

as you probably already know,t he cans contain BPA. We order online from

Tropical Traditions which has pure coconut cream concentrate in glass jars, you

mix it with water (whatever concentration you would prefer). We LOVE the taste

and will never go back to cans or boxed products with preservatives! I don't

understand the need for preservatives, honestly, the stuff is naturally

antimicrobial, it's probably the other additives that require them. Anyway,

check out tropical traditions online. They often have buy 1 get 1 free, that is

when I buy enough to last a long time, until the next deal comes along.

We avoid gluten and casein, here is info right from the site

How is Coconut Cream ConcentrateTM different from canned coconut milks and

creams?

Commercial coconut milks and creams are generally sold in cans, or sometimes

boxes and tetra packs. The main ingredient in these products is water. If the

fat content is 17%, it is called " coconut milk. " If the fat content is 24%, it

is called " coconut cream. " But most of what you are purchasing is water. Coconut

Cream Concentrate, on the other hand, has NO water, and is pure coconut. Unlike

the commercial varieties, it also contains ALL the fiber of the coconut. Pure,

dried coconut contains more fiber per gram than even oat bran! This fiber has

been stripped out of commercial coconut milks and coconut creams. Also, almost

all commercial coconut milks and creams have additives to prevent the water from

separating from the coconut oil, and also have sulfites added to keep it white

longer. Sometimes these additives are so small, that the FDA does not require

them to list them on their labels as ingredients. Coconut Cream Concentrate,

however, contains NO additives and NO preservatives at all: it is 100% natural

coconut made from certified organic Philippine coconuts grown without pesticides

or fertilizers. Coconut Cream Concentrate comes packaged in 1 pint or 1 quart

glass jars.

Me, three.

I'm trying the coconut peanut butter, too. I just sorta, kinda convinced my

husband that coconut oil was actually a healthy fat. He was stuck on that

initial research done years ago that said coconut oil raised cholesterol. When

I told him/showed him that the research was done using hydrogenated coconut

oil... he changed his tune (somewhat. he doesn't believe much in biomed so he

takes what I say with a grain of salt).

Thanks again for this link. I ordered a ton of different things, including that

fermented papaya. I'm going to see if it works as a digestive aide.

Good job Pam! Coconut oil is fabulous, I've been using it for years, never have

trouble with illnesses beyond a cold here and there, my weight is the same as

when I was in high school, I don't have mood swings like I used to, among many

other things...now granted, it's not ALL the coconut oil, but I do attribute a

lot of it to this initial and consistent change in my diet. Thanks also for

reminding me that you can reference your referral at Tropical Traditions, I am

going to post that next...

I just tried to order more and didn't get any error screens. I'm guessing it

was just a fluke on your end. This is a legit brand; sold on Amazon.com and the

link seems to be on several other health-based websites.

I get young coconuts from a local Asian store. I poke a few holes and drain the

juice (much more than in a regular coconut). I make coconut kefir with it.

(with water kefir grains).

I recently bought a coconut for the first time ever. It was from a regular

grocery store (Kroger's). It was HORRIBLE. It tasted like kerosene more than

like a coconut. I brought it back and the grocer gave me another one free. It

was just the same! I wondered if they were very old. The grocer assured me

there was a good turn-over with them. He said he occasionally gets in the young

ones, but not regularly. I live in SE Ohio, hours away from the nearest Asian

market. I know what coconut is supposed to taste like. What gives with those

tasting awful? Is that how they taste when they're old or do just

cracked-opened ones taste kerosene-like?
