Dear Kiana: You are awake during the PICC line procedure. You lie

down, and they insert a needle into your arm at the inside of the elbow,

just as if you were having blood drawn. Then, then thread this tiny

rubber band-like tube up your vein and into your vena cava. They'll ask

you to put your head to one side and hold it there so the tube doesn't

decide to go over your shoulder! Then, they'll do a quick x-ray to make

sure it's in the right place, and you're in business! Nothing to it!

Even my son was okay when he had it done by a very gruff, rough guy in

NY.

you are laying down on an exam table...they drape off the area...and it is

basically like getting a regulAR IV IN...OnLY THERE IS SOME BLOOD LEAKAGE

BECAUSE THEY INSERT A LARGER GUIDE..THRU WHICH THE PICC LINE IS INSERTED

....sorry for the caps but I am too darn tired to retype...don't freak about

the blood...just try your best to relax and things will go

easier...afterwards some recommend Motrin to help discourage spasms of the

veins which will cause should pain/achiness....your blood vessels spasm

because you have just introduced a big abnormal item into your body...so the

vein spasses in an attempt to dislodge it b

Hi Kiana,

My line was put in at the house, on the kitchen table! Everything had

sterile coverings, etc., face masks of course, but it was so easy I could not

believe it. No pain at insertion, just a little blood, no problems. I'm

sure you'll be just fine, this is not as invasive as it sounds. I had to use

a heating pad for the first couple of days due to some pain in the

surrounding tissues and the vein itself (cramp-like) but now I can't even

tell I have it in, it's a cinch!

Good luck,

Jim (alabama)

Good luck with what is going on with your child. Is there any signs of

infection? There is always a risk of infection, so be on the lookout. If

there is, I would march myself back there and demand you see someone who

knows what they are talking about and is comfortable with working with PICC

lines. I had that same experience with Cassie and her mediport and the

doctors/nurses were all dumbfounded as to what they were going to do. We

finally ran a blood clotting agent through and her problem was temporarily

fixed. Hopefully, things will work out and the line can be saved. Keep us

posted.

Belinda Rose,

I know what you mean about doctors being dumbfounded. I just don't

understand why they don't have someone at the hospital that knows

about Pediatric PICC lines. Certainly my child is not the only one

with a picc line over the holidays. As of right now the site looks

good. There is no redness or swelling. So hopefully things will be

okay. The up side of things is that the antibiotics are working

wonders, he is feeling extremly WELL! He is not the color of a sheet

and his dark circles are starting to fade. Thanks so much for your

fast response. I hope you guys have a very Happy New Year!

Well I had to bring Abby to the ER this evening. Some of her PICC started

coming out. It only came out 1/2 cm. So they did a sterile dressing change

took a blood culture. And the home healthy care company now has to do

dressing changes 3 times a day. Her line will hopefully come out on Fri

after Abby gets her first IVIG treatment.

I will continue to pray that your son's line will be ok. Jan 2 is tomorrow

so that is good. Keep us posted to what her says.
