Guest guest
I remember reading an article on www.drugdigest.org that taking aloe vera juice with sarsaparilla (smilax) can cause interactions (irreg. heartbeat, mental changes, vision changes). my new doc wants to compound a hormone cream that uses aloe gel as a delivery base. the article says that interaction between sarsaparilla and topical aloe gel are not BELIEVED to cause any interactions. however, i'm still cautious. has anyone on this list been mixing these ingredients (using topical aloe of any kind)? do you think it's safe? Guest guest
hi steve, i posted a memo about this back in october because i was drinking aloe juice twice every day as part of balancing constipation issues, plus using smilax three times a day--AT THE SAME TIME (plus mixing it with stevia, which also had potential interactions). because of this potential interaction, i changed two things: 1. i changed from using whole aloe juice to using 's distilled aloe, which has the most irritating chemicals removed, yet it still seems to help my intestines. 2. based on the drugdigest, it just says " aloe juice and sarsaparilla should not be taken at the same time. " so i spaced out when i take the aloe and smilax, waiting a few hours. i also emailed buhner, asking him if he was aware of interactions between oral aloe and smilax. here's his reply: hi kendra, I am not aware of any negative interactions. that doesn't mean there are not any, but I have not heard of any. both are pretty easy on the body. I do list some contraindications for aloe in my book herbal antibiotics. I don't remember any really bad ones. best, stephen regarding using aloe topically, i use aloe topically everyday too--the whole, organic pure gel. i've not noticed any problem. i personally feel it's safe to use aloe topically with the smilax. may all become clear when the time is ripe. kendra -----Original Message----- I remember reading an article on www.drugdigest.org that taking aloe vera juice with sarsaparilla (smilax) can cause interactions (irreg. heartbeat, mental changes, vision changes). my new doc wants tocompound a hormone cream that uses aloe gel as a delivery base. the article says that interaction between sarsaparilla and topical aloe gel are not BELIEVED to cause any interactions. however, i'm still cautious. has anyone on this list been mixing these ingredients (using topical aloe of any kind)? do you think it's safe? Guest guest
Kendra, Thanks so much. that makes me feel a lot more at ease about mixing smilax w/ topical aloe. man, you were really in the high risk zone back in november as far as possible interactions. it's kind of funny how buhner ends his reply with: > I do list some contraindications for aloe in my book herbal > antibiotics. I don't remember any really bad ones. yikes. i hope his memory is right. Guest guest
hi steve, fyi, i have a copy of buhner's book Herbal antibiotics. curiously, the main cautions are about using oral aloe for constipation (part of why i changed to the distilled version). he says: " the dried [aloe] plant was historically used for constipation in western medical practice. it is almost never used this way now: the plant is strongly active, with potential unpleasant side effects from internal use, and there are easier alternatives. " page 24 " side effect and contraindications external use: none internal use: hemorrhoids (produces irritation and heat around anus when taken internally), pregnancy (stimulates smooth muscle contractions), active gastrointestinal tract inflammation. " i found these cautions very intereseting because whole aloe juice is so often marketing as " soothing " for intestines--not! i also found other info supporting buhner's summary about aloe. learning as i go, kendra -----Original Message----- Kendra, Thanks so much. that makes me feel a lot more at ease about mixing smilax w/ topical aloe. man, you were really in the high risk zone back in november as far as possible interactions. it's kind of funny how buhner ends his reply with: > I do list some contraindications for aloe in my book herbal > antibiotics. Guest guest
Kendra thanks. how strange that aloe is an intestinal irritant. what else is new? Guest guest
Steve, just another info on the topic cream. Hubby suffers from eczema (sometimes serious) since birth. Aloe is one of the plants highly recommended. But he could never stand it on his skin. At least, none of the creams we tried. It triggers eczema for him. So I never gave him aloe juice. Aloe also didn't ART tested good for my daughter that suffers from eczema too. But I drank the stuff, didn't feel any difference, and stopped (I guess it was when I was still with diarrhea due to lyme or whatever, can't remember). But I keep reading about wonders of this plant... Selma
Guest guest
wow. the compounding pharmacy gave me a choice for the cream base - they said aloe was the least reactive and the one that hyper- sensitive people prefer. Guest guest
I have only used Aloe once since on herbs. And it was just on an injury for a couple of times this past fall. I did't notice any interactions at all. But I wasn't looking for any either.
