We deserve disability just as much as others, maybe even more so. I do know people who I really wonder why they get it, never ever seen them sick or talk about an illness. Guest guest Posted February 20, 1999 Report Share Posted February 20, 1999 Congrats marta........ know the feeling when i was finally approved it was such a release......and those big retro checks are great ......almost made me forget struggling 2 years with no money....unfortunatly they did not last long they went to pay back help i had recieved for 2 years ......between my ssd and pension we can now be comfortable.....not rich but comfy.......it only took about 30 days for me to get money..... and i am still owed some retro that they overheld for my attorneys fees.....like u said never give up.....get4 ur congrwessman involved(it helped me) and do not be disappointed when u are turned down twice .....it is the norm for lyme .......luckily i skipped the hearing .....they have a new step.....an attorney at ss can review.....i think they were so sick of hearing from my congressman .....they gave it to me at attorney review i just sent them updated med reports stating that i did not have a recovery........marta i am so happy for u i know the feeling..... Guest guest Posted February 20, 1999 Report Share Posted February 20, 1999 Thanks Connie, You are right, I should not think of it as a stigma, I should look at it as finally getting recognition for being sick.....I already feel old, so that part doesn't matter either. This has been a real burden to me mentally. Although my husband and I are not destitute just on his salary. I have worked since I was 15 till age 46....I was used to having my own money and not asking for it from anyone. It will be good to have my own money again, no matter how small an amount. I have an appointment this coming Monday with a psychiatrist for depression, secondary to my Lyme disease......I really want to cancel it now, as I feel tons better than I did. My self esteem would be greater I am sure if I could work again, but this sure has perked me up lots. Now I am wondering about taxes I will have to pay on disability income. Do you know how that works....if I am going to owe something next year, I sure want to put it aside now. My husband is still employed and I guess they will combine our income and tax a portion of the SSDI benefits. Do they send you a 1099 telling you how much is taxable? Guest guest Posted February 20, 1999 Report Share Posted February 20, 1999 marta, yes they send u a 1099, but i still do not know how much is taxable......i am going to have my tax's done by a pro this year......some of the money was retro for 97 and i dont know how that works.......plus my wife caught a big mistake they made on the 1099 she called them and they are correcting it.....(they tried to say the paid us doulbe the amount they withheld for attorneys fees......when they haven't paid him yet or sent me the balance of it .....it should be 00 since they haven't sent it yet) luckily my wife is good at checking stuff like that me and my lyme brain would have never caught it....lol.........when i find out i will let u know........ Guest guest Posted February 21, 1999 Report Share Posted February 21, 1999 , about the lawyer, they are paid directly by ss....... out of my retro benefits $6000.00 was held back for lawyers payments even though my contract with my lawyer maxed him out at $4000.00......for some reason they take out extra.........thus when they pay my lawyer i will receive the $2000.00 overage that they withheld...... I've been reading the post pertaining to whether taxes need to be paid when one is on SSDI. My question to the married peope is: At the end of the year, doesn't the workng spouse get to declaire the disablied spouse as a dependent?If so, wouldn't that reduce the amount of income tax to pay from the SS check? My 2nd question has to due with the legall fees paid to the lawyer. The amount of money that is taken out of the check from SS for the lawyer, is that reimbursed back to the client? I know there is a maximum amount that the lawyer can charge, but it seems that I've been reading in here that people are getting that money back from SS. Guest guest Posted February 25, 1999 Report Share Posted February 25, 1999 lea, \do u live in nj?.....in are state we recieve a rebate called the homested rebate onb taxs.......if u r permantly disabled(ssd) u should recieve $500.00 per yr.....ohters who qualify gfet $95 per year........the two years i waited for ss, i only got (% when i questioned my assemblyman they chweck and found i was entitled to $500 for three years and sent me a check......cool huh.......if u are not in nj but are totally disbled u should check with ur state for any disabled programs........ps. had to go to the vet. admin. today to redo my financil papers........even though i get ssd and a pension for diability i will only now have to pay for rx's($2) and still nothing for treatments......thank god i was in the service........they do not do my lyme treatment but i go for everything else and get my abx thru them........was paying nothing ......now $2 per rx but its better than full price.....
