Guest guest
becky, hi I do swimming and hot tub at least 3 times a week if possible. It does seem to help me. Like you said weight can be a problem when we are not active. I have trouble walking for long or even standing a while. I had been in therapy but gave up on it helping too much and decided to do my own excerises. You might want to check with your doctor. by lin bmorrette <bmorrette@...> wrote:Has anyone tried this? Does anyone know if it will help or hurt. I used to play a lot of soccer and tennis on top of going rock climbing. And since my knee problems I haven't been able to do much of any of those things. It's slowly driving me crazy (not to mention all the weight I've put on)! The local pool has water aerobics class and it seems like it could be a good thing. I just wanted a second opinion. Guest guest
Hi I have tried aquatherapy via PT.. I love it.. I just wish my schedule allowed me to participate more..(I live in an area with long commutes.). its a litghter activity than the aerobics.. you may want to start slow. I did it after hurting my back..I think it helped me moving again with CP too. I had a great PT.. she was awesome.. really listened to me snd was helpful I'm also looking into the YMCA they have arthritis water classes. try your local YMCA and check out the arthrtis foundation website for more info.. they actually recommend the classes at the Y.. only thing is the times... I wouls also invest in a wet suit, if the water won't be warm since it drives down your body temp. I can't post some exercises/stretches I got since I don't have a scanner.. if anyone would like me to fax it please email a fax number to me directly..if you prefer hope this helps.. Guest guest
I do water physio every week (want to do it more but the therapy pool only allots you one swim a week! :-/) and it helps me with balance, core stability, and muscle strenght which benefits my CMP and PFS as well as my other joint issues. The key is to get a special program of exercises made up for you by a kinesiologist, PTist, etc... who is familiar with your knee issues and can come up with theraputic exercises that would be helpful and not hurt you. I highly reccomend checking into it anyway! Hope it helps you :-) -Rhea
Guest guest
Hi Becky, Water aerobics is great. Some place they have different types of water classes. We have a class for people with arthiritis, which involves a bunch of gentle stretches, and some not to vigerous motions. However, you can always move it up a notch if your physical condition permits it. They have level 1, and level 2 classes. Some places have the aqua mits, or water weights use on your hands to create more resistance, and work your arms more. Make sure you let your aqua instructer know about your knee issues. Some instructors are more knowledgable than others, so some will be more helpful. I mean by more helpful, when certain exercises are performed they give a warning for people with a posible sensitivity to that motion. Like knee people, hip people, shoulder people. Big thing, when kicking, don't kick from the knee joint, use your muscles in your upper leg. Something about your weight in water. One of the instructers was mentioning you are about 50% your body weight at waiste level, and about 90% less your body weight at shoulder level. Some pools have graduated surfaces, where you can easily go deeper, or more shallow. They recommend you go into water about chest level. Go deeper if your knees are bothering when bouncing. You may not be able to bounce, or I don't recommend bouncing if you are feeling pain in the knees. So, we do things where we jog, if it hurts just march in place. Most of the moves can be done bouncing, or keeping one leg planted, then waiting for the other leg to come down. Just keep moving, and use your arms. If your trying to keep your heartrate up, flap those arms around. Some aqua programs are what they call deep water. Where you put these floaty things around your waiste to help you float, and you don't touch the bottom of the pool. YOu are floating the whole class, so no impact at all. Moving in the water is a lot different than moving on the land. GIve the class a good 3-4 tries before giving up on it. By this I mean the moves, and getting use to moving in the water. If you have pain listen to it, and modify. I will mention, some instructors move a little slow. So, if you don't feel your getting enough, and can safely pick up the pace, bounce more (jumping), longer levers are harder than shorter levers in the water. These all increase your intensity. However since your in water, you won't really notice your sweating, or your heart rate is as high on the land. Have fun in the water. Guest guest
There's a pool in Redmond??????!!!? Hadn't had to seek one out for daughter, since she can use the apt pool if she so desires. I, on the other hand ... Water aerobics sounds good. I did that for a bit when we lived in Astoria and sort of enjoyed it. I say " sort of " cuz I'm not thrilled to be in water above my head. Guest guest
Well, with water aerobics I think its better than just standing around or stretching (I think) It gets the heartrate up and you run across the pool, jumping jacks, that sort of thing. I know this works for me because when I was first diagnosed with this. I would do one hour of water aerobics and then the gym, i would use the machines to tone up. I was on 1500cal. diet at that point too (because thats what the nutrionist put me on) and within 8 days because I was supposed to see her every week I lost 24 lbs in 8 days. I stopped seeing her because she wasnt really teaching me anything I didnt know. Guess, I will start back on that routine because I need to lose AT LEAST 33 lbs before i see my dr again on March 23rd. Ive already lost a month so starting Monday I will be doing water aerobics 2 times a day (8am and 3pm) and doing the gym every other day. Ive gotta lose 33lbs!! I REFUSE to go back to the dr. without losing what he wants me too!! Water aerobics > > >>I am trying to figure out how many calories i burn doing water > aerobics...its not listed. That's ludicrous. You use the water for resistance. Just because it is low impact doesn't mean that it is not aerobic. I would count it like swimming. Guest guest
