Kay,

I took this test and scored 33 - very depressed, recommended seeking

counsel. THe problem is, it doesn't ask you if you have a major illness. So

I disagree with the results, its not clinical depression that I have, anyone

that is sick this long with this awful controversial disease, would be

depressed. But it was very interesting, thanks, Vicki, Md

i am glad you took the test. i hadn't really thought of why i was posting

this to lyme-aid but now i have realized why!

being depressed does NOT mean you are bad or wrong. it means you need help.

and thank GOD there IS HELP!

it DOES NOT MATTER what the " reason " for depression is! some diseases CAUSE

depression, chemically.

it does not mean you are not strong if you are depressed! admitting you need

help and getting it is strong.

i BELIEVE lyme CAUSES depression! not just because we have to deal with the

emotional stressors that come with having the disease, but BIOLOGICALLY it

makes us depressed.

BUT, even if it is caused by the emotional stress, why should we not ask for

help with this sx of lyme too????

because of STIGMA! that is why!

do not hold the stigma of mental ILLNESS against yourself or ANYONE else!

it is mental ILLNESS! just like lyme disease is an ILLNESS! this is a

BIOLOGICAL disease, NOT a weakness!!!

it is time for all of us to take a good hard look at how we may be judging

others. we don't want others to judge us as weak or " crazy " because of lyme

disease, no one should be thought of as weak or " crazy " because of mental

disease either. NO ONE!

mental illness is not something to be ashamed of. it is a debilitating

DISEASE that can often be treated.

when my baby was 8 years old she was psychotic, delusional, homicidal,

suicidal, having visual hallucinations, paranoia, depression, severe

confusion, RAPID cognitive decline. no one knew what was wrong with her. she

had test after test after test, they said maybe mitochondrial

encephalopathy, which meant she would die young, maybe schizophrenia (but

she was so severely affected so young that they weren't sure about that

either). we saw over 20 doctors in less than 2 years. she was presented in

front of a panel of new england's top neurologists at mass general. she

spent weeks in a locked pediatric psychiatric unit.

everyone around us ran! why didn't we just give her a good spanking? why did

we let her get away with such behavior? why didn't we just leave her alone

and let her play in her own backyard? what was wrong with us, with our

parenting? why did we give her those terrible psychiatric medications? maybe

they were the problem. maybe i was the problem, maybe we just don't want

anything to do with you anymore!

she lost ALL of her friends. we lost almost all of our " friends " .

she was MENTALLY ILL!!! FROM LYME DISEASE!!!!

if it hadn't been for her mental illness we would still not be dxd here.

(me, her and my son)

if i had listened to the doctors she would literally be dead or

institutionalized.

on a VERY HAPPY note! she and my son and i are all almost weaned off all

psychiatric meds! BUT i would NEVER HESITATE to use them again if we had

mental illness no matter what the cause! not that i don't HATE them! i do,

but they saved our lives. they helped us stay alive and have the strength to

keep fighting the fight.

whew!

getting off soapbox!

Hi Kay,

I think it is probably because I hate to admit I am depressed and like the

idea of blaming it on the Lyme disease. I also hate to admit, but most of

us know there is still a great stigma about having any type mental problem,

hopefully this is changing.

Hugs,

Marta

,

You have to read what it says under your score. I got 26 and it says I

am very depressed.

Marta

Kay,

You are so right! I get herpes fever blisters a lot, and can never figure

out if its the virus making me depressed and so fatigued, or the depression

and fatigue causing the fever blister. I have finally come to the conclusion

that it is the latter, just like Lyme, it is chemical and depression or

stress doesn't help. So sorry you have been through so much! I'm am

fortunate that I have 3 healthy children and a healthy husband. I do take

Celexa for my depression and it does help most of the time. Thanks for the

info. Vicki
