When I first brought this subject up last week I wanted some facts on the

subject, I would never even think about vaccinating for this disease. But

the age level that it does attack at is at a time when children don't want to

listen to you, have a low immunity rate due to the late nights, worrying

about grades, drinking, poor eating habits( all this if they are living at

college). There have been some wonderful answers, of course in 4 years when

my first goes to college I will remind of this disease, and how to keep your

body in top shape. The jist of it is I didn't immunize all five of my

children to have a killer come down the road such as mennigitis and me not

being fully armed to protect my children from it. Thanks for all the

answers. Theresa

thanks for this and all you send out

i myself would have gave melissa the vaccine if it was available

before she came down with the menigitis this scared me to death

when we finally found out she had it also the days before we knew

all i can think is she caught it between school or the hospital my sister in

law was at

cause we went to see her a week before we found out

and all who read this please understand melissa never broke out with a rash

nor did she have a stiff neck or a temp all she had was a severe headache

that came and went and light hurt her eyes i took her to the ER 4 times 3

times they said all it was was a bad miagraine take her home and gave me

tylenol DUH

i was called from the school to get there ASAP melissa was curled in a ball

and complained of a headache and light hurts

by the time i got to her she was lathargic she didnt know me she couldnt

open her eyes i drove this child straight to the hospital and they didnt see

any symtoms of menigitis they did a cat scan MRI blood tests xrays but 1

elderly doctor said theres 1 more test we are going to do

they did the spinal tap and that showed she had menigitis a relief ? yes

but what happens now i was worried scared my hubby turned white as a sheet

we knew there was a outbreak the doctor said we will give her a strong

antibotic

and watch her but what amazed the doctors was after the spinal tap was

melissa was UP talking and wanting her mom and dad talking lololol

the only side effects she had after that was she has headaches the doctor

said this may go away one day but due to the swelling and fluid build up

this was understood

god was watching over this child

Robbin,

I bet that was a terrifying experience for your family. I agree with you...

God was definitely watching over her! (and still is I'm sure) =)

There are two vaccines out there, one created in the 1970s and one released in about 2005. The last is supposed to give better coverage but it has also been associated with some scary side effects-namely Guillan Barre Disease. This disease scares the heck out of me truthfully. We chose not to have the vaccine. I will not be having my 18 year old so called healthy child get it either. I just don't believe it is worth the risk for my children, but it is a personal choice. We are not having the new vaccine either, the one for HPV. My daughter is negative titer for chicken pox so we are watchful for that one too. She will not have the vaccine for that one either. My advice is to do your research and talk with your doctor, some are pro-vaccines, others are not. e, mom to "joe" 20 poly+

Hi ,

I have been thinking about you lately. Lots of kids from our church

have been leaving and going off to college. Some moms handle it with

ease, but most have a bit of trepidation seeing their babies leave

the nest for the first time.

Kind of reminds me a bit as to how it felt when they left for their

first day of kindergarten. Such a milestone in their life.

I hope everthing goes wonderful for Rob and that he has a exciting

and fullfilling first year!

I have heard that the meningitis vaccine has mercury in it which can worsen

symptoms but I don't know that for a fact. That is just what I have heard.

he couldn't put them on all day, though he tried. He has been on medicine for

about 3.5 weeks now (5-10 mg of prozac) and we were just starting to see some

real improvement. Has anyone ever heard that this vaccine exacerbates OCD

symptoms? Once again, it's probably just the waxing and waning of the illness.

But I thought we were seeing some progress.

The ped knows of his ocd and I even asked her if the vaccine would have an

effect on him or the meds he is on, and she said no (and looked at me like I had

3 heads).

Any info/experiences you could share would be helpful.

thx.

Thanks . Both the ped and psych said there is no correlation - but I

should have gone with my instincts and refused to have him get the vaccine at

this time. Sometimes we, as parents, know more than they do. angela:)

I do know for a fact that the flu shot does contain mercury (thimeserol) as a

preserving unit. Most vaccines are not supposed to have this anymore, but the

flu shot certainly does. If your son had increase of symptoms with meningitis,

I would skip the flu shot!

My daughter went to college without it. Just put in an exemption.

I actually sent them the one she had in high school.

My kids had all of their college vaccines waived because of our family history.

My typical daughter is heading to college in the fall. Our state (CT) requires

this vaccine. Can titres be checked for meningitis or some other blood work to

see if she needs this? Thanks in advance for any help on this.
