Guest guest
Record Pace for Lyme Disease in Wisconsin The CDC says the incidence of Lyme disease in Wisconsin increased at a record pace last year -- up 34% from the previous year, to a total of 657 new cases. Epidemiologists say patterns of Lyme disease in the state are hard to fully explain, although they suspect that climatic conditions are likely factors in the increase. Wisconsin experienced a relatively mild winter the previous year, which meant less snow and subsequently less flooding of woodlands in the spring. Health authorities say that a combination of circumstances added up to favorable conditions for boosting the population of deer ticks. Although health authorities throughout the country are hoping that the newly approved LYMErix vaccine for Lyme disease will help curb new cases, the vaccine is not currently approved for use in children under 15 years of age, the age group at highest risk of infection. According to figures from the CDC, the nationwide incidence of Lyme increased about 24% last year, to a total of nearly 16,000 confirmed cases.
