Guest guest
Ellen, Thanks for the hooray :-) Actually there is one thing that's helped my knee(s), indirectly that is. I bought trekking poles quite some time ago. They've enabled me to take outside walks when I otherwise wouldn't have had the strength or balance. They not only take weight off the leg joints but also help build upper body strength (and help ward off aggressive dogs whose owners obviously don't watch the Dog Whisperer). I bought Leki brand (not only adjustable, but the super duper ones with shocks) at EMS, but EMS also has their own brand and different models. They can be adjusted for up and down hills (and also to walk on sides of hills). I usually leave mine one length unless I'm really hurting and need the extra length on downhill slopes. I use them mainly on pavement, even though they're really made for hiking (I can't tell you how many times I've heard " Did you lose your skis? " - almost enough to want to show them a new use for the poles). I know you can buy " walking " poles (one length/non-adjustable), and those would be fine for anyone who walks only flat surfaces and no hills. There's also those new nordic walking poles - used like racewalking (maybe some day). The only time my poles don't work well for me is when my shoulder is really hurting - which got messed up when I had a Lyme flare mainly in my lower back and had to use my right arm a lot to get up when I wasn't home with my higher john - this is almost starting to sound comical - almost (if anyone needs to borrow one of those elevated toidy seats, see me). Hey, at least I *look* healthy (how many times have I heard *that* from people…). Bottom line is my trekking poles have been an absolute godsend! LOL I remembered this morning, as I go about my endless task of trying to be organized [except every day I generate more info than I succeed in organizing - the very definition of a Siscyphean (sp?) task.] some things have been mentioned on the list re knee arthritis/pain: stephanie root see msg #147 artemisinin #202 take care, ellen > > I know you can buy " walking " poles (one length/non-adjustable), and those > would be fine for anyone who walks only flat surfaces and no hills. Guest guest
I have only had a bad knee and knee replacement, but it sounds to me like you are shifting your body possibly as to putting more pressure on your left side........now that the right side is done. Just a guess on my part, but I know I shifted a lot after surgery. dash Knee Help I'm a 57 yr. old male that had a total right hip replacement 1/15/2007 at age 53. My occupation is offset printing, meaning I used to lift a lot of paper boxes and stand on concrete and bend hips all day. Since THR I have taken care to use 1/2 " rubber mats around press and never lift boxes, take out smaller packages instead. Lately I have periodically experienced my left hip giving pain where I can't sleep on it and hurting some most of time. But what has alarmed now is my right knee starting to make me limp through the day. I'm wondering what and where I'm at.
Guest guest
That is also true, the other one could need help, but I assumed that they x-rayed and checked all that! Yah... right. dash Re: Knee Help Mike, get to an OS at your earliest opportunity and get those X-rays and all that jazz so you and he or she can figure out what comes next. I know you know how to do this because you already did it once, in 2007. I am not a physician, but what I have read convinces me that genetics and heredity play a much larger part in all this than anyone likes to admit. For example, I read one study that purports to prove that runners do not incur knee degeneration any more often than anyone else, which defies common sense unless an awful lot of this is genetic. That you already had one joint so badly deteriorated that it had to be replaced suggests at least the possibility that other joints, now, are deteriorating from the same cause. It may not have anything at all to do with lifting boxes, in other words. F
Guest guest
My surgeon told me that my left hip would go soon when I did the right hip. My right knee has been failing slowly all year. I guess I was really asking if wrapping knee with that elastic stuff would help for a while and live with hip. My work makes me work for small business and that has ment alot of heartache with health insurance. My boss and a 30 year old in the company have lymphoma and some other cancer. He dropped the other five families off the roles for high insurance. I have a state of Oklahoma job interview soon, I need to not limp into it. My wife is rhuematoid and doesn't work now. Guest guest
My general practice doctor told me that the reason my other knee and my back are now hurting is because the knee replacement causes that leg to be just a bit longer and so now my alignment has been thrown off, causing pain in the other joints that wasn't there before. > > I have only had a bad knee and knee replacement, but it sounds to me like you are shifting your body possibly as to putting more pressure on your left side........now that the right side is done. Guest guest
Oh Lord, Mike, your health insurance issues are a nightmare. We went through hell with insurance too, and two open heart surgeries and loss of insurance and tons of bills... and finally got old enough for Medicare......finally relief. dash Re: Knee Help My surgeon told me that my left hip would go soon when I did the right hip. Guest guest
That can be true. I Had to get new orthotics and the foot that I didn't have the surgery on, well that had to have a 1/2 " lift put in.... or I walk weird. dash Re: Knee Help My general practice doctor told me that the reason my other knee and my back are now hurting is because the knee replacement causes that leg to be just a bit longer and so now my alignment has been thrown off, causing pain in the other joints that wasn't there before. Guest guest
Just wondering, is there anyone here that regrets having their knee replacement? Be honest, brutally honest. in TX
Guest guest
No I have had a great run with my knee ( 11 years) in fact contrary to most people's thoughts, I found it easier than the hip and the shoulder. I can do anything with my knee that I can do with the one on the opposite side that hasn't been replaced. Which is A-Okay I do REGRET getting my shoulder done.its been nothing short of a nightmare. x -- Re: Knee Help Just wondering, is there anyone here that regrets having their knee replacement? Guest guest
I am thrilled that I had my knees replaced. I'm stronger and more mobile than i'd been in years. The added energy from not being in pain all the time and not saying no to activities has improved all areas of my life. Ok back to power washing the fence.
