June 21, 1999 Today's Story Governor Bush signs Physician Negotiation Bill GOVERNOR BUSH SIGNS PHYSICIAN NEGOTIATION BILL Legislation allowing independent physicians to band together to negotiation contracts with managed care organizations was signed into law Sunday by Gov. W. Bush. The governor signed Senate Bill 1468 by Sen. (R-Arlington) and Rep. ee (R-Amarillo) late Sunday evening. Sunday was the deadline for the governor to sign or veto bills. Any bill not acted on by midnight became law without his signature. SB 1468 will provide some fairness in the negotiation process between multibillion-dollar health maintenance organizations and physicians, particularly physicians in solo and small group practices. The bill allows independent physicians to discuss contract terms and jointly negotiation those contracts without the threat of antitrust action. All such negotiations will be supervised by the Texas attorney general. The bill takes effect Sept. 1.
