I do and currently use a light box for 30 minutes when I wake up. It has

been really helpful. I have been doing this for about 5 months now.

Hopefully soon we are going to try some light therapy light bulbs and se if

that helps this winter.

Does anyone (LP or AP) suffer from SAD? And have you tried the

recommended treatment which is " light therapy " ?

Hello Deborah

My response is a little aside of your question, for I

know nothing of brain wave patterns associated with

Seasonal Affective Disorder. About five years age I

did see papers of research coming out of Canada that

found the use of Full Spectrum lighting very

beneficial for this problem. The paper had referered

to a community that had put this lighting throughout

schools and other public buildings, and couraged

householders to do the same.

I live in Newcastle (Australia) where we don't have

this problem because we have LOTS of sunlight all year

round. (This disorder, I believe, is associated with

periods of low levels of sunlight, at least one of the

associated causses)

It is about five or six years since I had the paper -

I may still have it if I search!

And forgive me if this is all 'old hat' to you. When I

lived in the USA (Washington, DC) I was surprised that

people just didn't know about this.

Please contact me if I can be of any further

assistance.

Warmly,

Carmel Ashton

I know very little about SAD. In this months Scientific American MIND

there is an article. They use of special 10,000 lux light and should be

used in the early morning for the greatest effect. I know of one person

that uses the light and advises she does get relief.

To compare a single GE " reveal " (gives a white light) 60 watts only has

630 lumens.

In his book " Getting started with Neurofeedback " Demos he

suggest, page 201 and 205, L & S also AVS . Advises seasonal affect

disorder (SAD) may be lessened with 20-Hz entrainment and he referenced

to Berg and Siever 1999.

Hi Tommy,

I am *guessing that it could possibly help since LDN is

thought to balance hormones

and affect the pituitary hypothalamic access. But I have not

heard anyone comment

on it either way. SAD, if I am not mistaken, has a lot to do

with Serotonin levels. Light

therapy is suppose to increase levels by mimicking sunlight.

Specialized full spectrum light boxes are used to treat it.

When I lived in Seattle

one of the light shops was actually set up as a ppo to the

insurance companies they

sold so many of them to people whose insurance covered them.

They were 40 watt

full spectrum florescent tubes that were pushed to take 80

watts of electricity. We

used full spec lights in our kitchen -- the days are really

short up there in the winter.