, Unless he's a complete idiot, I think your doctor would be *delighted* to hear that you plan most of your food, drink your water, walk at lunch time a couple times a week, and perhaps have lost 5-10 pounds. Progress not perfection. In order to lose 4 lbs a week on a regular basis, you would have to run a calorie DEFICIT of 2,000 calories A DAY, EVERY DAY. That means burning 2000 calories more than you take in. You burn a certain number just existing. You up the number by eating regularly to keep your metabolism stoked (yes, the more you eat, the more you burn), walk, drink water, think about what you're doing and who you're doing it for (it should be for YOU, not your doctor). Water aerobics twice a day? I don't think so. If you were able to do that, you wouldn't qualify for this group by having all this weight to lose. I think the water aerobics is great. My 71-year-old mother goes three times a week; her mood is better, her blood sugar and blood pressure numbers are great, and her doctor thinks it's a GREAT plan for her; she is large, but not 100+. But if you go twice a day, what is that - 90 minutes, 2 hours total? If it is comparable to walking (which sounds reasonable to me), would you walk two HOURS a day, every day? Could you? Sweetie, we're not trying to beat you down. Really. We have been there; we are there. A couple of baby steps taken every day (drink your water, get enough sleep, walk for 20 minutes) will get you a lot further, than massive unrealistic expectations that are only setting you up for a painful, emotional fall when they don't pan out. Guest guest
Eileen, You are right, my dr. would love any kind of loss! Heck, last time I saw him, I weighed the same and he was pleased I didnt gain any! LOL As far as twice a day water aerobics, I have done it before, and I loved it! I do like exercising once I find something I truly enjoy and well..water aerobics is about it! See, in my life, besides water aerobics I dont get much more exercise. My husband is a neat freak...he washed dishes, does laundry, vacuums, he does it all..and I sit around like a princess (as my mom calls it) So, mainly I am just sitting around most of the day. Going to aerobics twice a day gets me out and gets me moving! I feel so much better when I go. Right now I am saying I will go twice a day...i dont know how long that will last..but I do know for a fact I will go at least ONCE a day..EVERY day! I am not wanting to lose weight because of the way I look. I think im pretty and a wonderful attitude about myself and lord knows, my husband loves me the way I am. I am just wanting to get my insulin levels under control..that is my main goal! My next goal is to have a child, and my dr. said that I have a lesser chance of miscarrying if i have tight control of my insulin. She suggested losing 10% of my body weight and feels that would be a great start. See, I have misscarried twice and they feel its due to high insulin levels, because that was my first sign of pregnancy with both of them! I couldnt get my levels below 200 ever! So, I see her again July 25th and since she suggested 10% that is around 35-40lbs so, as long as I lose 1-2 lbs a week..Im fine! So, I guess we will see what March holds, but for now I will just take it one day and at time, one minute at a time and hope for the best RE: Water aerobics , Unless he's a complete idiot, I think your doctor would be *delighted* to hear that you plan most of your food, drink your water, walk at lunch time a couple times a week, and perhaps have lost 5-10 pounds. Guest guest
Some other things we do are with dumbells crossing & raising/lowering arms while doing the leg stuff, i.e. jumping jacks or rocking horse, etc. We do wall work, where you hold the wall and do leg work there. We also use 'noodles' or paddles for buoyancy and do crunches and twists in deep water. And of course stretching, particularly upper back & shoulder stretches. From: BetsyWestie@... Guest guest
I love working out in the water. Our neighborhood pool has half of their huge pool that is 3 feet deep (they built that half as a water volley ball court). For me, it becomes my " track " I walk laps, use small resistance devices to work upper body - it is wonderful! Of course, in the winter our pool is closed... But - I enjoy it for half the year! __________________________________ - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005 http://mail.
Guest guest
Shari, I do the aqua-fit classes at the " Y " and I really enjoy them. I've been taking classes off-on for 10 years now. Most pools don't " fit " me either, but I have found something that helps. A floatation belt called the Aqua-Jogger. I stay about chest-high in the water, any depth, while I work out with everyone else. I have also worked out in the 3.5' end of the pool (I am 4'1 " ) without it and that works too, but you get more water up the nose from the waves from yourself and everyone else. The A.J. keeps you head higher out of the water http://aquajogger.com/default.htm If you have any questions, please e-mail me. Guest guest
While exercise is not a requirement in this program, if you have been doing it and are accustomed to it, you can continue it during the treatment phase if you wish. If you start up an exercise program, your muscles can hold a little extra water so it's not necessarily good to start a new exercise program while staring treatment. Guest guest
Probably not totally related, but I find when I am not getting enough exercise, I am much more tired all the time. Exercise really energizes me! Right now, my exercise is just a part of life (we just came back from a nearly month long trip). So I’ve been playing non stop with the boys all the day at the water park, regular park, back yard, swimming pool, etc. I know that may not be as ideal as formal exercise, but I sure hope I can keep up the pace even when I start my hcg (it should arrive in less than a week now!) Chantelle Ps-my current schedule seems to keep me pretty energized, although not quite the boost I get from an aerobics/strength training session.
