Tana, I have been asking this question to and can't find anything. I would

think painting is safe but I had such a bad skin reaction to painting lugols

I don't want to give it to my children.

Hello,

I am Tana, I joined this group after seeing it mentioned on NaturalThyroidHormones. I've been looking through the files and links and I have a few questions...

Do people supplement iodine for their children? I'm switching our family to sea salt, so that means my kids won't be getting any iodine or iodide. Should I do a paint test on them?

Do you use lugol's for the paint test? I gather that I paint it on and see if there is any color left after 24 hours, and if not then we need to supplement with iodine/iodide?

I've been taking kelp capsules for iodine recently, should I stop that if i start painting or should I do both together?

Sorry for so many questions, I am just getting started in all this! I have hypothyroid and low adrenals which is why I'm doing all this research. My husband has low adrenals too, and I'm suspicious that one or both of my children are following in our footsteps.<<<

=============

Hi Tana - Celtic Salt does have Iodine - naturally occuring. Just google it and you will see the mineral content. I used regular Iodine Tincture 1% to paint with (from Walgreens). I don't know about Lugol's. I don't know if it has a color and that is key. Every article I have read tells you to use the Tincture. I do not supplement my children but suspect they will follow in my thyroid / iodine footsteps as well so I am learning and they will deal with them.

Hi, I heard about this through the SCd lists. I have crohn's disease, chronic

anemia, etc.

Is there any reason at all to be worried about getting prescriptions from

doctors over the phone and having the pharmacist mail this drug to you--is it

legal? Is it something strong enough to check with your own doctor first

especially if you've had complications in the past, etc.? Who do you ask about

other drug interactions, etc.?

Or just point me to archives, etc. if I can find all the information--

Thanks,

Debbie 40 crohn's dx 3/02

Deb,

Congratulations on your determination to improve your life ! With 5 kids and 4 grandkids, it's understandable why you feel fatigued !

I have to say that most of my life I felt fatigued. I have never been overweight and never had any chronic health issues but was always very tired. It started when I was in high school. I didn't sleep well during that time and in college. Too worried about my future perhaps. I always thought that was why I was tired. It never really got much better although, I did start sleeping a little better after college. About 3 yrs ago, I started "studying" nutrition a lot more, reading books and talking to people. I always thought that my diet was good, better than most people. When I started keeping a Food Journal, I started to see that I was eating a lot more salty, sugary and processed foods than I thought. Today my diet is about 95% vegan and I mostly eat organic fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts. I make a lot of my food from scratch instead of buying processed (ie/ salsa in

the Vitamix, hummus instead of mayo, etc). It does take some time to do this but I have gotten better and more efficient at preparing my food and making sure that I have it so that I don't have to eat fast food. It takes determination and dedication but it is well worth it. Over the 3 yrs, my diet has gradually been eliminating the processed food and animal protein foods. For about the past year, I have had so much energy that I cannot believe it. Another bonus is that I have not been sick but one time in the past 3 yrs.

About 6 months ago I had a life change as both of my parents have dementia and could not live alone anymore. I had to stay with my dad in the hospital/nursing home care while he literally came back from the brink of death due to acute renal failure (the dementia disabled either of my parents from being able to take care of themselves until his prostate issues got to that point and a neighbor called 911). In this time I have had to take over all the responsibilities of their lives. I do believe that if I had not improved my health to the point that I have, that I would not have made it through the past 6 months. My sister in law got terminal cancer after caring for her mother with dementia for many years. I believe it wore her down to that point and her immune system became so weak.

Sorry to ramble on......

I believe that a vegetarian/vegan diet is not right for everyone. You have to find what works best for you.

Good Luck to you !

Hello Deb,I got into Vitamix because I'd been nearly bedridden for 7 years with chronic fatigue syndrome. What got me out of it was drinking a Green Smoothie daily, getting off of ALL forms of processed sugar (including in packaged foods which meant making stuff from scratch most of the time) and getting off of wheat. If you try those 3 things you WILL loose weight and have more energy. However, about 2 years later I "crashed" my adrenals again, and had to do a LOT of research on adrenal and hypothyroid issues. If changing your diet as mentioned above does not give you all of the relief that you hope for - feel free to call me and I'll walk you through the tests that I took and the supplements that I'm on to help me maintain my life and my job :-) I have yet to meet a person with chronic fatigue for whom the adrenals were not an issue and for me the book, "Stop The Thyroid Madness" was invaluable. You can get a copy of that book on the website by the same name.I've seen, "The Future of Food" - scary isn't it? For anyone who might like to watch this very informative movie you can get it on Netflix or watch in online (it is long though). Google to find it.Welcome to the list and please feel free to ask your questions!

, I recently read that a cup of grape juice (such as Welch's and not whole grapes--juice) every day might help prevent dementia. Keep it in mind for yourself--it's a tasty possible means of prevention.

I don't recall except that it was a reputable study (maybe Harvard?). I'm sure a search would find it. In fact, I might have posted a link in a previous e-mail--just search "grape juice" on the home page.

