Guest guest
This kind of thing has been going on long before Obama was in office. If anything Obama is pro consumer and not backing the US drug companies that control the FDA. Don't forget the drug companies spend billions in political contributions to influence our laws so they can keep the competition out. That's all this is about. How to get more of your money. Nobody really cares about protecting the consumer. If they really did would there ever have been Viox (sp) or any of the other known dangerous drugs while the FDA looks the other way? Guest guest
It seems like the FDA and DEA " crack down " on foreign pharmaceuticals every couple of months, but it never seems to be a sustained effort. However, with respect to testosterone and other anabolic/androgenic steroids, there was " emergency " legislation passed in 2005 which further increased penalties for possession of even meager quantities without a licensed doctor's prescription. Unless one has a controlled substance or a banned investigational drug, I think it's unlikely that one will face prison time. At worst, feds might seize your generic Tadalafil (Cialis) at Customs and not forward it to you. Without going too deep into politics, it is my understanding that the Obama administration increased the FDA's budget- with the presumed goal " to better protect American health and safety " . Regardless of political affiliations, one needs to face the fact that the FDA now requires a tractor-trailer full of studies, as well as other safety and efficacy info on New Drug Applications (NDAs), whereas in the 1980s key information pertaining to a drug could fit in two 3-ring binders. It is true that today's drugs are more sophistocated; yet, neither more sophistocated drugs, nor more documentation (including the fraudulent studies the FDA knowingly tolerates) makes the drugs safer or more effective in many cases. If anything, this awkward, pseudo-regulation simply makes new (and old) drugs cost more. One must question the value of sending more money to an incompetent organization. And as Brett mentioned, the Vioxx debacle should be sufficient to show that often FDA senior advisors trump the safety warnings by FDA scientists. By analogy, the American oil industry is now considering (meager) measures to address the conflict of interest between oil companies and their regulators (the Minerals Management Services [MMS] and others). Since the FDA and pharmaceutical companies share an incestous relationship like the American oil industry and its regulatory bodies, the precedent of such reform might aid in getting FDA reform so you and I can pay less for our medications in the (hopefully not too distant) future. It would be great if we could show there would be no need to buy foreign pharmaceuticals if our government would address domestic conflicts of interest and have appropriately/competitively-priced products in the first place. ~Xian We as consumers & patients need to convey the problems with giving more money to a failing system. > > This kind of thing has been going on long before Obama was in office.
