Hi Amy,

I took two sleeping pills and finally fell asleep around 5:30, then slept

practically all day. I'm trying to get out of this cycle, its sooooooooo

depressing. Luckily my husband got my son off to school this morning, but

hubby is out of town for the next 7 days, so I have to find a way to stay

awake until 6:30. What do you do? Do you end up sleeping all day too?

Sometimes I wake up and think, well what's the sense in getting up, I really

can't do anything. I'm hoping the antidepressants kick in, but I have a

feeling they are what is causing this insomnia to be worse then usual.

Anyway, I'm sending another picture, hope you have room for them. Take care.

Vicki

I sent you the waterfalls already, right?

Vicki,

I cannot open the ppt form of pics...

Yes I feel like sleeping all day when I can`t sleep!!LOL!!

I do the same thing, lie awake and think,or I wake up and start

thinking..

I have several different videos that are pretty reliable to put me to

sleep, bad thing is I wake up when they are over....

I don`t think you are supposed to mix with anti depressants, but I take

St s Wort and Kava..

Haven`t been taking them lately, but they both really good...

St s Wort for depression, and Kava for reslessness and anxiety....

I highly reccomend them both, have you ever used either?

You need to use the right brands and strengths though...

Yes I've tried the St. 's wart and was about to get Kava, but I'm going

broke and my doctor said " why not let me prescribe you something that does

the same thing, and will cost you less due to medical insurance " , so I went

for the sleeping aid - Ambien, and an anti-depressant, can't remember the

name, but its a new one that is really supposed to help both serotonin and

the other (brain cramp here) main , I think it dopamine. Which is unusual

for an antidepressant, most only deal with one. I've only been on them for

10 days, so I don't know if they are working yet or not. Anyway sorry I

sent the wrong picture format, I'll try again. I took an Ambien one hour ago

and drank a cup of Sweet Dreams tea, which really mellows me out,but I'm not

tired yet, just bad brain fog and dizziness, which I guess forces you to

bed - but sleep? I doubt. Anyway Here's to us sleeping!!!

Vicki,

Send that pic to chorse001@... please..

That is my other address and my mailbox on this thing is tine..

I have so much saved in here already...

I joined the collidial silver list also and now I have to check my mail

every couple hrs or it fills up..

I really reccomend the Kava..

I have had really severe anxiety attacks in the past and it has even

helped with those..

I don`t like what the sleeping pills do and how they make you feel the

next day.

Never had any of that with Kava...

About to get one of my boring movies out now!<L>

I feel tired until I lay down....

Maybe I should get some housework done??

Yeah right...

Mona,

Thanks Mona, yeah my doctor told me Kava would help me sleep. I think I'm

only depressed because I so tired of being sick and feel like I'm not trying

hard enough, you know the guilt thing, then I get stressed out because of

not working, but I don't think I have anxiety attacks, so I guess I don't

need Kava, I was looking for something to help me sleep, the Ambien doesn't

work very well unless I'm already exhausted. Thanks for the input.

Ried,

I remember my first remission this past June - I too thought wow I'm cured!

That was only after six months of anbx, (went at least five years

misdiagnosed). Then when I got hit with it just two months later (my doctor

took me off of anbx's) I got so angry and depressed. That's when my doctor

put me on Zoloft, but when I read that it affects Libido, I said forget it!

Then finally just gave in, but he is giving me Effexor. Today was only day

14 so I don't know if its working yet. But I refuse to have to be on it

forever, I'm just trying to show my doctor that I'm trying every thing I can

to get better and take his advice. Is your wife still mad at you? Hope you

have a few good days in a row coming up for you, sounds like you are due.

Take care

Hi Guys,

I am on Paxil, and can only speak on my experience with that, but I

believe it is in the same family of drugs. I am presently on 30mg, started

with 20mg. When I first started, I did notice the lack of libido, but it

did cease, or rather my libido came back, even after the increase in dosage.

Maybe you just have to take it for awhile, or as they say sex begins in the

mind, and if you are determined to enjoy yourself, you will. Just my 2

cents.

Just my .02 worth....

It is possible to suffer from depression and anxiety at the same time. It

happened to me during an incredibly stressful period.

The opposite of depression (at least in bipolar disorder) is mania.

Hi lymies, got a question. I have a lump on my neck beside my spine, its

sore and the soreness goes up into my scalp. I went to my PCP and he said

that it was a pulled muscle, and muscle spasms. I am not sure this sounds

right.. it is a hard, pea sized lump. What do u think??

Barb,

This is a problem many of us face, at least you have a scientific-medical

background, so you can come off a bit more convincing than most of us. I

have noticed that just like good eyesight days, I have good brain days. Now

if I could just use one of those days to accumulate some data, and

understand it. Problem is when those days come along, I am usually having a

bad energy day. You just can't win.

If you are going to get your " probiotics " through yogurt, you have to eat the

they die off rather quickly after opening and you can tell if they are still

living by how strong the smell of the yogurt is. (You may have noticed that

if you leave yogurt in the refrigerator for a long time it loses the smell).

Some people respond well to yogurt even if they have a problem with dairy,

because it is already somewhat predigested, unlike other milk products.

Bernard Jensen himself is a big proponent of yogurt. Other people do not

fare so well. (Bob on this list recently recounted his allergy to yogurt).

