Guest guest
Connie, Unfortunately, I think that attitude is more the norm. That is why we have to educate. If I were you, I'd me so mad that I would write a letter to all the parents and tell them what happened today and educate them a little about Lyme. And I hate to say it, but no I better not say I hope this head coach does get it, and then she what she thinks. NO No I didn't say it!! Sorry you had go through something so horrible. To me it proves people that say they understand, really can't unless they know someone or are suffering themselves with this insidious disease. It seems most people just have to learn the hard way! I'm luck, recently a friend of mine got in touch with me, she just got diagnosed with Lyme, but (we worked together) she remembered things I said. So at least I know she was paying attention, so not all people are that bad and ignorant. Hang in there. Guest guest
Bernadette, I agree with you about educating the schools, and the story (Connie's?)serving as a reminder. On a brighter note. My son, has some learning disabilities, but still his IQ is in the genius level. However, this year he started Middle School. When he started to slip, his teachers met with me (all eight, including School Nurse and Counselor) and told me when one day, one of them said they were going to call me at home, and my son replied, " good luck, she probably won't answer the phone (part of his problem is he has a big mouth!). When this caring teacher asked why (instead of punishing him for his rude behavior) he told them I sleep all day because I have Lyme. This teacher talked to the Nurse, and they info on Lyme. At the conference they told my son they knew how concerned he must be for me, but it wouldn't help me if I stressed over his school and study habits. I was so touched, that they went to the trouble to find out this information, and even asked me more questions about my symptoms, and seemed very concerned. So there are some out there that still care and want to be educated. With regard to finding out if your case was reported, I've been thinking about that to. I think your LLMD would be able to tell you, since it would be his job to do so right? I'm going to ask during my next appt. However, I'm worried he may think I want him to and therefore target him for investigation. Which I do not want to do. But I'll ask and let you know my results. Guest guest
Thanks for that info Bernadette.........boy isn't there anything for sure in this disease??? Can't even rely on the tests performed on the tick itself. I had the most upsetting thing happen today..........As you know I am the assistant coach of field hockey at my school ......its nearing the end of the season......and the Head Coach allowed the team to go on a nature walk........(our school in NWNJ is bordered by woods).......I could see other teams also in the woods.....hiking around. The kids had on shorts and tee-shirts........ I expressed my concern about the ticks/lyme disease........and her response was " ahh, if they are going to get it......so they get it " I was shocked.......and again expressed my opinion........I couldn't believe her attitude........She then told me, she does hay every year on the farm, standing in tall grass, and never protects herself.......she repeated " hey, if I'm going to get it.......so I'll get it " ....thats when I said " you don't realize the seriousness of the disease.......people have been crippled, even died!!! ....... ..Wow, she hasn't been listening to me at all.........I have been so sick over the last four years.......she has seen me limping, coughing, bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep, sweating and changing my clothes several times during one day, injections, medications, missed days, weeks, even months of work.......etc..... How quickly they forget....It made me think..........how many other people out there, don't really know how much I have struggled day to day.........and how many more people out there are infected with this disease........and are barely functioning, bedridden, crippled, severely handicapped, or have died!!!! Wow, I'm very saddened by today's events........I hope this attitude is the minority.... or the search for a cure......may never exist in our future!!! Guest guest
Vicki, call Nick at Igenex. He will return your call. Leave your question on his voice mail if he is not in. Ask him if the Labs send in the cases to be counted or does the local LLMD? Any dr in his right mind would not report it at this witchhunting time. Guest guest
Hi Connie, Wow, I can see why you are upset, such a shame your co-worker has such a cavalier attitude about the health and well-being of her students. I can understand her attitude for herself but not poor innocent kids. You did the right thing telling her about how serious this disease, as for her not relating your illness to the bite of a tick....I too hope she is in the minority, but we know she isn't. Take care. Guest guest
Hi B, I know my case of HME was reported to the Board of Health as they sent notification to my doctor, I have a copy of it...as for Lyme, doctors aren't required to report it unless the WB has all the bands that CDC requires, I just read that in the latest Lyme Alliance newsletter. I wonder if the school nurse would tell you how many kids in the school district are currently being treated for Lyme and missing school, that should open her eyes if she correlates that information to your request.
