Guest guest Posted April 17, 2001 Report Share Posted April 17, 2001 We had summer services for our daughter who has Dysraxia, she is 8 now, doing well, but we had to " push " to get her the services she needs. But, it wouldn't hurt to call the DOE Special Education Unit and ask. After fighting the school last year when we were in the other town, and them placing him in kindergarten again, we moved. This school was wonderful this year (except for summer school, which is a different staff). And I was well prepared, thanks entirely due to and Libby for their wonderful ideas. If it wasnt for the 2 of them I wouldnt have known where to begin, or have the courage to even speak up. If you agree with that, no problem. If you do not agree with their plan, you are in for the fight of your life. Read all you can, search the archives here and contact as many of the people on this list as you can. You need informatiion and fast. If you feel that something has changed then write a letter to your case manager and they have to consider your request. They have to get back to you in a certain # of days. E.g. After I received our dev. pediatricians recommendations I requested an IEP meeting. They considered her recommendations and changed it. I then received a PT eval and they changed it again. Of course they never make it easy! As a parent you are a member of the child study team and take an active role in this process. We haven't written up an IEP yet, because I'm going to hold off at least until Fall for preschool (maybe later if the speech services are still going to be only 2x/week, one of them being group). Anyway, my question-the coordinator would really like to do the IEP soon (partly because she's going on maternity leave), as much as 6 months ahead of time. I declined because I know there will be huge changes in my daughter in that amount of time. She tells me that's ok the IEP *isn't* set in stone and can be changed at any time? Is this not true? IEP is a legal document and your child's IEP Team must follow what is in this legal document. You as a parent have every right to call an IEP and/or IEP REVIEW.. Their is a time line to when an IEP is update by IU or School District.. Getting info. on Chapter 14 will help with that. Guest guest Posted July 28, 2004 Report Share Posted July 28, 2004 Yeah, I had to sit on the sidelines and I really did feel like an outcast. Like I said, my school system is behind on many things. But I would rather sit on the sidelines than have the gym teacher make me do something I couldn't do, like in middle school. They had the presidential fitness thing going on, so everyone had to do pull ups - in front of the rest of the class too. Everyone was sitting on the floor while the people that had missed the previous class were doing their pull ups, one by one when she called them up. I was gone (I was gone a lot in middle school, but the guidance counselor couldn't figure out why I always got sick before gym class). Anyways, she called me up. She had been informed of my condition, and I told her I knew I could not do pull ups. She said I sure could and told me to get up on the chair (there was a chair below the pull up bar - once a kid grabbed the bar the chair was pulled away so they could dangle). Of course I tried and ended up falling off the chair in front of all those kids. I was so mortified. Of course, nothing could be done about it because these person they want to call a teacher has been there tormenting kids for years. In my opinion, this should not be happening. I told her clearly that I could not do it, but she told me to do it anyways. My high school gym class was spent keeping attendance, keeping score, and watching the other kids have fun. I also had to write a summary of a Sports Illustrated story every week or so, and give the teacher all the NFL scores on Monday. I was really glad when they finally told me I could go to study hall. The only good thing is the school did provide a physical therapist for me, but she came during my study halls (she couldn't always fit me in her schedule to do it during my gym class). I'm sorry for making this so long, but I want to make parents aware that school may not be doing the best for your child. Talk to your child, and make sure nothing like this is happening to him/her. And make sure the school is providing equal opportunities to your child. It's sad that this had to happen to me. But I guarantee that if I ever have children, they will NOT have to go through this. In my case, I did have to hire an attorney and that resolved everything very quickly. The district I live in is very supportive toward special education services. So I am really speaking of my experience....hard to argue with that. Everyone has different experiences. I know of others in different districts who have had a longer 'waiting it out' time, and the district kept adding services and modifying them until after a year or so they gave up and gave the child what the parents wanted for her. There are no age restictions with the autism scholarship, this has never been a rule. I surely hope school districts are being truthful with their parents....I have ran into several parents in Northeast Ohio who have been told blant lies about not being able to access the scholarship. The last I heard, there were more preschoolers than ever running a ABA in- home program using the scholarship. We are stuck in the OHI category because despite three letters from his Dr's the district is still questioning the autism diagnosis because he already had tourettes and adhd prior to aspergers diagnosis and was in the OHI category. I am in the process of arguing with them to add it to the MFE.
