Guest guest
Researchers Find Medical Clinical Trial Fraud and Bias Is Common in the U.S. Medical fraud is common in the U.S. medical system. (2,3,etc.) It appears that most clinical trial studies may be fraudulent, or at least not scientifically valid. A Univ. of California study in 2010 found that 92% of clinical trial studies had no description of the contents of the placebo used for the study. (1) There is no such thing as a biologically inert pill, and it is commonly known how to choose a common substance that has adverse effects on most conditions being considered in trials. Sugar for example has known adverse effects on diabetes patients and a large portion of the population. Similarly, ingredients containing lactose from milk products or gluten from grains or fructose from fruit have adverse effects on significant portions of the population. Likewise ingredients used as carriers or additions to treatment substance can be chosen for beneficial effects on a type of condition. Examples are olive oil or fish oil or which are known to have beneficial effects on several conditions and magnesium or calcium which have been used as buffers in some treatment formulations, yet also have known beneficial effects on many types of conditions including cardiovascular conditions, spasms, seizures, bones, etc. It is known for example that a clinical trial used to claim that aspirin is beneficial for cardiovascular conditions used magnesium as a buffer, although magnesium is documented in the medical literature to be beneficial to the conditions in question. How does one know what caused the benefit seen? Since Pharmaceutical companies pay for most research studies published and its known that they choose researchers likely to find positive findings for their treatment, there is a strong economic incentive to bias the study. Many studies and inquiries on drug safety have documented the common bias in such studies, and found major differences in the number of studies with favorable results paid for by Pharmaceuticals versus independent researchers. Inquiries by government agencies and others have also found fraud and bias to be relatively common when investigating drugs found to have adverse effects on a significant portion of the population taking the drug, resulting in recalls. An example is Dr. Reuben, Researcher for Pfizer, Merck who admits to faking dozens of research clinical trials over a 13 year period. (3-8) This highly-respected clinical trial researcher faked at least twenty-one clinical trials for Big Pharma over a period of 13 years. His fraudulent clinical trials are still being cited to sell prescription medications! Some of the major drugs that have been approved based on his fake studies include Celebrex, Bextra and Vioxx. According to Natural Times researchers(3): “Dr. Reuben's actions really aren't that extraordinary. Drug companies bribe researchers and doctors as a routine matter. Medical journals routinely publish false, fraudulent studies. Some of Dr. Reuben’s studies were published without validation by some of the top medical journals, which have now had to retract the articles. FDA panel members regularly rely on falsified research in making their drug approval decisions, and the mainstream media regularly quotes falsified research in reporting the news.†These claims have been essentially verified and disclosed by an article and books by a past editor of New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marcia Angell(2).