Okay, I pulled it up from the archives; it was Vandebilt--no Harvard but certainly a reputable school headed by researches from reputable schools and the dementia was specifically Alzheimer's:

It's easy to get up in the morning and have a glass of juice. It's also startling how much that simple act can slash your chances of Alzheimer's. Compelling research from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville shows that the risk of Alzheimer's plummeted 76 percent in people who drank fruit or vegetable juice more than three times a week, compared to those who drank juice less than once a week. Fascinating research by ph, PhD, at Tufts University and Krikorian, PhD, at the University of Cincinnati showed that drinking Concord grape juice or commercial blueberry juice improved short-term and verbal memory in older people with early memory loss and a high risk of Alzheimer's. Make it a habit to drink a glass of juice every day. It may be smart to drink more of the deep-colored, brain-proven juices, such as grape, pomegranate, and blueberry juice, but don't forget orange and grapefruit, pineapple, mango, cherry, prune, and all the rest. They, too, are apt to have brain benefits. Be sure to drink only 100 percent fruit or vegetable juices, not "fruit drinks." Look for "no sugar added" on the label.

Thank you -

I do get a lot of encouragement just hearing others' stories. At this point, I can picture myself going almost completely vegan. I think the two difficulties are the cost, and the amount of time needed. It's a lot easier to grab food and go. I am needing to turn the corner so as to have the energy to take the time needed to fix fresh foods, and maybe to make some money to support the lifestyle. For not only me, but for my whole family.

Deb, I was forced to go vegan since dairy was a huge allergen for me my entire life. I discovered that RAW milk worked perfectly for me, and it is now a staple in my diet. I even went so far as to buy my own cows, even though I don't know one end of a critter from the other. WHAT a lifesaver though! It does take time, energy, and money to go vegan, but it more than balances itself out in what you save in doctors visits, medications, etc. A Vitamix is essential to MY diet, but it makes it soooooo much easier to keep nutritionally balanced. Happy to help in any way I can.

I'm so glad you mentioned raw milk! I just started drinking it. We have to drive about 35 min. every 10 days. We buy 4 large jars that equal 1 gal. plus 1 pint each. I don't drink a lot of milk myself, just have it in cereal. Do you drink it plain, or put it in smoothies? How do you use your milk? We go through a lot of milk, because there are five of us.

Hey, we homeschool, too. I'm 55 and my only child is 15, if you don't count

how childlike her daddy can be.

Welcome aboard,

Texas

Intro and a few questions

? Hi all -

I'm doing my usual January thing, getting healthy after totally doing

myself in during November and December. Except this time - and believe it or

not, I don't say this every year - this time, it can't just be my January

thing. I am so tired of being tired, and so tired of having goals and plans

that I can't follow through on because of feeling fatigued all the time ...

I just have to make this a lifestyle.

I watched several movies recently, including The Gerson Miracle, The Future

of Food, and Food Matters. Those movies have really changed my mindset, and

given me some hope. My husband is very much on board with me, having watched

two of those movies (me and my boys watched Food Matters as part of our

homeschool schedule).

I am, however, tired of trying things, and never getting to the part where I

find the storehouse of energy. I am hoping somebody can tell me that I will

get there! So two things I hope to get from the Vitamix, should I decide to

purchase one, is energy and weight loss. I want my health. I also want my

boys to eat more vegetables.

I'm 53 years old, mom to five children ages 34 down to 12 - grandma to four

grandchildren, and wife to a wonderful man.

I'm looking forward to all I am going to learn here.

Another homeschooler--waving--

I also am hypothyroid and have adrenal fatigue.  If you can't afford the Stop The Madness book go to the website by the same name--lot of great info there also.  I think you would be very pleased with a Vitamix.  My diet is by no means clean but the Vitamix has helped tons!!

Hey, we homeschool, too. I'm 55 and my only child is 15, if you don't count how childlike her daddy can be.Welcome aboard,BeverlyTexas Intro and a few questions? Hi all -I'm doing my usual January thing, getting healthy after totally doing myself in during November and December. Except this time - and believe it or

not, I don't say this every year - this time, it can't just be my January thing. I am so tired of being tired, and so tired of having goals and plans that I can't follow through on because of feeling fatigued all the time ...

I just have to make this a lifestyle.I watched several movies recently, including The Gerson Miracle, The Future of Food, and Food Matters. Those movies have really changed my mindset, and given me some hope. My husband is very much on board with me, having watched

two of those movies (me and my boys watched Food Matters as part of our homeschool schedule).I am, however, tired of trying things, and never getting to the part where I find the storehouse of energy. I am hoping somebody can tell me that I will

get there! So two things I hope to get from the Vitamix, should I decide to purchase one, is energy and weight loss. I want my health. I also want my boys to eat more vegetables.I'm 53 years old, mom to five children ages 34 down to 12 - grandma to four

grandchildren, and wife to a wonderful man.I'm looking forward to all I am going to learn here.DebVisit my website (The Generic Homeschooler)thegenerichomeschooler dot comVisit me at homeschoolblogger! (Homeschooling from the Heart)
