Guest guest
Hi, If it is anxiety, then maybe he should speak to a therapist. goes to therapy and it is not a bad thing- they will know how to deal with his fears. And if someone has fears, they are real to them. Did something happen during a storm that he is remembering? Sometimes their reaction is much later to something that happened a while ago. Recommending therapy- just my opinion.
Guest guest
Hi , I read that suggested therapy, and I think it may be something to consider if Ben is having a hard time with this. I know storms create anxiety for lots of kids - here in Ohio, we get such sudden, strong storms, my kids get anxious about it. I know of a little girl who had lots of anxiety issues, ended up seeing a psychiatrist, and one of the things that set it off was a sudden severe storm.  Something else; years ago, my oldest , was having anxiety attacks, and he told me at the time he thought he was having a heart attack. Well, I thought how impossible that was, but we found out later he really did have an undiagnosed heart defect - a slight murmur, called mitral valve prolapse, that sometimes causes chest pain. Imagine what a cycle that was! He would have anxiety, and/or this pain, and it would start over. Since you mentioned Ben has chest/stomach pain, and he may have a ds-related heart issue, it is just something to think about.  Good luck with it. Sounds like you are doing all the right things anyway - just keep talking to him about it every time he brings it up, giving him all the reassurance that you can.  Patty From: CINDY MATTERN <cindymattern@...> Subject: Anxiety issues " " < > Date: Monday, August 10, 2009, 9:16 AM I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.... My son, Ben, is 16. Lately he complains he's scared of storms and I always tell him there are none. However he then has stomach/chest issues and says that he is sick. This happens every 3-4 days or so. I'm wondering if these problems are related to anxiety because he will say over and over he is scared of storms and no matter how many times I tell him there are none he keeps telling me. Could he be developing anxiety issues? Has anyone else experienced this? He has been to the Dr. and had tests and they of course are normal. The only meds that he is on is synthroid and xyzal (for allergies). Any ideas would be helpful. Guest guest
Hi , asks every night at least 10 times if it is raining outside. She started this after Hurricane Ike, so I imagine it is because the lights went out after the storm started and it was a scary storm. She also does not like loud noises. She has never lost her startle reflex, and I can see it in her face the frustration she feels when she is caught off guard...she gets embarrassed. I suffer from anxiety. Without being too graphic, when something unsettling happens, the first thing that happens to me is my stomach hurts and I have to go to the bathroom. Almost like a nervous stomach. My heart will start to race and I find myself having to take big breaths because it feels like I can't catch my breath. The attacks have progressed to where my hands become numb and my face becomes numb...when the facial numbess first happened, I thought maybe I was having a stroke. I felt like I was talking funny, but I wasn't...I just couldn't feel part of my face. The best way to describe anxiety is this (for me)... You know when you were little and you knew you would be going to a birthday party/slumber party (or maybe to someplace fun that you didn't get to go to very often)? Your stomach would jump just thinking about going...maybe even hours before you were going to leave....you were anxious to get to that fun time...or maybe that stomach jump we had as teens when the boy we liked smiled back at us (not saying that doesn't happen now, just an example).  That's kind of how it feels, but not a happy, giddy feeling...a scary " I don't understand why I feel this way " feeling. And then, the more you think about it, the worse it gets...not a fun cycle. I take medication, but it does not keep all anxiety away, just minimizes the attacks. I am not suggesting you have your baby medicated, but I would agree with the others and take him to a therapist just to see what might be going on. It may have nothing to do with thunderstorms. It took me a few months of wetting the bed every night to snap that something was wrong (not related to her questions now about rain). And I have heard of underlying heart murmurs...it's always best to be safe. Hope it all works out for both of you!  Moyers Kay Independent Beauty Consultant 832-816-7992 www.marykay.com/jendmoyers ________________________________ From: Patty Derdzinski <pderdzinski@...> cindymattern@...; Sent: Monday, August 10, 2009 3:59:25 PM Subject: Re: Anxiety issues  Hi , I read that suggested therapy, and I think it may be something to consider if Ben is having a hard time with this. Guest guest
