Little or no speech until 6-7 yrs. At 14 he is chatterbox. Vitamin B-12 w Folinic from Kirkmans elicited full sentences with a week at about 7yrs. Probably the most interesting thing his language has taught us is that he recalls MORE THAN US about his childhood. When and where we went, Teachers names, schools etc. Very incredible revelations that he was taking in 110%, but giving out 0%. GFCF was our first step. Guest guest
Exactly true of my son. knew everything ..from when he had no speech and we thought he was lost. The b's are very bioavalable in goat raw milk and we have the MTHFR mutation in our family so I think we are on to somethings here! Guest guest
My son regained speech with the gf/cf/sf diet. the most significant gain was seen after removing soy protein. For days after we did this, he said his first sentence! Every experience is unique. One thing that helped was that at age three, he came down with his first bout of pneumonia. (he has had this eight times since regression). Anyway, the first time came on very quickly. He had a tiny cough at four in the afternoon, and by two in the morning he was in the emergency room diagnosed with a significant pneumonia n the left lung. He was treated IM with a broad spectrum antibiotic for two days and then followed up with ten days of oral omnicef. On the fourth day of treatment, he sat up and said all the words he had known before regression! I did some research and found a study using vancomycin in children with autism. In the study, all children receiving the vancomycin made progress! This blew me away. but then the study stated that once the children were taken off the vancomycin they regressed to baseline. When I read this, I literally cried. It was like in the story, " Flowers for Algernon. " Charlie gains but then loses everything. Our son did regress again after going of the antibiotics; however, he did not regress to baseline. He was able to still say some one syllable words/utterances, and babbling and echolalia increased. I worked with him and just kept doing biomed. We weren't able to chelate until 2006 due to his neutrophil count, so we did diet, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. the most important amino acid for my son has been Acetyl-L-Carnitine. They did some amazing studies on this amino acid at Berkley and then added Alpha-Lipoic-Acid and found even more amazing results in mice : when giving ALC to very old mice -- over time the old mice began to act like middle age mice. Then when they added ALA to the mix, the report stated that the results were tantamount to the old mice performing the Macarena! In other words, they acted even younger. The study hypothesized that these two things in combination had the propensity to repair cells at the mitochondrial level. I know that both of these have been used by many to help children with autism. I know ALC has helped my son. Don't believe anyone who tells you your child will " never... " We were told our son would never talk meaningfully again. We have short conversations now. For my son, receptive language came back first. Then expressive language, and finally a year ago at age nine, reciprocal language began to emerge. For us, the use of the broad spectrum antibiotic let us know that our son COULD talk, and that there was some biomedical process going on that was interfering with the ability --most probably something bacterial in nature, so we continued with biomed. Later, chelation also brought improvement, as well.
Guest guest
Can I ask whichbroad specturm antibitoic you used that helped your son? Does he have a problem with clostridia? My daughter has bad receptive language and we were toldto use L'Acetyl Carnitine by our DAN but it makes her hyperactive. Did you notice hyperactivity with the LAC and if so, did it disappear over time?  Thank you  --- Στις ΠαÏ., 16/07/10, ο/η Haven DeLay <hdelay@...> ÎγÏαψε: Από: Haven DeLay <hdelay@...> ΘÎμα: Re: [ ] Re: speech after age 5 Î Ïος: ΗμεÏομηνία: ΠαÏασκευή, 16 ΙοÏλιος 2010, 5:02  My son regained speech with the gf/cf/sf diet. the most significant gain was seen after removing soy protein. Guest guest
I know I take ALC for energy. Talk with your child's doctor as there may be another amino acid to add or something else. I believe ALC is vital to helping our children. It is one of the few amino acids that has been shown to repair damaged cells inside at the mitochondrial level (a study out of Berkley). Research the Reader's Digest Archives to find the article. I am hoping the hyperactivity is due to something else. The antibiotic my son was put on was Rocephan IM for two days (they gave two shots, one in each leg for two days), and then he was on oral Omnicef for ten days following. However, the research shows that children with autism often improve when put on Vancomycin IM. See if your child's doctor would be amenable to trying this. Keep in mind the research shows the children regressed to baseline after being taken of the Vancomycin. but in our son's case, he didn't regress all the way to baseline and we built on the speech he retained. My son has always been one who gets better when on antibiotics, but he has an immune dysfunction and has had to be on them a lot (often). It has its downside, so it is like a roller coaster. Another thing you might want to consider is to feed your child young coconut Kefir. Go to Body Ecology diet website to learn how to make it. I think his could help your child a lot. I haven't tried it yet, but intend to soon. It has helped a lot of kids. My son regained speech slowly. His receptive speech (giving one command at a time) was never a real problem. By age five, he had some expressive speech. He could finally tell me where he hurt, what he wanted to eat when given two choices. Reciprocal speech did not really emerge until age nine (I think). Hope this helps. For the hyper activity, have you considered L-theanine? Ask your doctor about it. There is a spray. I carry it with me. It is root beer flavored and he will spray it in his mouth. It seems to help.
Guest guest
your son gained reciprocal speech at age 9, is his language development normal for his age now? I am asking because based on what you are describing about your son he seems similar to mine (he is 6 now)thank you!
