Ehrlichiosis can affect multiple organs including the gastrointestinal tract

and liver. If not treated in a timely fasion, ehrlichiosis can progress to

multiorgan failure. This info came from an Arkansas study which says that E.

should be considered as a cause of elevated liver transaminases. Don't have

the citation handy, but will try to post it later. This article was

published in a fairly recent journal issue.

Also, a CDC study says that many, if not most, cases of human monocytic

ehrlichiosis (HME) in patients who present early in the course of the

disease may be missed, underscoring the limitations of serologically based

surveillance systems. There are two kinds of ehrlichiosis: HME and HGE.

In some places in the country there are both kinds.