When my older daughter was small she was afraid of storms. I think mostly because on a hot day I would leave the windows open as long as I could till the storm hit and then would rush around closing them. I would have climbing one of my legs and a cat on the other one. Then when she was a little older there was a terrible tornado that hit the other side of Kansas City, lots of damage and deaths. She heard about that and was afraid and the other kids would tease her, the least little wind or storm and they would tell her it was a tornado so she'd come running in. Then when was small he was afraid of thunder. When he was 3 we got a puppy and they would huddle together on the floor. It seemed to help both of them. Thunder is a hard thing for children and animals to understand. And did you ever try explaining why the electricity is off to a child. was quite an authority on ghosts and one day he was upset because he couldn't get any TV or whatever. I tried to explain to him about the electricity coming through the walls on wires and such and he looked at me like I was out of my mind. Finally, I said " The ghosts quit working " . That made sense to him. When he was older I told him that one day, and he told me, " I'm too old for that one now " . Me too. Jessie
Guest guest
Hi , Yes...we're afraid of thunderstorms here too. wants to know what kind of rain we're going to have. Basically he wants to know if we're going to have thunder and lightening. He also worries about the electricity going off. And he worries about flooding. It's raining right now and thunder is rumbling. It's been like this all summer. Yes, it makes him anxious. We've been having issues with elevated blood pressure too. Doc prescribed Clonidine to help with anxiety and bp. can't take that med. He couldn't function. He's taking a blood pressure only med now. I'm wondering to myself about the Levothyroxine takes. It seems to agitate him. Maybe it needs changed. Anyhoo just letting you know...we got thunderstorm issues here too. Guest guest
Hi All, I am from South Africa have been diagnosed as being both Hypothyroid and with Hypogonadism, and currently being treated for both. My anxiety which started prior to the diagnosis continues unabated, however I have had my Thyroid medication tweeked a few times. My protocol for Hypogonadism ( 4 months to date) is currently 100mg/week of depo-T(test cyp) and 1/4 mg Arimidex E3D to keep the Estridiol in check. My last lab results are: Total T = 26 nmol/l range 7.3 to 28.6 CFT = 0.9 nmol/l range 0.256 to 0.71 E2 = 73 pmol/l range 40 to 161 TSH = 2.02 miu/l range 0.27 to 4.2 T4 = 14.6 pmol/l range 12 to 22 Can you please advise on the Anxiety issues. Thanks Vicky
Guest guest
Hi Phil, Thanks for your reply. For Hypothyroidism, I take Eltroxin, which I believe is the same as Synthroid( T4 replacement only). Prior to being on meds my TSH was 4.78miu/l. Correction to my previous post, my T4 lab results is actually FT4 results ( 14.6 pmol/l) and my FT3 results taken at an earlier time is 3.9 pmol/l ( range 2.6 to 5.7). I understand that there is a lot of debate re: T4 replacement or T4/T3 replacement in the medical fraternity. I am not sure how I am going to convince my endo to switch to the T4/T3 alternative. What do you suggest? Regarding Cortisol, my ENDO did recommend doing an ACTH stimulation test, which showed adequate Cortisol response at the different time intervals. I don't have any problems sleeping but my problems re: the anxiety seems to be GAD (Generalized). I just worry too much. Guest guest
Most of he people I have talked to on Thyroid were seeing an Endo my wife was on she never felt better on Synthyroid she went from Endo to Endo all saying same thing your Depressed and your anxiety is due to this. Then they offer her Prozac they will never give one a desiccated thyroid med like Armour, Westhyroid or Naturethyroid. I went to STTM site http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ when I found out my Thyroid was low and later ended up working there as a mod. I went to Armour's web site and put in my zip code and found a Dr. that uses Armour we can't get Armour to day but the other brands are good even the FDA is letting Canada’s “Thyroid†by Er fa in this country with out paper work. http://WNW.erfa-sa.com/thyroid_usa.htm I am told by people this is the best there is. At ST TM in this link will help you find a better Dr. stop seeing Endo's they are not good Dr.'s for hormones only good for high sugar problems. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/how-to-find-a-good-doc/ After about 15 yrs my wife seen my Dr. went on Armour and says she never felt this good in all the yrs she was on Synthroid.
