In the beginning, I only experienced this burning when I was on IV Claforan and every place (legs & feet) where there had been burning, there is now nerve damage. So, for that time, I believe the burning was caused by the toxins of the dying spirochetes. More recently, I've been experiencing burning in my arms, shoulders, legs & tops of my feet, as well as my wrists & knees. I would have said that this time the burning is caused more by Lyme itself than herxing since it's been ongoing for over a month. But, having read Marta's email in which she said that her doc told her that we can herx even off of abx, I have to wonder if it is herxing afterall. Marta and I, as well a many of you, have often wondered if our worsening of symptoms are flares, regressing or herxing, and I don't know that we've ever really figured it out. But lately I've been thinking about it a lot and I'm really beginning to think that a lot of damage & pain that we experience comes more from the toxins that the dying spirochetes release and that THIS is the segment of Lyme that causes most of our problems. If we can herx off of abx, as well as on, it makes sense to me. In other words, the spirochetes themselves do a certain amount of damage, but their toxins (poison) do even more damage. Just a thought - probably clouded by my muddled Lyme brain, but I wanted to share it with everyone. Ya think that's the real meaning to the Elvis song " Hunka, Hunka BURNING Love " ?!?!?! How about " Come on spiro, light my fire " ??? <G> Geeze, I really need to get a life! <G> Hugs to all, Patty ****************************************************************** > Message: 17 > Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 03:22:03 GMT > From: Kiana Rossi <bornfree@...> > Subject: Re: PICC Line > > >From: McDermott <pattymcd@...> > > > >Hi , > > > >What you're experiencing is very similar to the way my that my > >problems with the PICC line began. You're so right $*@~%^@ & !!! I'm so glad to hear that your fever is gone - at least for now. I guess you've found out first hand that 'when' we herx isn't the same for everyone. I herxed the entire 25 days that I was on IV, with the last 2 days being the worst. So, I'm not surprised at what you're experiencing. And, this time may well be the biggie. Which leads me to something else I want to share with everyone. For the past year I've been experiencing major weakness - not just fatigue - but weakness. My LLD would not allow me to try Flagyl during that time because many of his patients get really weak when herxing on this particular abx and he said that it would be too dangerous for me to become even weaker. The weakness has finally lessened and I started the Flagy with Biaxin about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I've not experienced any major herxing with it, but it is different from previous herxing - new arthritic kind of pain with stiffness, weird sensations throughout my body, and increased muscle twitching. I know that it could still bet worse, but I also know that the Flagyl seems to be getting to spirochetes that other abx haven't. But, I digress - so what's new - right Marta?!! <G> My point is this - herxing can become very intense and can be dangerous. So don't try to tough it out beyond a reasonable level of endurance. It would be safer to stop or decrease the abx. You woud still herx but more safely, and then you can increase the dose or resume abx once you've gotten past the worst of it. I know that we try to be brave and want to kill as many spirochetes as we can, but sometimes " less is better " .
