I am not Ruth, but it is http://www.virtualgait.com/pages/frames.html It is

listed on the Links page and if you search the archives they have been

discussed several times. They sound good, but for me it's a LONG way to

Vegas from south GA and a week or two in a motel there would not be in my

budget.

Virtual Gail is simply the name of the company run by Jean- Neilsen and

three of his colleagues, Marmaduke Loke who has his office in San Diego,

Mitch Warner and Jean- Neilsen of Las Vegas and a third gentlemen up in

Vancouver, British Columbia. Jean- Neilsen started the company. He

originally worked for the Oregon Orthotic System (he might have even started

that company but don't quote me on that).

Jean- Neilsen invented and has a patent pending of the helix braces and

double helix braces. He designed these braces specifically for CMT and Post

Polio patients due to the fact that supposedly the two ailments have alot of

the same symptons. These braces are unlike anything on the market as far as

AFO's are concerned. I was told that I would need a KAFO braces for my legs

since my thighs were becoming so weak and also I have severe recurvatum in my

knees (my knees extend way back). I had been corresponding with Jean- at

the same time I was going to my orthotist in Lancaster and he called

Jean- for me and Jean- told him that he thought he could help me stay

out of KAFO's with the double helix braces. I flew out to Vegas in December

and stayed for one week and was retrained on how to walk with the double

helix braces. Some people don't have to spend a week there, it depends on

the severity of your legs and feet. I stayed at a very inexpensive motel

that Jean- recommended for me that was very close to his office. He had

offered to pick me up at the airport and bring me to my motel but I chose to

rent a car instead. I had written to Ruth earlier today and congratulated

her on getting her new braces and told her that it is impossible to explain

how great these braces are for CMT patients. My legs were extremely weak

and my balance was horrendous and I was just about ready to get a scooter.

With these braces I can perform my daily functions so much easier and not get

so fatigued. My balance has improved 100%. I never worry about losing my

balance and falling anymore. I don't understand physics and principals

behind why these braces work so much better than other braces. All I do know

is that they do. I do know that they are made of a special material that no

other brace out there is made of (I think it is a carbon composite) and there

is a patent pending. When you walk the helix part of the brace bends a tiny

bit and propels you forward. They are supposedly very durable and

guaranteed for 2 years against breakage. I know you have kids and that

is why I mentioned this although I myself do not have the energy like a child

does to put these to the test in that respect. They are very expensive but

for me they have been worth every penny. I hope I answered some of your

questions .

Oh I forgot to mention, I think you mean KAFO instead of DAFO. A KAFO

is a knee, ankle, foot orhosis. It is a huge entire length of leg brace.

>>>>>>KAFO I have seen are up to mid thigh, not full leg brace length. I

have braces from toes to groin and wanted KAFO's not the ones I had to have.

They showed me the difference in them. Due to my having less than 50% quad

strength, I had to have the full leg braces. ~>Becky M.

: I have no idea if Blue Cross will cover them but apparently Ruth is

going to try and see if they do. Maybe she can let you know how she makes

out. Also, remember Mr. Loke had offered a free set of the double helix

braces to a child on . I have no idea if anybody from the group ever

took him on his offer. You could contact him and see. You will live out in

California, his office is in San Diego.
