Guest guest
As Lang points out in her book, Coping With Lyme Second Edition, the economics of city, state, United States, all play a part in physicians being unwilling to diagnose and treat Lyme or to even let the patient know that Lyme is a differential diagnosis. Otherwise, how else could it have taken over 20 years for me to get diagnosed correctly and begin receiving effective treatment? The tourism dollars, along with tax dollars involved when corporations relocate to new cities or states are very much involved in the politics of Lyme. Also, doctors who diagnose too many cases that are reportable to the CDC, run the risk of causing their area to be listed as Lyme endemic, thus the overt and indirect threats to doctors who do diagnose and treat Lyme Disease. In the beginning before we both were diagnosed with Lyme and I was the only one receiving treatment, my hubby took a rx for Zith to a pharmacy we had traded with for 10 years. The pharmacist (one of several) would not fill the Zith as it was rx'd 2 x per day and she just knew it was too much and wrong of her to fill it. I called her back after typing out what she had to say out loud that my hubby could remember so we would have some written account of what occurred before it was lost. One of the things she did to ask him out loud what I was being treated for, and I am assuming by her actions at first she believed it was AIDS as Zith is used with AIDS too or was at the time. My spouse answered her before he thought better of it. I was livid that she pulled such a nasty stunt, had I actually had AIDS, it would have been a demoralizing thing to have happen. I was angry for the AIDS patients she had probably done the same way. I called her on the phone and asked her when she obtained a doctorate so she could practice medicine! I was angry, using proper language, but she backed down. I told her not to bother with filling the rx, we were changing pharmacies, and would not be needing her services any longer. Just a small incident, but indicative of the harassment that doctors who are compassionate enough to treat us have to deal with. Had she been less worried about her job she might have even turned in my doctor for malpractice. As it was, my phone call was I think what shut her up on that score, possibly not. I didn't and don't need to get my scripts filled by pharmacists who second guess my Lyme literate physician. Guest guest
That has got to be against some pharmaceutical equivalent of the Hippocratic oath. I raised hell once when I went to pick up a prescription and the young girl collecting the money for it said very loudly (with many other patrons in line behind me), " That's the prescription for PROZAC???? " I was furious and called the pharmacist when I got home, complaining that I didn't feel particularly comfortable sharing that information with the rest of the world. He was appalled and said that he would take care of it right away ... that under no circumstances should anything personal be mentioned to a customer by anyone in the pharmacy. I would think that pharmacists have been brought up on charges for lesser crimes than asking, " What the hell disease have you GOT? " Sorry. Today it just feels like we Lymies can't turn a corner without bumping into a brick wall. (Michigan)
Guest guest
, Geesh! Unbelievable! Small incident my foot! I can't believe a Pharmacist would pull such a stunt. I'm so glad you set her straight. I often wonder what my pharmacy thinks I have with all my prescriptions. But thank goodness they are all very professional and nice and don't ask. What nerve!
