I cant imagine the feeling of finding a tick on your daughter. I look

my 5 yr old over when she is in the tub and have never seen anything.

But to be honest Im not really sure what Im looking for. I feel really

stupid but I have never seen a tick and am not sure I would know it if

I did see it. I really just look for anything dark in color and if I

found something I would probably scare her half to death because I

would be so flipped out. Can you guys give me a clue what to look for

and how to recognize a tick whether in the skin or just wandering

around on the ground? I REALLY feel dumb! I may have seen the tick that

got me and not even known it.

Thanks for info gang.

,

Imagine a black poppy seed with legs.

That's what they look like. They are teeny teeny tiny, black or dark brown,

and usually (I think) somewhat shiny. I saw one in my daughter's hair years

ago and never realized what it was, since I couldn't see its legs. At the

time I thought it was a tiny scab. Then later I saw one that her babysitter

pulled off of her ankle and realized what the thing on her head had been.

But this one was clearly a teeny bug, cemented to her instep by its

mouthparts. I totally bungled getting it off of her and I think I left its

mouthparts in her skin. I can see a teeny speck left behind, but I can't get

it out. I tried to use a tick removal tool but she was so hysterical and I

was so upset that I didn't do a very good job.

I put antibiotic cream on the spot, and she's already on 375 mg of

amoxicillin 3 times a day, so I'm hoping she'll be okay. I will call the

doctor tomorrow if the speck is still there.

Hi

Good grief, can you move? I know that is far fetched, I am really sorry

to hear about your poor little girl, and I sure do understand your disgust.

I hope you made the other little girl's parents aware of the danger in their

backyard.

Hugs,

Marta

Oh Jean. Maybe you caught that one in time? I hope so. We are under siege but

not only from ticks. From stupid and unknowlegable docs and insurance

companies and unknowingly, from friends and relatives who don't understand

this disease either. I hope all is well with your daughter. Hang in there, WE

understand, LOL.

Well, Marta... I am moving tomorrow (aaaagghhhh!) but it's to a place with more

ticks rather than less. We're going from a 3-room basement apartment with no

grass, trees, etc to a 3-bedroom house with a yard and a small patch of woods

behind. I am planning on checking this kid meticulously every day. Luckily it's

a small patch of woods with no deer in it (yet). The yard where she got bitten

has deer and turkeys wandering around it almost every day (it backs onto a

county park).

And the friend in whose yard she picked up the tick has had ADD-like symptoms,

back pain, neck pain and depression for years but *will not* get tested. He

walks in the woods several times a week, and never does a tick check. I've

nagged him about it so many times but it does no good at all. Even watching me

struggle through this hell of the last 9 months hasn't moved him to protect

himself. But I think some of that is confusion from the Lyme (if that's what it

is). He's a professional musician (guitar, fiddle, mandolin) and a court

stenographer. I don't know what he'll do if he gets arthritis. But you know how

some people are....

It's so frustrating!

Hi

I know what you mean...it is so FRUSTRATING! You try to be careful and

when you least expect it, there it is. I've had over 30 bites in the

last 3 summers...all from living where I live. Where do you live? Will

your daughter's MD extend the abx now that she's been bitten again?

My best, Joan

Hi

Good luck on that move, hope you get lots of help. Sorry to hear about

your hard headed friend....so sad, but some people are very stubborn until

it is too late. Keep an eye on your daughter, I imagine since she is on the

abx, she will be OK.

Hugs,

Marta (Southern, NJ)