Guy, where did you hear that you should stick to acidophilus alone rather

than several strains of " friendly " bacteria? According to Randolph Meltzer,

D.C. in New York, you should look for a product that has several strains.

That way you will be sure to get the one(s) your own body responds well to.

These products will probably be more expensive than the others but worth it.

Meltzer incorporated such products into my regime when I was his patient and

we successfully treated candida and CFIDS.

Meltzer's probiotics were in capsule form. Other brands which have been

highly recommended to me in health food stores were liquid. I can't remember

the names now (sorry), and I really don't know which of the many brands are

the " best " , but I don't think it matters so much whether they are capsule or

liquid as long as they are kept refrigerated.

Aside from yogurt, two other foods which have probiotics are carrots and

cabbage. However, I don't really undertand the mechanism by which you get

them from carrots since I would think they would get lost in the washing

and/or peeling?

This text is taken from an audio cassette prepared by Dr. Strand. His views come

time or the interest to become involved in preventive medicine or nutrition.

Though I have always been involved with preventive medicine, I have never been

if they should take any nutritional supplements. My standard reply would be to

tell them that if they would choose and eat the proper food, nutritional

supplements would not be necessary.

A few years ago, articles began appearing in our medical journals on the subject

of " free radicals " and their relationship to degenerative diseases. At first, I

didn't get too excited about these studies because I didn't feel they were

applicable to the every day practice of medicine. However, in the past year

there have been some major authorities in preventive medicine who have been

speaking out on this subject. One of the most notable is Dr. who

started the aerobic exercise movement some twenty years ago. He has recently

released his book, " The Antioxidant Revolution. " In this book, Dr.

carefully lays out the medical evidence that leads him to conclude that everyone

should be on an antioxidant supplement. This is a bold statement coming from a

physician who is so well respected in the medical community. I have to admit

that this was the catalyst that started my new found interest and research into

nutritionals.

What are " free radicals " and how do they relate to degenerative diseases? This

question must be answered first if we are going to be able to understand the

need for nutritional supplements.

Free radicals are released during normal metabolism in your body, as your body's

cells turn your food into energy. There are several different kinds of free

radicals, but by definition they are molecules that have an unpaired electron in

their outer orbit. This is essentially a charged molecular bandit that is

seeking out another molecule with which it can combine. These unstable molecules

are actually bouncing around crashing into other particles and tissue. Chemical

studies have shown that the impac t of these particles has produced bursts of

light. Free radicals are good in the fact that they help regulate the tone of

your smooth muscles, fight inflammation, and kill bacteria. However, the key to

the safe operation of free radicals in the body is balance. Many things greatly

increase the number of free radicals in our body and throw off this delicate

balance. These are pollutants in our air, water and food. Additionally,

ultraviolet light from the sun, cigarette smoke, radiation, excessive exercise

and stress cause an increase in the number of free radicals in our body. These

excessive free radicals have been found to cause significant damage to the cell

and even the DNA structure of the cell.

The body produces its own antioxidants that can neutralize these free radicals

and render them harmless. However, into today's environment the body is not able

to produce all of the antioxidants that we need and we have to rely on our diet

to furnish the rest. These external antioxidants are primarily Vitamin C,

Vitamin E, and Beta Carotene. When the body is not able to handle these free

radicals, they are free to run wild and cause devastating damage to healthy and

unhealthy parts of the body. This ultimately leads to many degenerative diseases

and premature death. Solid medical research indicates that these outlaw

molecules are involved in the process of cancer initiation, atherosclerosis

(hardening of the arteries), cataracts, premature aging, Parkinson's disease and

the list goes on and on.

Dr. Lester Packer, a biochemist at the University of California at Berkeley,

began to demonstrate in his research that free radicals are a major threat to

our health. Dr. Packer pointed to the very volatile hydroxyl free radical as one

of the main culprits in the initiation and promotion of cancer. The primary way

in which these free radicals cause cancer is by launching an attack on the

nucleus of the cells and damaging the DNA, which may lead to the mutation of the

cell and cancerous growths.

You and your wife are facing a really complex and emotional decision. Here's a

first step that I would highly recommend. BOth of your questions have been

addressed at length on the National Graves Disease Bulletin Board. The address

is http://209.114.200.77/bb/new.asp

The NGDF BB has an excellent search engine. Just click on " search " and type in

" pregnancy and Graves " and later, " PTU and cancer. "

Let me explain why I think this is the best way to answer your question. Dozens

of women have debated the questions you're asking on this BB. They posted their

thoughts, doctor's opinions, results of their research, etc. One or two posts

alone won't give you a full picture, but if you take the time to read through

all the posts on pregnancy and Graves -- and next, PTU and cancer -- you'll have

a comprehensive picture of the risks associated with pregnancy and Graves; the

positive and negative aspects of different treatments on pregnancy; the role of

PTU and its toxicity in a pregnancy (not much discussion on this there, but

enough); and finally, the personal stories of women struggling with these

decisions and through pregnancies.

There is no easy answer, there are without question distinct risks during a

pregnancy for a woman with Graves -- especially if the illness isn't solidly in

remission and it sounds like your wife's isn't.

Again, searching and reading the BB will take some time, but it will be well

worth it.
